Unlike a script limited to one engine or job, a WSF can use multiple scripting engines and contain multiple jobs. To run a particular job, use wscript.exe with the /job: option and the job identifier.
What a WSF file is
WSF stands for Windows Script File. It is a script-file format used with Windows Script Host, the Windows environment for running scripts written for supported scripting engines. Microsoft lists .wsf alongside .vbs and .js as common Windows script extensions. A WSF is a container for script work, not a scripting language of its own.

Microsoft describes the format’s key distinction this way: “Each .wsf file can use multiple scripting engines and perform multiple jobs.” That means a single WSF can organize more than one job and can use more than one scripting engine. The particular engines available on a computer depend on its configuration.

Use the Windows Script Host command-line tool wscript.exe followed by the WSF path. For example, in Command Prompt:

wscript.exe "C:Scriptsexample.wsf"
Replace the example path with the location and name of your file. WSH settings, available scripting engines, and local policy can affect whether a script runs successfully. Microsoft’s command reference says the task does not require administrative credentials and recommends using a non-administrative account as a security best practice.
How to run a named job in a WSF file
To run one job rather than rely on the file’s default behavior, add /job: followed by that job’s identifier:

wscript.exe /job:MyJob "C:Scriptsexample.wsf"
Here, MyJob is an example identifier; use the identifier defined in the WSF file. Microsoft documents /job:<identifier> for running a named job. The reference does not establish the XML syntax for defining jobs, so this is an invocation example, not a complete WSF file template.
Useful WSH command options
| Option | What it does | When it may help |
|---|---|---|
/job:<identifier> |
Runs the named job in a WSF file. | When a WSF contains multiple jobs and you need to select one. |
/e:<engine> |
Selects the scripting engine for a custom file extension. | When running a script with a nonstandard extension. It does not create a permanent extension-to-engine association. |
/b |
Runs in batch mode without alerts, scripting errors, or input prompts. | For an execution context that should not show those interactive elements. It does not make an untrusted script safe. |
/i |
Runs in interactive mode. | When interactive behavior is needed. |
/t:<number> |
Sets a run-time limit in seconds. Microsoft documents a maximum of 32,767 seconds and says the default is no time limit. | When a time limit is appropriate. A timeout is not a safety control for untrusted code. |
/d or /x |
Uses the debugger. | When debugging a script. |
These switches and their behavior are documented in Microsoft’s wscript command reference. Follow the documented syntax and quote paths that contain spaces.

WSF, custom extensions, and engine selection
The /e: option is for choosing an engine when a script uses a custom extension. For example, its purpose is to tell WSH which engine to use for that run; it does not permanently associate the extension with that engine. The option is separate from /job:, which selects a job inside a WSF file.
Windows version and configuration limits
Microsoft’s wscript page, last updated May 22, 2023, lists Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, among applicable systems. This is the scope stated by that documentation page, not a guarantee that every machine has identical policy, engines, or script settings. Check the system’s configuration if a command fails or an engine is unavailable.
