It might use Bluetooth for a nearby connection, Wi-Fi to link compatible speakers around a home, or a dedicated wireless link for home theater. “Wireless” describes how the audio signal travels—not whether the equipment needs power or will work with products from other brands.
What makes a music system wireless?
The source sends audio to a speaker or another audio component over a wireless connection instead of an audio cable. The equipment may still need power cords, and a Wi-Fi system may depend on a working home network. Samsung, for example, describes its Wireless Multiroom system as speakers connected to a home internet network and controlled through a mobile app; compatible speakers can be grouped for the same song or used for different songs in different rooms. Samsung explains its Wireless Multiroom system.

Common types of wireless music systems
Bluetooth speakers
A Bluetooth speaker pairs directly with a phone or another source for playback, which suits listening in one room or on the go. Pairing alone does not mean a speaker can join a synchronized, whole-home system. Multiroom capability depends on the speaker’s supported features and platform. Sony notes that its own Wireless Multi-room feature requires compatible devices on the same Wi-Fi network and does not work over Bluetooth; that limitation applies to Sony’s feature, not every Bluetooth product. Sony describes how its Wireless Multi-Room feature works.
Wi-Fi multiroom speakers
Compatible speakers connect to a home network and are grouped through a supported app or platform. Depending on the system, speakers can play synchronized audio in several rooms, and some systems can play different content in different rooms. Features and compatibility vary, so the term “Wi-Fi speaker” by itself does not promise multiroom grouping. Walls, floors, distance from the router, and network stability can affect playback. Samsung lists its system’s multiroom capabilities.

Streamers for existing audio equipment
A wireless music streamer can send network audio to an existing stereo or powered speaker, if the equipment has a compatible input. For example, Audioengine says its B-Fi streamer works with its powered speaker systems that have line-level RCA or 3.5 mm inputs, or a digital optical input. That is a product-specific example, not a universal input standard for every streamer. Check the exact inputs, control method, and supported playback services before choosing one. Audioengine lists the B-Fi’s requirements and supported inputs.
Wireless home theater
A wireless home-theater link can carry audio from a transmitter to compatible speakers, avoiding speaker cables between those components. In WiSA’s described setup, powered speakers have built-in receivers and work with a compatible transmitter. The speakers and transmitter still need power, and compatibility depends on the specified technology and components. WiSA says its certified Home Theater components work together across brands; do not assume that any wireless home-theater products can be mixed freely. WiSA describes its Home Theater technology.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other wireless links are not interchangeable
Bluetooth commonly provides a direct connection from a source to a speaker. Wi-Fi systems use a home network and can support grouping across compatible devices. A named platform, such as AirPlay, or a dedicated home-theater technology describes a particular way to route audio; it does not make all wireless products mutually compatible.

The Bluetooth SIG says it enables multiple independent, synchronized audio streams between a source and one or more audio sinks. Whether a particular product supports that feature depends on its specifications; its existence does not mean ordinary Bluetooth pairing provides Wi-Fi-style multiroom control. What to check before choosing a system
- Where you want to listen: Decide whether you need one-room playback, synchronized music in several rooms, different content in different rooms, or home-theater audio.
- How it connects: Check whether the system uses Bluetooth, your home Wi-Fi network, or a dedicated transmitter and receiver. A network-based system may require an active, stable home network.
- What you already own: For a streamer, confirm that your stereo or powered speakers have the required audio input. For a multiroom or home-theater setup, check that each device supports the same platform or certified technology.
- How playback is controlled: Confirm whether setup and grouping require an app, hub, transmitter, or other component, and which sources and services the system supports.
- Power and placement: Wireless audio removes some signal cables, not necessarily power cords. Speaker distance, walls, floors, and router location can affect a network connection.
Compatibility is specific to a system, platform, or certification. Audioengine says B-Fi and Sonos systems cannot be integrated into one system, although each can be used separately or through AirPlay. Treat this as guidance about those products, not a universal rule for every streamer or platform. Audioengine explains B-Fi compatibility.
