A browser user agent is the software that makes a request to a website. The term also commonly refers to the identifying text a browser sends in the HTTP User-Agent header, or exposes to JavaScript as navigator.userAgent. That text can describe a browser, operating system, or platform, but it is not a reliable proof of identity or a dependable way to determine which features the browser supports.
What “user agent” means
In the broad sense, a user agent is the client software requesting a web resource. A browser is one kind of user agent; a crawler or command-line HTTP library can be one too. In everyday web development, people also use “user agent” to mean the browser’s identifying string specifically.
For an HTTP request, that string is carried in the User-Agent header. In browser JavaScript, the corresponding value is available as navigator.userAgent:
console.log(navigator.userAgent);A server can inspect the request header; code running in the page can inspect the browser property. Both are advertised values supplied by the client, not cryptographic identity statements.

What a user-agent string tells a website
A string conventionally contains a product identifier and version, and may include comments identifying a system or platform. Many real strings also contain compatibility tokens and other historical details, so they are not a clean inventory of every component involved in rendering a page.
For example, a string may combine a Mozilla/5.0 token, rendering-engine information, platform text, and browser names or versions. Such a mixture reflects compatibility conventions; it does not mean every named component is the browser actually being used. There is no one universal string that applies to all browsers and devices.
Use the value as a clue for diagnostics or coarse logging, not as proof that a request came from a particular browser, operating system, or person. Browsers and other clients can change the value, and the same browser can expose different values in different circumstances.

How to find your browser’s user agent
In the browser
- Open a page in the browser you want to inspect.
- Open its developer tools and select the Console.
- Enter
console.log(navigator.userAgent)and run it. - Read the resulting string. It is the value exposed to page JavaScript in that browser context.
The exact steps for opening developer tools vary by browser and operating system. The command reads a browser-provided value; it does not validate the browser’s identity.

In a server request
Inspect the incoming request’s User-Agent header in your server logs or request-handling code. This is the value the client sent with that request. A non-browser client may send a user-agent string too, and a client may omit or modify it.
Why browser detection by user-agent string is unreliable
A browser name or version in the string does not establish feature support. One browser may include a token associated with another for compatibility; a version-based rule can become stale as browser capabilities change; and the advertised value itself can be altered. Checking for a browser name before using a JavaScript feature can therefore reject a browser that supports it or accept one that does not.

When the real question is whether a capability exists, test that capability directly and provide a fallback where needed. This is feature detection and progressive enhancement: the code responds to what the browser can do rather than guessing from its label.

}If a browser-specific workaround is genuinely necessary, keep it narrowly tied to the known bug, document why it exists, and avoid treating the user-agent string as a capability contract.
User-agent strings, privacy, and Client Hints
Detailed browser and platform information can contribute to fingerprinting when combined with other signals. To reduce some of that detail, supporting browsers may remove or normalize information in the legacy string, including exact platform or operating-system version, device model, and minor browser version. Reduction of those fields does not make a user untrackable, nor does every browser necessarily emit the same reduced form.

For example, an illustrative Android Chrome string might replace detailed device and version information such as Android 16; Pixel 9 and 143.0.12.45 with a reduced form such as Android 10; K and 143.0.0.0. These values illustrate a reduction scheme; they are not a promise about what every current device reports.
User-Agent Client Hints provide a separate, more selective way for a server to request certain browser or platform details. A server can advertise accepted hints using Accept-CH; subsequent requests may then include headers such as Sec-CH-UA-*. In JavaScript, supporting implementations expose lower-entropy information through navigator.userAgentData and can request selected higher-entropy values with getHighEntropyValues().
Client Hints are not a universal replacement: support varies, and some values require an explicit request. The navigator.userAgentData property has limited availability and may require a secure context in supporting browsers. Check compatibility before depending on it, and avoid collecting details that your application does not need.
