Advertiser-supported software is software whose costs are funded in whole or in part by advertising. Ads can help make an app free or less expensive, but the funding model alone does not tell you whether the software is safe, wanted, or well designed. The key distinction is whether advertising is disclosed and under the user’s control—or whether the software displays unexpected promotions, obscures what it does, or makes itself difficult to remove.
What does advertiser-supported software mean?
The term describes how software is funded or distributed: advertising revenue helps support the product. An app might show ads within its own interface, for example, or a provider might use advertising to subsidize access. That arrangement is not, by itself, evidence of malware.

The related word adware is used in more than one way. Microsoft’s 2023 consumer explainer uses it as a synonym for advertiser-supported software. In Microsoft’s security criteria, however, “advertising software” is a specific potentially unwanted application (PUA) category based on behavior such as displaying promotions in other software or inserting ads into webpages. The meaning therefore depends on whether someone is describing a business model or applying a security classification.
Is advertiser-supported software the same as adware or malware?
No. These terms can overlap in everyday conversation, but they do not mean the same thing in every context.

- Ordinary ad-supported software: Advertising is part of the product or funding model, and the behavior is disclosed with reasonable user choice.
- Potentially unwanted advertising behavior: Ads appear in unrelated programs or webpages, other software is bundled without clear disclosure, or the program gives users poor control over the behavior or its removal. Microsoft’s PUA criteria address certain advertising behaviors of this kind.
- Malware: Malicious software or code compromises security—for example, by stealing data or downloading other malware. Advertising alone does not establish that such a compromise has occurred.
Microsoft says PUAs are not considered malware in its classification, although they may display unwanted ads, offer unexpected apps, or do other things a user would rather avoid. Other security products may classify behavior differently. A label is not a substitute for checking what the software actually does.
How can you tell whether the advertising is transparent and under your control?
Microsoft and Google publish policy criteria that help explain the practical difference between disclosed advertising and potentially unwanted behavior. These are policy approaches, not a universal legal definition, certification, or guarantee that a program is safe.

| What to check | A useful question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Where ads appear | Are they inside the product, or do they appear in unrelated software or webpages? | Microsoft’s advertising-software PUA category includes ads displayed in other software and ads inserted into webpages. |
| Disclosure | Did the description explain the software’s purpose and advertising behavior clearly? | Microsoft calls for prominent notice and a clear indication of activity. Google identifies misleading descriptions or undisclosed functions as unwanted-software concerns. |
| Choice and control | Can you decline the behavior, stop it, or revoke permission? | Microsoft’s criteria say software should not install without permission or bypass consent controls, and users should be able to start, stop, or revoke authorization. |
| Ad attribution and closing | Can you identify which program displayed an ad and close it? | Microsoft’s adware explanation says externally promoted ads should identify the program and provide an obvious way to close them. |
| Removal and bundling | Is there a standard uninstall method, and are additional programs disclosed? | Microsoft calls for a standard uninstall method; Google flags difficult removal and undisclosed bundling as concerns. |
| Data handling | Are collection and transmission of activity or private information disclosed and consented to? | Microsoft and Google both describe notice, consent, or disclosure expectations for stored or transmitted information. |
A disclosure does not automatically make every practice harmless. The actual behavior may differ from what users were told, or the program may still undermine their control.

Unexpected pop-ups, unfamiliar browser toolbars, or redirects are reasons to investigate, not proof that an app is ad-supported or that a device is infected. - Review recently installed apps, browser extensions, and any programs installed alongside them. Remove items you do not recognize or want using the operating system’s standard uninstall process or the browser’s extension controls.
- Check whether the app’s own description and settings explain where its ads appear, what data it collects, and how to disable the behavior. If the explanation does not match what you see, treat that mismatch as a reason for caution.
- Keep security software updated. The FTC advises against downloading software by clicking an advertisement; instead, navigate directly to the provider’s address. It also warns against unfamiliar download sites and peer-to-peer (P2P) sources.
- On Windows, Microsoft documents reputation-based protection for potentially unwanted apps. Its setup page reviewed for this guidance applies to Windows 10 and says PUA blocking was turned off by default for enterprise and consumer customers on that page; users could configure app and download blocking. Defaults and menus can vary by Windows version and configuration, so check the settings for your current installation. Microsoft also says Windows 11 includes Smart App Control, which can help protect against PUA.
For app claims and privacy representations, the FTC’s app-marketing guidance is relevant to whether descriptions are truthful and privacy practices are represented accurately; it does not determine whether a particular app is adware.

Advertising can be a legitimate way to support software, including software offered free of charge. The more useful questions are where ads appear, whether the behavior was explained, whether you can control it, how easily you can remove the program, and what it does with your data. Those answers provide more context than the word “adware” alone.
