What Is Advanced Audio Coding (AAC)? A Clear Definition

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is a multichannel perceptual audio-coding standard. Learn what the name means and what it does—and does not—tell you about sound quality.

Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) is a multichannel audio-coding standard that compresses sound using perceptual coding: it aims to reduce audio data while preserving quality as people hear it. AAC is not a bitrate, a playback device, or a promise of identical sound quality in every file. The outcome depends on the encoding and listening conditions.

What does AAC stand for?

AAC stands for Advanced Audio Coding. It is a coding standard—technology for representing audio in a compressed form—not a single quality setting or a product you need to buy.

What is the AAC standard?

The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO/IEC 13818-7:2006 specifies MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding as a multichannel audio-coding standard. ISO lists the edition as published in January 2006 and says it was reviewed and confirmed in 2017, so that edition remains current in its catalog. The catalog also notes one amendment.

ISO’s abstract says the standard “delivers higher quality than is achievable when requiring MPEG-1 backwards compatibility.” This describes the standard’s relationship to that compatibility requirement; it does not guarantee a particular result for every AAC encode.

How does AAC relate to MPEG-4 Audio?

AAC is part of a wider standards landscape. MPEG describes MPEG-4 Audio as a framework of coding tools for varied needs, including speech and music, natural and synthetic audio, low-bitrate and high-quality delivery, and complex soundtracks. That range is why “AAC” alone does not specify one fixed bitrate, channel setup, or quality level. MPEG-4 Audio overview

Does AAC sound as good as a CD?

There is no universal answer from the codec name alone. In a 2005 overview, MPEG characterized AAC as a multichannel perceptual audio coder and described transparent quality relative to a stereo CD original for audio material coded at 128 kb/s. That is MPEG’s qualified characterization for the stated material and comparison—not a general minimum bitrate or a guarantee for every source, encoder, or listener. MPEG document N7704 by S. The standard defines coding technology, not a universal listening test or bitrate recommendation. A useful judgment depends on the particular audio, encoding settings, playback chain, and listener.

What does “AAC audio” tell you?

It tells you that the audio uses AAC coding. By itself, it does not establish the bitrate, the number of channels, the specific encoding settings, or whether a particular device or application can play it. Those details require information about the actual file and the playback system; the codec definition alone does not provide a device-compatibility list.

Do you need to buy anything to use AAC?

No particular physical product follows from the definition. AAC is a standard, not a device. Whether you need software or hardware depends on what you want to encode or play and whether your existing tools support the relevant audio format.
