What Is a Web Page Editor? Definition, WYSIWYG and HTML Editing

A web page editor is software for creating or modifying web content. It may offer visual editing, source-code access, or both; its name alone does not define its features.

A web page editor is software for creating or changing web content. Depending on the tool, you may edit a page visually, work directly with its HTML or other source code, or switch between those approaches. “Web page editor” describes a broad category, not one fixed set of features.

What does “web page editor” mean?

The W3C defines an authoring tool as software that authors use to create or modify web content for other people. A web page editor is one kind of authoring tool: it provides an interface for building or changing page content. The W3C definition is in its Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines 2.0.

Some editors focus on visual controls; others expose the page’s markup or code. A particular editor may offer both. The term alone does not tell you which content types, editing modes, or supporting features a tool includes.

What does WYSIWYG mean in an editor?

WYSIWYG stands for “what you see is what you get.” In a WYSIWYG editing view, authors select and manipulate page elements as objects rather than making every change by editing markup. The W3C uses that description in its authoring-tool guidance.

A visual editing view is not a guarantee that every visitor will experience the page in exactly the same way. The rendered result can differ across user agents and accessibility contexts, so the editing canvas should not be treated as a complete representation of every end user’s experience. The W3C discusses this limitation in its accessibility guidance.

Is a web page editor the same as an HTML editor?

Not necessarily. An HTML editor specifically provides a way to work with HTML markup. A web page editor may provide that source-editing capability, a visual interface, or both. The labels can overlap, but they do not promise the same workflow.

For example, Oracle documentation describes an editor for JSP and HTML files with design, source, and preview views. Microsoft documentation also describes a web page editor with WYSIWYG and HTML editing modes, including IntelliSense and validation. These are examples of particular products, not requirements for every editor.

What features might a web page editor have?

Features vary by product and task. Oracle’s documented interface illustrates several possibilities:

  • Design view: edit page elements visually.
  • Source view: work with the page’s markup or code.
  • Preview: inspect a rendered page; Oracle describes its preview as separate and non-editable.
  • Properties and outline views: inspect or manage element settings and page structure.
  • Tag palette and synchronized selection: use available tags and connect selections across design and source views.

These details come from Oracle’s documentation for its JSP and HTML editor. They are not a universal checklist, and documentation for a particular product does not establish that it is currently available.

How to evaluate an editor for your task

Start with what you need to create or modify, then check how the tool supports that work:

  • Content type: confirm that it supports the pages and content you intend to edit.
  • Editing approach: decide whether you need visual controls, direct source access, or both.
  • Inspection tools: look for a preview and any structure or property controls that would help you understand the page.
  • Accessibility: consider both whether the authoring interface is accessible to its users and whether it helps produce accessible content. A visual canvas alone does not establish either.

Why context can change the meaning

“Web page editor” can refer to the general category of software or to a named feature in a specific product. Cognex, for example, uses “Web Page Editor” for a WYSIWYG interface for creating interactive HMI pages for vision applications. Oracle uses the phrase for an editor for JSP and HTML files. When you encounter the term, check the surrounding product description to determine which meaning applies.
