A voice remote control is a handheld remote with a microphone and a button or other control that activates voice input. Press or hold that control, speak a search or command, and a compatible TV or streaming device can find content or carry out supported actions. Compatibility, pairing, internet access, language and available features vary by device.
How does a voice remote work?
- Check support. The remote and the TV or streaming player must support the same voice feature.
- Pair the remote if required. Wireless voice remotes may need to be paired with the player or TV. Roku describes pairing as a wireless connection; Sony requires the remote to be paired and the TV to have an active internet connection for the voice-search function described in its support guide.
- Activate the microphone and speak. Most documented examples use push-to-talk: press and hold a microphone, voice or Assistant button while making a request. Google TV Help gives the instruction, “Press and hold the Google Assistant button while you ask a question or say a command.”
- Review the result. Depending on the device and request, it may return a content search, open a supported app or perform a supported control action.
For example, supported requests shown in manufacturer help include “search for comedies,” “Open YouTube,” and “What should I watch?” Exact commands and results depend on the product, language, region and apps the device can search.

Does a voice remote always listen?
No. The documented Google, Roku and Sony examples use a button to activate voice input, rather than requiring the remote to listen continuously for a wake phrase. Some models offer hands-free activation, but it is a model-specific feature: Roku documents it on the Voice Remote Pro, where it is enabled with a switch.

No. Voice remotes are designed for particular TVs or streaming devices and are not generally interchangeable. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact remote and device model before buying a replacement. Google says its Google TV Streamer Voice Remote works with Google TV Streamer (4K) or Chromecast with Google TV, and can also control a TV, soundbar or receiver. Sony notes that remote type and availability vary by model and country or region.

Connection method can differ, too. Roku distinguishes basic infrared (IR) remotes, which need to be aimed at the device, from wireless voice remotes that pair with compatible Roku equipment and do not require direct pointing. Other brands have their own pairing and compatibility requirements.
What can you do with one?
Voice search is one use, not the whole feature set. A compatible remote may also control connected equipment or include convenience features. Their availability varies by model.

What affects whether voice search works?
- Compatibility and pairing: The remote must be supported by the TV or streaming device and paired where required.
- Internet and account setup: Some voice-search functions require an active internet connection; account configuration may also affect the available experience.
- Language and region: Supported languages and features vary by product and location.
- Searchable apps and content: A request may not return results from apps or services the device cannot search.
- Command support: A remote can only trigger actions that its connected device and software support.
Choosing or replacing a voice remote
- Match the exact device. Confirm the remote works with your TV or streaming-player model; a similar brand name or microphone button alone does not establish compatibility.
- Choose the activation style you want. Decide whether push-to-talk is sufficient or whether you need a model with documented hands-free operation.
- Check the actions and extras. Verify support for content search, app commands, TV power and volume, and any desired shortcut, finder, backlight or headphone features.
- Confirm current regional details. Consult the manufacturer’s current compatibility and setup information, since availability and supported features can vary by model and region.
A Roku Voice Remote or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote can serve as a replacement or upgrade only for supported devices; neither is a universal TV remote.
