The 802.11 term for this arrangement is IBSS, short for Independent Basic Service Set. This article uses “ad hoc mode” in that wireless-networking sense.
What is ad hoc mode?
An ad hoc Wi-Fi network is a peer-to-peer arrangement: participating wireless stations communicate with one another without first sending traffic through a master access point. Linux Wireless documentation describes Ad-Hoc mode as a way to create a wireless network “without the need of having a Master Access Point in the network.” Linux Wireless documentation identifies the mode as Ad-Hoc (IBSS).

Because there is no central access point managing the network, coordination is distributed among the participating stations. Linux Wireless describes this arrangement as useful when a suitable access point is unavailable.

How does ad hoc mode differ from infrastructure mode?
| Feature | Ad hoc (IBSS) | Infrastructure |
|---|---|---|
| Central access point | Not required | Used |
| How stations communicate | Directly with one another | Through the access point |
| Network coordination | Distributed among stations | Centralized through the access point |
Infrastructure mode is the familiar arrangement in which wireless devices connect through an access point. That access point manages the local wireless network and may also connect it to other networks. Linux Wireless documentation and Cisco’s explanation of wireless access points describe this access-point-based model.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Is ad hoc mode the same as Wi-Fi Direct?
Not as a general rule. Ad hoc mode here means the 802.11 IBSS arrangement; Wi-Fi Direct is a distinct peer-to-peer technology and the terms should not be treated as interchangeable. Microsoft’s guidance is specifically about Windows: it says ad hoc mode may not be available in future Windows versions and recommends Wi-Fi Direct beginning with Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2. Microsoft’s Windows ad hoc networking guidance gives that platform-specific direction.
Does every device support ad hoc mode?
No universal support claim can be made. Availability depends on the operating system, wireless driver, and hardware. Linux Wireless documents Ad-Hoc (IBSS), while Microsoft’s guidance describes a Windows-specific move toward Wi-Fi Direct; neither establishes support for every computer or adapter. Check the documentation for the particular device and software if you need to create or join an IBSS network.
