What Is a Video Graphics Card? GPU and Graphics Card Explained

A video graphics card handles graphics processing. Learn how its GPU differs from the card itself and how discrete graphics compare with integrated graphics.

A video graphics card—more commonly called a graphics card or video card—is computer hardware that handles graphics-related processing. In a desktop PC, a discrete graphics card is a separate board with a graphics processing unit (GPU) and the supporting components needed to connect it to the system. The GPU is the processor; the graphics card is the larger board around it. In casual conversation, people often use “GPU” to mean the whole card.

What does a graphics card do?

A GPU is designed to perform many calculations in parallel, which suits tasks involving large amounts of visual data. It renders graphics and video, and can accelerate effects in games and creative applications. GPUs are also used for work beyond graphics, including scientific computing, analytics, and artificial intelligence. Intel explains the GPU’s role and terminology; NVIDIA’s CUDA Programming Guide describes parallel computing uses.

GPU versus graphics card: what is the difference?

The GPU (graphics processing unit) is a specialized processor. A discrete graphics card is a circuit board that contains a GPU along with components that support it and connect it to the computer. A desktop card plugs into the motherboard. So, technically, the GPU is one part of the card—not a synonym for the entire board—although everyday usage often blurs the terms. Intel’s GPU explainer covers the distinction.

Integrated graphics versus a discrete graphics card

Graphics processing can be built into the computer platform or provided by a separate GPU. These arrangements involve different trade-offs; the tendencies below are general, not guarantees for every computer or workload. Microsoft’s overview of GPUs describes the typical differences.

Feature Integrated graphics Discrete graphics
Physical arrangement Built into the computer platform; it is not a separate add-in card. A distinct GPU on a separate circuit board; desktop cards plug into the motherboard.
Typical workloads Often suited to lighter graphics tasks, including some gaming, light video editing, and photo work. Often suited to more demanding work, such as intensive gaming, design, and photo or video editing.
Power, size, and heat Generally more power-efficient and can help make laptops thinner and lighter. Generally larger and more power-hungry, producing more heat and often requiring dedicated cooling.

Whether integrated graphics are sufficient depends on the programs and tasks you use. A separate card is not necessary for every user.

How does a GPU work with the CPU?

The CPU (central processing unit) and GPU perform complementary jobs rather than serving as interchangeable processors. A GPU accelerates work that can be divided across many parallel calculations, while the CPU handles a different range of computing needs. As Intel’s CPU-versus-GPU explainer puts it, “The GPU evolved as a complement to its close cousin, the CPU (central processing unit).”
