A virtual private network (VPN) is a logical network built over an existing public network such as the Internet. It creates an authenticated tunnel between a client and a VPN gateway, then applies routing and firewall rules to the traffic inside that tunnel. Encryption can protect packets in transit, but a VPN does not make an infected device safe, guarantee anonymity from the VPN operator, or fix insecure services.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenVPN, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
You can run your own OpenVPN server on a maintained Linux, BSD, or Windows host, either at home or on a cloud VPS. A reliable deployment needs more than an OpenVPN package: you need a reachable public address, certificates, a non-conflicting tunnel subnet, forwarding and NAT, DNS policy, firewall rules, client profiles, and a maintenance plan.

What is a VPN?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines a VPN as a restricted-use logical network constructed from the resources of a relatively public physical network, often by using encryption and tunneling. In practical terms, the VPN creates an overlay network across an untrusted network. Your device sends packets into a virtual interface, the VPN client encapsulates them, and the VPN server authenticates, decrypts, and forwards them according to its routes and firewall policy.
What a VPN changes
- On the local network: A properly configured tunnel can prevent a hostile Wi-Fi operator or other local observer from reading the protected traffic between your device and the VPN gateway.
- For private access: The server can route you to home, office, lab, or cloud subnets that are not publicly exposed.
- For Internet egress: In a full-tunnel design, destinations see the VPN gateway’s address rather than the client’s local connection address. The gateway and destination services can still observe or log traffic.
- For policy: The VPN server becomes a point where routes, DNS choices, authentication, and firewall rules can be enforced.
What a VPN does not solve
Encryption is only one part of VPN security. A VPN design can provide confidentiality, integrity, data-origin authentication, replay protection, and access control, but insecure configuration and software flaws remain exploitable. Malware on the endpoint can read data before it enters the tunnel or after it leaves. A VPN also does not make an untrusted application trustworthy, stop a destination website from tracking an account, or prevent the VPN operator from seeing traffic that reaches the gateway in clear text.

How OpenVPN works
OpenVPN is an open-source SSL/TLS VPN daemon. Its TLS mode establishes a control channel and a data channel multiplexed over one TCP or UDP port. The control channel negotiates parameters, authenticates peers, and establishes session keys. The data channel then carries encrypted packets through a routed TUN interface or a bridged TAP interface.
Certificates, keys, and the control channel
In the usual certificate-based design, a certificate authority (CA) signs a distinct certificate and private key for the server and for each client. During the TLS exchange, the peers validate the certificate chain and derive session keys. TLS Auth or TLS Crypt adds an additional protection layer for the control channel before or during that exchange, helping the server reject unauthenticated control traffic and reducing exposure to probing.
The CA private key is the root of trust for the deployment. Store it offline or in a tightly protected administrative environment. A client profile normally contains the CA certificate, the client’s certificate and private key, and the server endpoint. Possession of an unrevoked private key can grant access, so profile files must be protected like passwords.
UDP versus TCP
OpenVPN can carry its tunnel over UDP or TCP and can traverse NAT and some proxies. UDP is normally the performance-oriented choice because it avoids layering a reliable TCP stream inside another TCP stream. TCP can be useful when a restrictive network permits only TCP egress, but it can add latency and suffer from TCP-over-TCP retransmission problems. Choose based on the network you must traverse and the reliability requirements; neither transport is universally best.

TUN versus TAP
A TUN device carries routed IP packets and is the normal starting point for remote access. TAP carries Ethernet frames and is intended for layer-2 bridging, such as a requirement to extend broadcast-dependent protocols across the tunnel. Bridging is more complex and usually unnecessary for ordinary access to private IP services.
Can you run your own OpenVPN server?
Yes. You need administrative control of a host that can accept inbound traffic and forward packets. That host may be a computer on your home connection or a virtual machine with a cloud provider. The practical requirements are:
- A stable public IPv4 or IPv6 address, or an FQDN that resolves to the server. An FQDN is preferable when the address can change.
- A supported OpenVPN build and an operating system that you can patch.
- An interface and transport port on which OpenVPN can listen.
- A private tunnel address pool that does not overlap common client networks.
- IP forwarding, routes, and firewall rules that express exactly which networks clients may reach.
- NAT or masquerading when tunneled clients must reach networks that do not have a return route to the VPN pool.
- A DNS policy: internal resolvers for private names, public resolvers for Internet names, or a deliberate combination.
- A process for issuing, protecting, revoking, and replacing credentials.
A home deployment may also require router port forwarding, a dynamic-DNS updater, and a way to handle carrier-grade NAT. If the Internet provider does not give you an inbound-reachable address, a conventional inbound OpenVPN server cannot accept connections directly without another reachable relay or gateway.
Plan the network before installing
Choose the endpoint and name
Use a maintained Linux, BSD, or Windows host with a stable address. Select an FQDN that you control and verify that it resolves correctly from an outside network. Keep administration separate from the VPN listener where possible: management access should be restricted to a trusted network or a separate secure access channel.

Select a non-conflicting tunnel subnet
The official routed sample uses a TUN device, UDP port 1194, and the private pool 10.8.0.0/24. These are starting values, not mandatory defaults. Do not use a pool that overlaps a client’s home, hotel, office, or mobile network. Overlap causes the client to treat the same address as both local and remote, producing intermittent or completely failed access. Record the tunnel subnet and every private route you intend to advertise.
Decide between split tunnel and full tunnel
In a split tunnel, the VPN advertises only selected private routes. Ordinary Internet traffic leaves through the client’s local connection. This reduces server bandwidth and keeps local Internet breakout, but every private route and DNS suffix must be designed deliberately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →In a full tunnel, the server becomes the client’s Internet gateway. General traffic and usually DNS queries are routed through it. This centralizes egress filtering and can prevent local-network interception, but it consumes server bandwidth, requires NAT or upstream return routes, and makes the server responsible for DNS availability and Internet gateway security.
Step-by-step: run an OpenVPN server
- Prepare the host and DNS. Assign or verify the public address, create the FQDN record, and confirm from an external network that the name resolves to the intended host. Document the operating-system version, interface name, and the administrative access path before changing firewall rules.
- Install a supported OpenVPN release. Use the current package instructions for your operating-system release and the OpenVPN documentation for that version. Package names, service units, configuration paths, and cryptographic defaults differ between distributions; do not copy an old command sequence without checking its applicability.
- Create a private PKI. Generate a CA, then issue a separate server certificate and key and a separate client certificate and key for every device or user. Keep the CA key offline or otherwise tightly protected. Never use one shared client certificate when you need individual accountability or revocation.
- Define the server’s listener and tunnel. Configure a routed TUN device and select a transport. A common starting point is UDP on port 1194 with the
10.8.0.0/24pool, matching the official sample. Change the values when they conflict with your networks, and verify the installed release’s syntax and defaults. Bind the listener only to the intended interface where your design permits. - Configure authentication and TLS protection. Reference the CA, server certificate, and server key. Set a modern TLS policy, add TLS Crypt or TLS Auth where supported, and choose authenticated modern data-channel ciphers. Remove obsolete algorithms instead of enabling them permanently for compatibility. The cited Access Server documentation lists TLS 1.2 as its default minimum; verify the actual minimum and available settings in your installed release.
- Enable forwarding and routes. Turn on IP forwarding on the host. Add routes for each private network that clients need, and decide whether the server should advertise only those routes or a default route for full tunneling. On the private side, ensure that routers know how to return traffic to the VPN pool; otherwise configure narrowly scoped NAT or masquerading where appropriate.
- Set DNS behavior. For private applications, provide resolvers that can answer internal names and advertise the relevant search domains. For a full tunnel, route DNS through the server and firewall unwanted alternate paths. For a split tunnel, document which names use internal DNS and which continue to use the client’s local resolver. A tunnel that carries application traffic but leaves sensitive DNS queries outside the policy is incomplete.
- Build the edge firewall policy. Permit only the selected OpenVPN transport on the public interface. Permit forwarding from the tunnel to the exact destination networks and ports required, and allow return traffic. Keep SSH, remote desktop, web administration, and other management services off the public interface unless there is a compelling reason and an additional access control. The VPN port alone does not secure an exposed host.
- Create and distribute client profiles. Embed the correct CA certificate, client certificate and private key, server FQDN, port, and transport. Give each device its own identity. Transfer profiles through a protected channel, store them with restrictive permissions, and record which identity belongs to which device. A lost device requires prompt revocation and replacement, not merely a password change.
- Test one client at a time. Connect from a network different from the server’s network. Confirm certificate validation, the assigned tunnel address, expected routes, access to each intended private service, and DNS resolution. In a full tunnel, verify the public egress address and DNS path. In a split tunnel, verify that unrelated Internet traffic still uses the intended local path. Save a known-good configuration and rollback instructions before changing forwarding or firewall rules.
- Establish maintenance. Patch the operating system and OpenVPN, review authentication and routing logs, rotate credentials on a schedule appropriate to your risk, revoke devices that are lost or decommissioned, back up configuration securely, and test restoration. Recheck TLS and cipher settings after upgrades because package defaults can change.
Configuration choices at a glance
| Choice | Option A | Option B | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transport | UDP | TCP | Use UDP for the usual performance-oriented design; use TCP when network policy permits TCP but blocks UDP, accepting possible latency and TCP-over-TCP drawbacks. |
| Traffic scope | Split tunnel | Full tunnel | Split tunnel advertises selected private routes and preserves local Internet breakout. Full tunnel sends general traffic and usually DNS through the VPN gateway. |
| Virtual interface | TUN | TAP | TUN routes IP packets and is the normal remote-access choice. TAP carries Ethernet frames when layer-2 bridging is genuinely required. |
| Deployment model | Community OpenVPN | Access Server | The community daemon offers direct configuration and flexibility. Access Server adds a management interface and documented controls for address pools, routing, DNS, authentication, clustering, and Data Channel Offload. |
| Sample values | UDP port 1194 | 10.8.0.0/24 pool | These values come from the official routed sample. Check for conflicts and verify defaults against the installed release before using them. |
Common failures and how to diagnose them
The client cannot connect
Check DNS resolution, the server’s public address, the selected UDP or TCP port, upstream router forwarding, and the host firewall. Confirm that OpenVPN is listening on the expected interface and that the client profile uses the same transport and port. If the server sits behind carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may be impossible without a reachable intermediary.

The tunnel connects but private services do not
First inspect the client’s assigned tunnel address and routes. Then check host IP forwarding, forwarding firewall rules, private-side return routes, and NAT requirements. A successful TLS handshake proves authentication and tunnel establishment; it does not prove that the server can route to the destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNames fail while IP addresses work
This is usually a DNS policy problem. Verify which resolver the client uses after connection, whether the resolver is reachable through the advertised route, and whether the required search domain is present. In a full tunnel, look for an alternate local DNS path that bypasses the server. In a split tunnel, ensure internal names have an explicit route to internal DNS.
Some locations work and others do not
Look for overlapping subnets. A client on a hotel network using the same private range as the VPN or office may send packets locally instead of into the tunnel. Move the tunnel pool or redesign the conflicting private network; simply adding more routes cannot reliably fix identical address spaces.
A lost device still has access
Revoke its certificate, remove or block the identity in the server’s authorization policy, issue a replacement for the legitimate user, and review logs for subsequent connection attempts. Do not rely on a shared certificate that cannot be attributed or revoked independently.
Best Value
Security and privacy boundaries
Self-hosting changes whom you trust; it does not eliminate trust. You control the VPN host, its logs, its updates, and its routing policy, but the host can observe traffic that exits there, and destination services can still log activity. Your Internet provider can usually see that an encrypted connection exists even when it cannot read the tunneled contents. Endpoint compromise remains outside the VPN’s protection.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use separate identities, least-privilege firewall rules, modern TLS and data-channel settings, protected management access, and prompt revocation. Keep the CA key away from the running server when practical. Monitor authentication failures, certificate changes, route changes, and unexpected forwarding. NIST’s security guidance is relevant here: encryption does not compensate for software defects or insecure configuration.
Performance and Data Channel Offload
OpenVPN Access Server documents Data Channel Offload (DCO), which moves data-channel encryption and decryption into kernel space. DCO can improve performance when its kernel module is installed and compatible with the host and OpenVPN build. Treat it as an optional optimization: establish correct routing, secure cryptography, logging, and recovery first, then measure throughput and latency under your actual workload. Do not assume that enabling DCO fixes an undersized host, a congested uplink, or a poorly designed route.
What running your own server costs in practice
The software choice is only one part of the cost. A home server may use existing hardware but needs an inbound-reachable connection, power, backups, and time for updates. A cloud VPS adds recurring hosting charges and may impose bandwidth, address, or acceptable-use limits. Before selecting a provider, confirm that VPN workloads are permitted and that the plan supplies the public address, interface control, firewall access, and bandwidth your users need. The technical requirements remain the same in either location: reachable endpoint, listener, client pool, routes, forwarding or NAT, DNS, and maintenance.
When a self-hosted OpenVPN server is the right choice
- Choose self-hosting when you need controlled access to your own private networks, individual certificates, custom routes, or a gateway whose logs and policies you administer.
- Prefer a managed service when you cannot patch a public host, maintain a PKI, monitor logs, or troubleshoot routing and DNS.
- Use a full tunnel only when the server has sufficient bandwidth and you want centralized egress and DNS policy.
- Use a split tunnel when the primary goal is private-network access and local Internet breakout is acceptable.
The durable design is not “open a port and copy a profile.” It is a complete system: authenticated identities, a non-overlapping address plan, explicit routes, forwarding and firewall policy, deliberate DNS handling, protected administration, and continuous maintenance.
