Agentic AI security is the protection of AI systems that can plan and take actions through software tools and integrations. It covers more than a model’s answers: it also covers the data and instructions the system encounters, the tools and identities it can use, and the effects of its actions. Security therefore has to control and monitor the agent’s behavior at runtime, as well as secure its models, data, software and infrastructure.
What makes AI security “agentic”?
There is no universally adopted formal definition of agentic AI security. Operationally, the term applies to protecting AI systems that can plan and take autonomous actions affecting external systems or environments. NIST uses this action-oriented distinction in its description of AI agents.

A chatbot that only produces text can still create risk, but an agent connected to email, databases, browsers, code tools or business applications may turn a generated instruction into a real operation. The security boundary therefore includes the model and the surrounding systems through which it reads information and acts.
Why does it require a different approach?
Traditional cybersecurity remains the foundation, but agent security must account for how model behavior connects to software functionality and real permissions. NIST’s May 18, 2026 summary of responses to its AI-agent security RFI reports broad agreement that existing cybersecurity practices remain relevant but need adaptation.

| Security question | Model-focused view | Agent-focused view |
|---|---|---|
| What can go wrong? | A model may produce an unsafe or inaccurate response. | A model response may lead to a tool call, data access or other consequential action. |
| What needs protection? | The model, its inputs and outputs, and the systems that host it. | Those elements plus the agent’s tools, data sources, identity, permissions, integrations and action paths. |
| What should testing cover? | Whether responses handle prompts safely. | Whether the agent resists hostile content, stays within its permissions, handles tool failures safely and blocks or escalates unsafe actions. |
The agent-focused view does not replace model or infrastructure security. It adds the question that matters once a system can act: what is it able to do, under whose authority, and how will the organization know what happened?
What threats are specific or especially important for agents?
Indirect prompt injection and adversarial content
An agent may read webpages, documents, messages or other external content that contains instructions crafted to influence its behavior. NIST identifies interaction with adversarial data, including indirect prompt injection, as a security concern. Content retrieved as data can become a route to influencing actions if the system does not reliably distinguish it from trusted instructions.

Compromised models and poisoned data
An insecure or compromised model, or poisoned training data, can undermine behavior before the agent reaches a tool or takes an action. NIST includes model insecurity and training-data poisoning among the risks relevant to AI agents.
Tool misuse, hijacking and privilege abuse
Tools make agents useful, but they also create paths to misuse. OWASP’s 2025 Top 10 release announcement highlights tool misuse, behavior hijacking, and identity or privilege abuse. It frames agentic security as broader than a single model interaction because systems can plan, persist and delegate across tools and systems; that is OWASP’s framing, not a universally adopted definition.

Unsafe actions without an attacker
Not every harmful action requires an adversary. NIST also points to specification gaming and misaligned objectives: an agent can pursue a poorly specified goal in a way that harms security, even without malicious input.
Cascading effects across systems
When agents delegate tasks or interact with other agents and services, one bad decision may propagate. The risk is not just the initial mistake, but the downstream actions enabled by the connected workflow. OWASP’s 2025 announcement calls out planning, persistence and delegation across multiple systems as features that broaden this exposure.

How should an organization secure agent systems?
- Inventory agents and connections. Identify agent deployments across teams and environments. For each, record its model, tools, data sources, identity, owner and destinations. OWASP’s release materials emphasize discovering agent usage and evaluating risk across the enterprise.
- Define the approved purpose and limit access. Give each agent only the identity, information and tool permissions needed for its task. NIST identifies interventions that constrain and monitor the extent of agent access; this makes least privilege an operational requirement, not just a configuration ideal.
- Enforce controls at runtime and preserve visibility. Log tool calls and consequential actions, and retain enough traceability to determine what the agent could access and what it did. OWASP’s Agent Control Standard (ACS), dated September 1, 2026, describes middleware hooks and portable policies enforced at runtime, with agent behavior made inspectable, traceable and instrumentable.
- Test the action path, not only the prompt. Evaluate indirect prompt injection, privilege boundaries, tool misuse and failure behavior. Check whether unsafe actions are blocked or routed for human review. NIST’s RFI asks about measuring security and anticipating risks during development; it does not prescribe one universal test suite.
- Map controls to established frameworks and document gaps. OWASP’s GenAI framework crosswalk can help connect risks to controls in existing frameworks. Its September 1, 2026 resource page describes 51 vulnerabilities across four source lists mapped to 25 frameworks. Those figures describe the crosswalk’s scope, not the prevalence of vulnerabilities or the effectiveness of controls.
- Revisit the program when systems change. Review inventories, permissions, tests and monitoring after material changes to models, agent frameworks, integrations or policies. OWASP’s State of Agentic AI Security and Governance, version 2.01 dated June 1, 2026, covers frameworks and governance models for building, managing and deploying agentic applications.
What should teams look for when evaluating agent-security controls?
For a tool or platform evaluation, compare capabilities against the risks in the organization’s own agent workflows. Useful criteria include:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Whether runtime policies can block actions or require approval.
- How identities and delegated tools are controlled, including privilege boundaries.
- Whether the system shows tool calls, data access and consequential actions.
- Whether logs provide traceability and evidence useful in incident review.
- How well coverage maps across the organization’s frameworks, agent stacks and environments.
- Whether testing features help evaluate adversarial inputs and unsafe action paths.
OWASP’s ACS provides concepts for assessing transparency, traceability, instrumentability and portable runtime controls; its crosswalk helps map risks to framework controls. The available sources do not establish a vendor ranking or provide independent comparative product testing. A standard or framework can guide evaluation, but it does not by itself guarantee that an agent deployment is secure.

What is the practical takeaway?
Secure an agent as both an AI system and a software actor. Keep conventional cybersecurity controls in place, then add explicit limits on what the agent can access and do, runtime monitoring of its actions, and testing of the complete path from incoming information to consequential operation. The right controls depend on the agent’s purpose, integrations and authority; no single checklist makes every deployment safe.
