What Is a Wired Internet Provider? Definition and Connection Types

A wired Internet provider sells Internet access over a physical connection, such as copper/DSL, coaxial cable, or fiber. Availability depends on your address.

A wired Internet provider sells Internet access delivered over a physical connection, such as copper telephone wire, coaxial cable, or fiber-optic cable. The phrase describes how the connection reaches a home or business; it is not a single, separate legal category. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) uses the category “Wired Broadband Internet Access Service Providers” for providers of wired broadband service, excluding dial-up providers.

What does “wired Internet provider” mean?

A wired Internet provider is a company that sells Internet access using a physical wired broadband connection. The connection is the line or channel that carries data; the Internet access service is what the customer buys. Those roles do not always belong to the same company: the FCC notes that the company operating the broadband facilities may or may not sell the Internet service delivered over them. The FCC’s fixed-broadband definition page describes a connection as a wired line or wireless channel that enables Internet information to be sent or received at rates exceeding 200 kbps in at least one direction. That is a threshold for the FCC’s regulatory definition, not a recommendation for household service or a measure of adequate speed today.

Which Internet connections are wired?

The medium that carries the connection determines whether it is wired. Common types include:

  • DSL and other copper connections: Internet service carried over copper wire, including asymmetric or symmetric DSL. FCC examples also include Ethernet over copper and T-1.
  • Cable Internet: Service delivered over coaxial cable or a hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) network. FCC examples include DOCSIS technology.
  • Fiber to the premises: Fiber-optic cable delivered to a home or business.
  • Other wireline services: Some copper-based or wireline technologies, such as T-carrier services, may also fall into this broad category and are more likely to matter in business contexts.

The FCC lists these technologies in its Fixed Technology Codes and wired-provider materials.

Is wired Internet the same as fixed Internet?

No. “Wired” describes the physical medium. “Fixed” describes service intended primarily for use at a stationary endpoint, and it includes wired connections as well as fixed wireless and fixed satellite. A fixed wireless provider is therefore a fixed-broadband provider, but not a wired Internet provider. FCC order published in the Federal Register, May 22, 2024

How to tell what a provider offers at your address

Wired service availability varies by location, so a provider’s general coverage claim does not establish that a particular technology or plan is available at your home or business. FCC availability reporting is organized by location and technology. FCC: Fixed Broadband Availability Data Overview

  1. Enter the exact service address in a provider’s availability checker.
  2. Confirm the connection type offered there: fiber, cable/HFC, DSL/copper, or another technology.
  3. Compare advertised download and upload speeds. The FCC says advertised speeds should reflect bandwidths an end user may reasonably expect, rather than theoretical capacity alone. FCC: Fixed Broadband Subscription Definitions
  4. Check the plan’s current terms directly with the provider, including price, contract, and any data allowance. These details can differ by address and offer.

Wired Internet provider vs. Internet connection owner

The company that owns or operates the physical network may differ from the retail company that bills the customer for Internet access. The FCC describes this distinction in its Fixed Broadband Subscription Definitions. As a result, the name on an Internet bill does not necessarily identify the company that built or operates every part of the connection.
