What Is a Wi-Fi Network Name? SSID Explained

A Wi-Fi network name is called an SSID. It identifies the wireless network, while a separate password or security key helps protect access.

A Wi-Fi network name is its SSID (Service Set Identifier): the label a wireless access point advertises so devices can tell networks apart. It is not the Wi-Fi password. The name identifies the network; the password or security key helps control who can join it.

What does SSID mean?

SSID stands for Service Set Identifier. In plain terms, it is the name you see when choosing a Wi-Fi network on a phone, computer, or other device. NIST defines an SSID as a name assigned to a wireless access point so devices can distinguish it from another access point (NIST glossary).

A router or access point advertises this name to nearby devices. For a home network, the SSID may be a name chosen by the owner or a default label supplied with the router.

Is the Wi-Fi name the same as the password?

No. The SSID is the network’s label; the network password, also called a security key, is used to authenticate a device when it joins a secured network. Windows setup guidance lists the default network name and network security key as separate items (Microsoft Support).

Where is the Wi-Fi network name set?

The SSID is configured in the router or access point’s settings, not by changing a device’s saved Wi-Fi connection. The exact controls vary by equipment. Microsoft notes that access-point software can be used to change the SSID and recommends consulting the equipment documentation for setup details (Microsoft Support).

Changing the name can make your network easier to recognize, especially if nearby networks have similar names. Because the SSID is visible to nearby devices, avoid including identifying details such as your full name or street address. Changing the name does not replace setting a strong password and appropriate Wi-Fi security.

Should 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi use the same name?

A router may use one SSID across supported frequency bands or separate SSIDs for each band. Neither naming approach is universally best; follow the router maker’s guidance and consider whether you need to choose a band manually.

Setup What you see When it may help
One SSID across bands Devices see one network name rather than separate names for each band. Apple recommends a single, unique, case-sensitive name across supported bands in its router guidance. Device and router behavior still depends on the equipment (Apple Support).
Separate SSIDs Each band has a distinguishable name, such as a shared base name with a band label. Microsoft says separate names can help users identify the band when selecting a network (Microsoft Support).

Using one name does not guarantee that every device will choose the band you prefer, and separate names do not by themselves make a connection faster or more secure. If a device or router behaves unreliably with one arrangement, consult its manufacturer’s recommendations before changing the SSID configuration.

Does hiding the SSID make Wi-Fi secure?

No. Hiding a network name is not a substitute for access security. Microsoft advises against using a hidden SSID as a security measure. Apple likewise notes that hidden networks can still be detected and that using them can expose identifying information (Apple Support).

Use the router’s appropriate security settings and a strong network password instead. Microsoft recommends WPA3 when it is supported by both the router and the PC; the available options depend on the equipment (Microsoft Support).
