Miracast models use Wi-Fi Direct for the wireless link, but both the sending device and the adapter must support Miracast.
What a wireless display adapter does
The adapter receives a device’s screen output wirelessly and passes it to the display through a physical connection, commonly HDMI. It is a screen-mirroring or projection setup: the display shows what the sending device is outputting. Microsoft describes Miracast as a wireless display standard based on Wi-Fi Direct, which creates a peer-to-peer connection between the source and receiver. The adapter does not make every phone or computer compatible automatically. The sender and receiver need a compatible wireless display standard. Also, “casting” is used loosely on product pages; an HDMI streaming dongle is not necessarily a Miracast receiver, so check the standards each device supports.
How it connects to a TV or monitor
Many Miracast adapters use an HDMI plug for video and a separate USB connection for power. Microsoft says its Wireless Display Adapter draws power from USB, so its USB lead must connect to a USB charging port or another suitable power source. The display also needs an available HDMI input. Microsoft’s setup instructions cover those connections.

Once connected, select the adapter’s HDMI input on the display and start wireless projection from the sending device. On a compatible Windows PC, press Windows+K and select the adapter. On other Miracast-enabled devices, look in settings for “Miracast” or “Cast” and follow the device maker’s connection steps.
What to check before choosing one
- Sender compatibility: Confirm that the phone, tablet, or computer supports the same wireless display standard as the receiver. Windows users can press Windows+K to check for available wireless displays; Microsoft notes that a device without Miracast support may need a wired connection or another compatible option. - Exact receiver model: Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the specific adapter generation. Supported devices and features can differ between versions; compatibility stated for one model should not be assumed for another.
- Ports and power: Make sure the display has an available HDMI input and that you can power the adapter over USB or with the power source specified by its manufacturer.
- Protected content: Check HDCP requirements if you plan to display protected video. Microsoft says full functionality is not available with non-HDCP devices for certain versions of its adapter.
- Wireless range and environment: Microsoft lists a range of up to 23 feet for its Wireless Display Adapter. That is a manufacturer-stated specification, not a guarantee for every room or wireless environment. See the Microsoft Store product listing.
Wireless display adapter vs. streaming device
A wireless display adapter is intended to receive a live projection from a compatible device. A streaming device, by contrast, may run its own apps and play content directly on the TV. The names and marketing terms can overlap, so identify the connection standard and intended function rather than relying on labels such as “wireless,” “casting,” or “HDMI dongle.”

Does the adapter need Wi-Fi?
With Miracast, the projection link uses Wi-Fi Direct, a peer-to-peer connection. A conventional router connection is not the defining requirement for that link. Microsoft’s Windows projection documentation also discusses a local-network projection option and reports that, in its observation, 90% of users starting a wireless projection stream were already connected to a home or business Wi-Fi network.
