What Is a Wireless Phone System?

A wireless phone system is a phone setup in which a handset communicates with nearby phone or network equipment over radio instead of a wire. The term does not identify one specific service: it may mean a cordless handset and base connected to a phone line, a Wi-Fi or DECT handset using internet calling, or wireless handsets connected to a business phone system.

What does “wireless” mean in a phone system?

“Wireless” describes the local connection between devices, not necessarily the route a call takes after leaving the handset. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) defines wireless communication broadly as communication between nodes without wires, usually using radio frequencies. It defines Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) as voice transmission over IP networks. CRTC glossary

So a wireless phone can still use a wired telephone line or internet connection elsewhere in the system. It is not automatically a cellular phone, and it is not automatically an internet phone.

Common types of wireless phone systems

Cordless phone with a base station

A household cordless phone has a handset that communicates by radio with a nearby base. The base connects to a telephone service, such as a traditional phone line. The handset is wireless around the home; the base and its connection to the service may be wired.

Wireless VoIP phone

A wireless VoIP phone uses a handset, cradle and battery, with a built-in Wi-Fi or DECT transceiver to connect to a home or office network. Calls then use VoIP over an IP network. ENERGY STAR distinguishes these wireless units from desktop wired VoIP phones and conference phones. ENERGY STAR: Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Phones

Wireless handsets for a business phone system

A business may connect wireless handsets to a private branch exchange (PBX), its private telephone system. The radio link handles movement within the workplace, while the PBX manages calls. This is a different arrangement from a household cordless phone, although both use a wireless handset and nearby equipment.

How does a wireless phone system work?

  1. The handset sends and receives audio by radio. Depending on the system, it communicates with a base station or connects to a nearby Wi-Fi access point using built-in Wi-Fi or DECT.
  2. The local equipment connects to the calling service. A cordless base may connect to a telephone line; a wireless VoIP phone uses an IP network; a business handset may connect through the organization’s PBX.
  3. The service routes the call to its destination. The radio link is only one part of the call path. The rest may involve a telephone network or the internet, depending on the setup.

Wireless phone system, cordless phone, VoIP phone and mobile phone: what’s the difference?

Term What it describes Typical connection
Wireless phone system An umbrella term for a phone arrangement with a radio link between a handset and nearby equipment. Varies: a base, Wi-Fi or DECT network, or business PBX.
Cordless phone A handset that communicates wirelessly with a base station. The base connects to the phone service; the handset uses a local radio link.
Wireless VoIP phone A handset used for calls over an IP network. Wi-Fi or DECT to a nearby home or office network, then VoIP over IP.
Mobile or cellular phone A phone using a cellular network for calls. Cellular coverage, rather than a nearby household or office base or access point.

Does a wireless VoIP phone need Wi-Fi?

Not necessarily. The wireless VoIP phones described by ENERGY STAR can use Wi-Fi or DECT to connect to a nearby network. Whether a particular phone needs Wi-Fi, uses DECT, or works with your service depends on that phone and the calling setup.

Because wireless VoIP depends on nearby routers or access points, its calling coverage is tied to that local network. ENERGY STAR notes that wireless VoIP phones may reach farther than traditional cordless phones but have more limited coverage than cellular phones; it gives no universal distance that applies to every home or office. What should you check before choosing one?

  • Service compatibility: Confirm that the handset and base work with your telephone line or VoIP provider.
  • Connection method: Check whether the phone uses Wi-Fi or DECT and what network equipment it requires.
  • Coverage: Consider where calls need to work in your home or office. Actual coverage depends on the equipment and environment; the term “wireless” alone does not guarantee a particular range.
  • System type: Make sure you are comparing a consumer cordless setup with another consumer phone, or a business handset with a system designed for your PBX.
  • Handset count: If you need multiple handsets, check how many the system supports.

If you are shopping for a wireless handset and base, “DECT cordless phone system” is a useful product category to look for. Check its phone-line or VoIP-service compatibility, handset capacity and coverage for your space before buying.
