Agent Search Optimization (ASO) is the work of making a website discoverable, understandable, and usable by AI agents acting for people. Track it across four separate layers: whether relevant crawlers can reach your site, whether your pages appear accurately in AI answers, whether those answers send visits, and whether visits lead to meaningful actions. There is no settled industry definition or universal ASO score, so make your definition and measurement rules explicit.
What Agent Search Optimization means
ASO is an emerging practitioner term for improving how AI agents find, evaluate, and use website information when helping someone complete a task. That could mean answering a question, comparing services, or navigating to a form. The term is not standardized, and its boundaries overlap with familiar search disciplines:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- SEO focuses on making content accessible to search crawlers and eligible to appear in search results.
- AEO and GEO commonly refer to improving the chance that content is surfaced or cited in answers generated by search or AI systems.
- ASO adds attention to an agent’s ability to evaluate and act on information, not only retrieve or cite it.
These labels are used inconsistently. Define ASO for your team rather than assuming vendors or platforms use the same definition. The practitioner framing in Visualping’s March 28, 2026 article is one example, not an official cross-platform standard.

A useful ASO report separates technical access from answer visibility, visits, and business impact. A crawler request is evidence of a fetch, not proof that an answer engine used or recommended a page. A brand mention is not necessarily accurate, clickable, or commercially useful.
| Layer | Record | What it tells you—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| Access and technical reach | Known crawler and user-triggered agent user agents; requested URLs; status codes; blocked requests; verified source IPs | Shows whether identifiable systems fetched pages. It does not prove that a page was included in an answer. User-agent strings can be spoofed, so verify IPs against the provider’s current published ranges. |
| AI answer visibility | Fixed prompts; engine; date; brand and competitor mentions; cited URL; answer context and factual accuracy | Shows what a defined prompt sample returned at a particular time. Results may vary with prompt, engine, location, and time; there is no established universal ASO score. |
| Referral traffic | Referral source where available; landing page; sessions; engaged sessions | Shows visits that analytics can attribute to a source. It misses answer exposures that do not generate a click. |
| Business outcomes | Leads, signups, purchases, bookings, or other defined conversions; assisted conversions where supported | Connects traffic to outcomes. A simple before-and-after change does not establish that ASO work caused the difference. |
Practitioner measurement guidance recommends following AI referrals through to conversions, but does not establish one universal attribution method. Choose a baseline and document other changes that could affect results.
Build a repeatable prompt and engine test
Manual tracking is viable if you keep the test consistent. The GitHub project AI Agent Search Optimization Skill describes a workflow based on crawler audits, prompt suites, and implementation tasks; it also names visibility dashboards as another approach. Treat those as source-described approaches, not as an independent product comparison.
Rank #2
- Choose representative questions. Use real questions your intended audience might ask, including comparison, suitability, and task-oriented prompts. Keep the wording stable between measurement rounds.
- Name the engines and test conditions. Record the engine, language, target geography, date, and any account or personalization conditions you can control. Do not combine results from different engines into an unlabeled total.
- Apply fixed inclusion rules. Decide what counts as a brand appearance, competitor mention, citation, or useful answer before reviewing results. Record the cited page and whether the answer represents the page accurately.
- Repeat on a set cadence. Report the number of prompts tested and the cadence. Keep a log of major site, prompt, and platform changes that could explain a change in results.
- Connect observations to analytics. Compare cited or mentioned pages with referral landing pages and qualified conversions. Keep exposure, clicks, and outcomes as distinct measures.
A simple tracking row can contain: date, engine, language and geography, prompt ID and exact wording, brand present, competitor names, cited URL, answer accuracy, referral sessions, and attributed conversion. Add a notes field for platform or site changes. A spreadsheet is sufficient for a small stable test set; a dashboard may help when you need broader prompt coverage, historical reporting, or exports. Evaluate any dashboard on supported engines, repeatability, citation-level detail, data retention, export access, and cost. The available evidence does not establish a winning product or common benchmark.

Google says appearances in AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console’s overall search traffic within the Web search type, and directs site owners to Search Console performance reporting for generative AI features. That is Google Search visibility, not a universal measure of agent activity across other answer engines or user-triggered agent sessions. Reporting labels and feature behavior can change, so check the current Search Console interface when using it.

Google’s guidance emphasizes ordinary Search eligibility and people-first site quality. It states: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.” This guidance applies to Google Search AI features; it does not mean technical accessibility is irrelevant to other systems. Distinguish search crawlers from user-triggered fetches
Log bot activity carefully: platforms identify different agents for search discovery, possible training crawls, and fetches triggered by a user. Those purposes are not interchangeable, and a user-agent label alone is not reliable verification.
Rank #4
- OpenAI: OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in ChatGPT search; GPTBot is associated with potential model-training crawls; and ChatGPT-User may fetch a page after a user asks a question. OpenAI says robots.txt controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are independent, and ChatGPT-User does not determine search appearance.
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot is documented as a search-results crawler, while Perplexity-User handles user-requested fetches.
Use each provider’s current crawler documentation and published IP ranges when checking logs or configuring a firewall. Names, IP ranges, and behavior can change; do not hard-code a static list into a long-lived monitoring rule without maintenance.
Common tracking mistakes and how to avoid them
- Treating a fetch as a recommendation: A verified request means a system accessed a URL. Measure answer inclusion separately.
- Changing the test between reporting periods: Keep prompts, engines, geography, language, cadence, and inclusion rules stable. If a change is necessary, record it and avoid presenting the periods as directly comparable.
- Counting mentions without checking context: Record the cited URL and assess factual accuracy. A mention that misstates an offer or cites an irrelevant page is not a positive result.
- Calling referrals total visibility: Many answer impressions do not produce clicks. Report referrals as a traffic measure, not a complete view of answer exposure.
- Claiming causality from a before-and-after chart: Record site changes and platform changes, define a baseline, and avoid attributing a conversion shift to ASO alone.
- Trusting a user-agent string or a vendor score on its own: Verify provider IP ranges and retain the underlying observations. No cross-engine score is established as a universal standard.
Do special files or schema guarantee agent visibility?
No guaranteed ranking or visibility lever is established here for llms.txt, additional schema, or any single vendor score. In particular, Google says llms.txt is not a required Google optimization for its AI Search features. That statement is specific to Google; it should not be generalized into a claim about every agent’s technical requirements. Focus on making useful pages accessible and accurate, then measure what named systems actually fetch and return.

If you need screenshots of pages while auditing how they appear, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of a target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Agent Search Optimization an official Google term?
No. ASO is an emerging practitioner term, not a standardized Google discipline. Google documents its own AI Search features and Search Console reporting separately.
Does a crawler visit mean an AI answer cited my site?
No. A fetch is evidence of access only. Check answer visibility using a repeatable prompt set and record citations separately.
