In a common residential cable setup, it connects to the cable network and provides Wi-Fi or Ethernet for data plus a phone jack for provider-managed voice service. The phrase also describes a different kind of business device that connects cellular networks to a VoIP phone system, so the exact meaning depends on context.
What does a wireless voice gateway do?
A residential cable voice gateway combines several functions in one unit: a cable modem for the provider’s broadband network, a router and Wi-Fi access point for local devices, and an embedded telephony adapter for telephone service. The cable operator’s network carries data, while compatible head-end equipment supports IP voice. The provider provisions the voice service; the gateway makes it available through a telephone port.

A Thomson DWG875/DWG875T manual describes its gateway as providing internet access and telephone voice and fax/modem services over a cable television network. That is the manual’s product description, not an independent performance assessment. Thomson DWG875/DWG875T user manual

What does “wireless” mean in this context?
For a residential cable gateway, “wireless” generally refers to its Wi-Fi access point. The broadband connection itself may arrive over coaxial cable, and a regular telephone typically connects to a LINE or RJ-11 jack. Ethernet ports provide wired local-network connections. The phone service is not simply Wi-Fi calling, and the device is not just a wireless router.

How is a cellular voice gateway different?
In business telephony, a wireless voice gateway can mean hardware that bridges a cellular network—such as GSM, WCDMA or LTE—to a VoIP phone system. OpenVox’s 2021 announcement for its SWG-3016/32 family described this cellular-to-VoIP use case. It is a different architecture from a cable modem with an embedded telephony adapter; the announcement does not establish current product availability or detailed present-day specifications. Can you connect a regular phone to one?
On a residential cable voice gateway, a compatible analog telephone or fax device connects to the designated LINE/RJ-11 port, not to the coaxial broadband connector or an Ethernet port. Having a phone jack alone does not activate telephone service: the provider must offer and provision voice service for that gateway and account.

Will any cable modem voice gateway work with your provider?
No. The exact model must be compatible with the provider’s broadband and voice systems, and the provider must support and provision it. A Motorola SURFboard SVG2501 manual, for example, says the service provider—not Motorola—is responsible for providing VoIP telephony through the equipment. Motorola SURFboard SVG2501 product manual

Before buying or replacing a unit, ask the provider whether it supports the exact model for both internet and telephone service. Check its DOCSIS and voice-service compatibility, phone-port type and count, Wi-Fi standard, Ethernet ports, and any battery backup you need. These features vary by model and provider configuration; a historical manual’s specifications do not establish that a device is still supported.

What a wireless voice gateway is not
- Not necessarily a cordless-phone base: a gateway connects services and networks; it may have a port for a separate analog phone.
- Not the same as Wi-Fi calling: Wi-Fi calling is a phone feature, while a cable voice gateway uses provider-supported telephony hardware and service.
- Not just a wireless router: the residential cable version also includes a cable modem and telephony adapter, while cellular-to-VoIP versions bridge mobile networks and a phone system.
