A virtual tape system (VTS) is an enterprise storage system that presents tape drives and volumes to host software while managing data on underlying storage such as disk, physical tape, or—in some supported configurations—object storage. The host keeps using tape-oriented workflows; the VTS virtualizes the drives and volumes and manages where their data resides.
What a virtual tape system means
IBM defines a VTS as a storage solution for tape data that combines disk arrays, tape drives, tape automation, and intelligent management software. It is a storage architecture, not simply software that makes an ordinary disk behave like a tape drive. [IBM TS7700 documentation]

The key distinction is between the logical interface the host sees and the physical storage the system uses. A host can write to a virtual tape drive and address virtual tape volumes even though the data is held on disk cache or another storage tier rather than on a cartridge mounted in a physical drive.

- The host requests a tape drive and volume. The VTS presents emulated tape devices and volumes to the accessing system. IBM describes the TS7700 as appearing to a host as a collection of tape drives. [IBM: Virtual device operation]
- The system handles the tape-like operation. Host software continues to work with the virtual drive and volume, while the VTS manages the storage behind that interface. In the TS7700 implementation, the virtual drive’s media is direct-access storage (DASD), not physical tape. [IBM: Virtual device operation]
- Active data is served from cache. A disk-based tape volume cache can keep recently written or frequently accessed data available for access and staging. IBM describes this arrangement as supporting backup and restore performance; actual results depend on the workload and configuration. [IBM: TS7700 product introduction]
- Data may move to a capacity tier. Depending on the system and configuration, data can migrate from cache to physical tape as cache fills, or virtual volumes can be stored in supported object storage. A VTS does not necessarily use every tier, and not every implementation supports the same destinations. [IBM: TS7700 product introduction] [IBM Redbooks: TS7700 R6.0 Cloud Storage Tier Guide]
Virtual drives, volumes, and physical media
- Virtual tape drive: A drive emulated by the VTS and presented to the host.
- Virtual volume: A tape-like volume managed within the virtualized system. It is the host-facing unit; it is not necessarily a single physical cartridge.
- Tape volume cache: The high-speed disk tier used to hold and stage virtual tape data.
- Physical tape cartridge: Optional underlying media used by configurations that migrate or retain data on tape. The system manages this storage beneath the virtual interface.
IBM’s z/OS material also identifies functions such as import and export, cache management, physical volume pooling, logical library partitioning, and selective dual copy. Which functions are available depends on the particular platform and configuration. [IBM: Virtual tape server overview]

What VTS is used for—and what it is not
A VTS is designed to preserve tape-oriented host operations while using a managed storage hierarchy. Keeping active data in disk cache and moving less-accessed data to a lower-cost tier are design aims, not guarantees of a specific speed or savings. The outcome depends on access patterns, retention and recovery requirements, cache sizing, and the configured storage tiers. IBM describes the TS7700 as an integrated disk-and-tape hierarchy. [IBM: TS7700 product introduction]
IBM TS7700 is an enterprise and mainframe example, not a general-purpose consumer tape appliance. IBM’s planning guidance is intended for system planners, programmers, and administrators. Capacity and supported options vary by model, enclosure, microcode, and enabled features; a product-family figure should not be treated as a universal VTS limit. [IBM: TS7700 planning information]

What to check when evaluating a VTS
There is no universal best VTS choice without a workload and deployment context. Before comparing systems, establish:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Whether the host and its tape software support the virtual drives and tape commands.
- Expected mount, read, and write patterns, and the cache capacity needed for active data.
- Whether the design uses disk only, physical tape, object storage, or a combination.
- Retention, restore, replication, and disaster-recovery requirements.
- Usable capacity, expected growth, volume sizes, scratch-volume demand, and return-to-scratch processing.
- Supported libraries, drives, software, firmware, geographic availability, and operational expertise.
- Total cost and administration for the specific configuration, rather than generic claims about savings.
For example, IBM’s TS7700 Release 6.1 planning page states a maximum of four million virtual volumes for that product context. This is a product-specific limit, not a general definition of VTS capacity; IBM advises planning around volume size, scratch use, and return-to-scratch processing. “Virtual tape system,” “virtual tape server,” and “virtual tape library” are sometimes used for overlapping concepts, but they are not always interchangeable product names. IBM uses VTS as a general term and also documents specific TS7700 generations and functions. Check the product and version documentation when a compatibility or capacity detail matters. IBM’s TS7700 R6.0 cloud-tier guide, published on 21 January 2026, describes configurations that store virtual tape volumes in IBM Cloud Object Storage and Amazon S3; those options are specific to supported implementations, not a feature of every VTS.
