A wireless USB hub lets USB peripherals connect to a computer without each device running a direct USB cable to it. The name can describe two different approaches: standards-oriented Wireless USB hardware, or a device that shares USB peripherals over Wi-Fi or another IP network. They are not interchangeable, so check how a specific product connects, what the host requires, and whether it supports your peripherals.
What “wireless USB hub” means
A USB hub expands the number of USB peripherals a host can access. “Wireless” describes the connection between the peripheral-side hardware and the host; it does not guarantee a universal cable replacement or support for every USB device.

USB-IF lists the USB hub under device class code 09h, while Wireless USB-related host and device wire-adapter interfaces appear separately in its classifications. That distinction matters: a hub is one part of the arrangement, while Wireless USB describes a wireless interface. Product listings may use the phrase less precisely. USB-IF Defined Class Codes

Standards-oriented Wireless USB
Some historical Certified Wireless USB systems used a hub paired with a host adapter. For example, D-Link described its DUB-2240 as a four-port Wireless USB hub and its DUB-1210 as the adapter used with that hub; the adapter was sold separately. The DUB-2240 datasheet specifies a wireless frequency range of 3.1 GHz to 4.8 GHz. These are specifications of those historical models, not evidence of current availability, present-day operating-system support, or performance. D-Link DUB-2240 datasheet D-Link DUB-1210 datasheet

USB-IF’s 1997 white paper discusses making a wireless HID device appear to the USB host like a wired one. Its stated premise concerns HID-class devices, such as keyboards and mice; it should not be read as a promise that any USB peripheral will work wirelessly without limitations. Network-based USB sharing
A device server or sharing station can make attached USB peripherals accessible over Wi-Fi or another IP network. This is a separate approach from USB-IF Wireless USB. It may require vendor software, network configuration, a suitable power supply, and support for the exact peripheral and operating system. Check the product’s documentation rather than assuming the word “wireless” identifies its standard or capabilities.

- Multi-Function Device: Serves as both a USB server and print server, enabling multiple computers on the same network to share USB devices, such as printers, scanners, or storage devices, eliminates direct computer-to-device cabling
- Compatible with Printers: Converts USB printers into wireless printers. Added printers via using an IP address or hostname, supports RAW and IPP printing protocols. Compatible with printers from HP, Canon, Epson, and others. Can also connect printers using virtual USB connect software. Note: Mobile printing and AirPrint are not supported.
- Compatible with USB Devices: Integrates software and hardware to wirelessly connect USB devices like printers, scanners, and dongles; our virtual USB software simulates a direct USB connection, just like physically plugging the device into the computer.
- Network Connection Options: Flexible deployment via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet port; maintains stable connectivity for devices located anywhere within Local network coverage areas, whether at home or in a small office.
- Multi-system compatibility: Works with Windows, Linux, and macOS through lightweight client software; Please refer to user guide before use, and our dedicated tech support team is available to assist you with any setup or usage queries.
What to check before choosing one
- Connection method: Determine whether the product uses Wireless USB hardware or shares devices over an IP network.
- Host requirements: Check for a matched adapter, drivers, utility software, or network setup. Confirm whether required components are included.
- Peripheral support: Verify support for the particular device and the function you need. USB connectivity alone does not establish that every peripheral function will work.
- Compatibility: Confirm the operating system, host ports, and vendor support for the exact model.
- Power and placement: Check whether the hub needs external power and where it must sit relative to the host or network.
- Condition and availability: With older hardware, verify that it is actually being sold, its condition, and whether the listing includes the matched parts. Historical datasheets do not establish current stock or support.
How wireless docks fit in
A wireless dock may support USB devices as part of a broader connection setup, but that does not make every dock equivalent to a USB hub or a network-based USB device server. Microsoft’s USB documentation gives a wireless dock that supports USB devices as an example of USB peripheral connectivity; check each dock’s own documentation for its capabilities. Why the label alone is not enough
USB-IF’s shorthand for Wireless USB is “It’s USB, but without the cable.” Treat that as a description of the concept, not a compatibility guarantee. USB-IF’s document library also lists Wireless USB-related materials dated 2008 and 2012; those listings establish that the documents exist, not that older hardware is supported by current systems.
