It is a workload label, not one standardized chip design: a VPU may be dedicated silicon or a block integrated into a larger system. Because “VPU” can also mean a graphics-oriented or video-processing unit, check how a particular vendor uses the acronym.
What does VPU mean?
In computer vision, VPU usually stands for visual processing unit or vision processing unit. Intel’s glossary defines a Visual Processing Unit as “dedicated silicon that is designed for processing computer vision media including images and video.” Intel Computer Vision Glossary
The term describes what hardware is intended to do, rather than a single required architecture. Implementations differ: MediaTek describes its MVPU as a general-purpose DSP optimized for computer vision and neural-network applications, while Intel has described dedicated Movidius VPU silicon. MediaTek Edge AI Intel Computer Vision Glossary
Why can “VPU” mean different things?
The acronym is not used consistently across every era or product category. In computer-vision and edge-AI contexts, it generally refers to a visual or vision processing unit. In other contexts, it can refer to a video processing unit; historically, ATI used “VPU” for PC graphics products in a 2004 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Industry analysis also treats VPU as a category of vision-processing microprocessors or AI accelerators, not as a formal standard specifying one design. Jon Peddie Research, “Development of the VPU” (July 16, 2018) When a product page says “VPU,” look for the vendor’s expansion of the acronym and the tasks the block supports.
What does a VPU do?
A VPU accelerates operations on visual input. Depending on the implementation, those operations may include image or video processing, computer-vision algorithms, or neural-network inference. Examples of potential applications include smart security cameras, gesture-controlled devices, industrial machine vision, photography, videography, and video-stream playback. The exact capabilities depend on the particular product. Intel Computer Vision Glossary MediaTek Edge AI

A VPU may be a component inside a larger system rather than a separate device. Intel’s Movidius Neural Compute Stick is one historical example of a standalone development device powered by a VPU: Intel described it as fanless and intended for deep-learning development. Its 2017 announcement of the Myriad X VPU described image and visual processing alongside deep-learning inference. Those historical announcements establish what the products were, not their current availability or software compatibility. Intel Myriad X announcement (August 28, 2017)
How is a VPU different from a CPU, GPU, NPU, or ISP?
These labels describe different roles, but they are not mutually exclusive categories in every product. A vision-oriented VPU can overlap with neural-network acceleration, and some historical graphics products were called VPUs. The vendor’s description and the workload matter more than the name alone.

| Processor type | Typical role | How it relates to a VPU |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Runs general-purpose programs. | Can run vision software, but is not necessarily a specialized visual accelerator. |
| GPU | Commonly handles graphics and highly parallel computation. | May overlap in parallel workloads; historical graphics products have also used the VPU label. |
| VPU (vision or visual sense) | Targets visual-data processing or computer-vision acceleration. | May be dedicated silicon or an integrated block; designs vary. |
| NPU | Typically targets neural-network workloads. | A vision VPU may also accelerate neural-network inference, so the roles can overlap. |
| ISP | Processes and conditions images from camera sensors. | Can be one component in a camera pipeline alongside other processing blocks. |
These are useful distinctions by intended role, not guarantees of a particular implementation. The available sources do not establish a universal ranking for speed, power use, or capability across these processor types. Jon Peddie Research MediaTek Edge AI Intel Computer Vision Glossary
