It is a label for a goal, not a universally standardized ranking system or a magic switch. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says its existing SEO best practices apply; it does not require a separate AEO checklist or special optimization.
What does AEO mean?
Answer engine optimization describes work intended to help content be discovered and used by experiences that respond directly to questions, including AI-assisted search. The phrase is often used alongside “generative engine optimization” (GEO), but neither term identifies a single, official set of ranking rules across the web.

For Google Search, the practical advice is specific: its guidance says the best practices for SEO remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional requirements or special optimizations needed. That does not mean every page will appear. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in Google Search to qualify as a supporting link in these features, and eligibility does not guarantee that Google will display it. How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO is the broader work of making pages accessible, understandable, and useful in search. AEO is a useful way to describe the narrower aim of being helpful in direct-answer and AI-assisted discovery. For Google’s AI search features, the distinction is about emphasis, not a separate technical program: Google says its foundational SEO practices still apply.

So, do not abandon SEO to chase an alleged AEO algorithm. Improve the page for the person asking the question and make sure search systems can access and understand it. No optimization can guarantee an AI Overview citation.
How to optimize content for answer engines
1. Start with a real reader question
Choose a question your audience genuinely needs answered, and use familiar language in prominent places such as the page title and main heading. Address the question directly, then give the context, qualifications, and detail needed to make the answer useful. Google’s Search Essentials emphasize helpful, reliable, people-first content and language people use.

2. Make the page accessible to search
- Allow crawling where you want the page considered for search.
- Link to important pages with crawlable links so search systems can discover them.
- Make essential information available as text, including context that might otherwise be conveyed only through media.
- Maintain a usable page experience and check for technical issues that could prevent discovery or indexing.
These are established search fundamentals, not special AI requirements. A page that cannot be indexed or is not eligible for a search snippet cannot qualify as a supporting link in Google AI Overviews or AI Mode. Google’s AI features guidance
3. Use structured data only when it fits
Structured data can help Google understand eligible content for ordinary search features, but it must accurately describe what people can see on the page. Google says no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search. Do not add markup that misrepresents the visible content in the hope of earning an AI citation. 4. Give readers value beyond a generic summary
Include relevant expertise, meaningful detail, and original value rather than repeating a commodity summary. Google’s generative AI optimization resource, announced May 15, 2026, highlights valuable, unique content. Google Search Central’s announcement
5. Review search performance and site outcomes
Use Google Search Console to review search performance and diagnose issues. Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console’s overall search traffic and Performance report under the Web search type; its optimization guide also points to a Generative AI performance report. Where it makes sense, compare search activity with outcomes that matter to your site, such as conversions.
AEO myths: what you do not need for Google
- An llms.txt file or special AI markup: Google says these are not special visibility signals for its Search, and no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI features. Google’s guide
- Tiny content chunks or a prescribed page length: Google does not require content to be split into tiny pieces and does not specify an ideal page length for generative AI search. Choose a length that serves the topic and reader.
- A special “AI writing style”: Rewriting solely for Google’s AI features is unnecessary; Google says its systems can understand synonyms and general meaning.
- Artificially increasing mentions: Google cautions against seeking inauthentic mentions. Focus on quality and usefulness rather than manufacturing attention.
- A tool that promises citations or reveals ranking factors: Google says third-party tools cannot access its internal ranking data or guarantee performance. A proprietary score is a vendor’s estimate, not an official Google ranking measure. Google’s guidance on third-party SEO tools
How to measure AEO without mistaking estimates for facts
For Google Search, treat Search Console as the first-party place to observe search performance. It can help you see search activity and investigate technical issues, but a reported impression or click does not by itself prove why a page appeared in an AI feature. Pair search reporting with your own site goals when relevant.

Before relying on one, ask what platforms and features it covers, whether it reports observable first-party data or an estimate, and whether its recommendations improve reader value and technical accessibility. What this means beyond Google
The guidance above describes Google Search. It should not be treated as a definitive account of how every independent answer engine retrieves, ranks, or cites information. Platform-specific requirements can differ; the broad, durable approach is to publish useful, reliable content and make it technically accessible, then consult the relevant platform’s own guidance where available.
