What Is a Wireless Broadband Router? Definition and How It Works

A wireless broadband router creates a local network and shares an internet connection with devices, usually over Wi-Fi. The phrase can also describe equipment that receives broadband wirelessly.

A wireless broadband router connects devices on a local network and directs their traffic to and from an internet connection. In a typical home, the ISP supplies broadband access and the router shares that connection over Wi-Fi. The router provides the wireless link; it does not, by itself, provide internet service.

What does “wireless broadband router” mean?

The phrase usually means a router that connects phones, computers, and other devices to a local network wirelessly, typically using Wi-Fi, and routes their traffic through a broadband connection. “Wireless” may describe the link between the router and your devices—not the connection from your home to the internet.

That distinction matters because the same phrase can also refer to equipment that receives broadband over a wireless service, such as a mobile network. The intended meaning depends on context.

Router, Wi-Fi, broadband, and modem: the difference

  • Router: Connects devices on a local network and directs data between them and the internet connection.
  • Wi-Fi: The wireless networking technology the router can use to connect nearby devices. A Wi-Fi signal alone does not guarantee internet access.
  • Broadband service: Internet access supplied to the premises by an ISP over an access connection. The FCC distinguishes the broadband connection from the service delivered over it. Its Broadband Data Collection describes a broadband connection as a wired line or wireless channel that transfers information to or from the internet above 200 kbps in at least one direction; that is an FCC reporting definition, not a current consumer speed recommendation. FCC Broadband Data Collection definitions.
  • Modem: In common home setups, connects the ISP’s access line to the home network equipment. It may be a separate device or built into the router.

When a modem and router functions are combined in one unit, it is often called a gateway. With separate equipment, the modem connects to the ISP line and the router connects to the modem.

How does a wireless broadband router work?

  1. Your ISP delivers internet access to your home through a wired connection or a wireless service.
  2. A modem or built-in modem function connects that access line or service to your home equipment.
  3. The router creates a local network and usually broadcasts Wi-Fi so compatible devices can join it.
  4. When a connected device sends or receives data, the router directs that traffic between the local network and the internet connection.

The FTC describes a home Wi-Fi network as a wireless network usually created by a router that sends a signal through the air. FTC: How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network

Does “wireless” mean the internet service is wireless?

Not necessarily. In a common home arrangement, broadband reaches the premises over a wired ISP connection, and the router makes that connection available to devices over Wi-Fi. In another arrangement, a fixed-wireless or mobile service delivers broadband to the premises wirelessly.

Those descriptions appeared in a proposal seeking comment, not a final rule. FCC 23-83

How is a router different from a mobile hotspot?

A typical home router distributes an existing internet connection around a premises. A mobile hotspot or cellular router can instead receive internet service through a mobile network and share it with nearby devices. The exact capabilities depend on the device and service, so the label “wireless broadband router” alone does not identify how it gets online.

Why secure the router and Wi-Fi separately?

Your Wi-Fi password controls who can join the wireless network; the router’s administrative password controls who can change its settings. They serve different purposes, so secure both. The FTC recommends changing default administrative credentials and network settings, enabling encryption, and checking for hardware and software updates. It also suggests considering whether to disable remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), since these features can weaken security. Menus and available settings vary by manufacturer. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance and FTC guidance on securing connected devices.

An unprotected Wi-Fi network may be accessible to devices within range, and people connected to it may be able to see activity or personal information, according to the FTC. These steps are general consumer guidance, not a guarantee that a particular router is secure.

Does a router itself provide internet access?

No. A router can create a local network and share an available internet connection, but you still need an ISP connection or another internet source. The FCC has also clarified that someone using a wireless router or Wi-Fi hotspot to create a personal network not intentionally offered to others is not, on that basis alone, providing broadband internet access service under its definition. FCC 17-166 (2017)
