What a USB thumb drive is
“USB thumb drive,” “USB flash drive,” and “pen drive” are common names for the same type of portable storage device. It holds data without needing power to preserve it, and you can connect it to a compatible host to access or move files. SanDisk describes USB flash drives and their uses.

How a thumb drive works
A typical drive contains a USB connector, a controller, NAND flash memory, and a circuit board. The connector provides the physical link to the host. The controller manages communication and directs data reads and writes; it can also handle functions such as error correction and wear leveling. NAND flash stores the files and is non-volatile, so it retains data when disconnected. The host operating system then makes the drive available for file operations.
What people use thumb drives for
- Moving files between compatible devices, including when an internet connection is unavailable.
- Carrying a backup copy of important documents or other files.
- Sharing media or coursework.
- Making bootable emergency or recovery media.
- Keeping files in encrypted or password-protected storage, when the drive and software support those features.
- Playing media in some car systems, if the vehicle supports the drive and its file formats.
Whether a particular use works depends on the host device, its software, and the drive’s format and features.

USB connector and speed: what compatibility means
Check that the drive’s connector fits the host. USB-A and USB-C are different connector shapes; an appropriate adapter may help when they do not match, but it does not make every device or feature compatible.
USB-IF lists USB 3.2 transfer-rate categories of 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 20 Gbps. Its key characteristics say that backward-compatible products “will operate at lowest common speed capability.” These are interface rates, not promises of the speed a particular drive will achieve when copying files. How to choose a thumb drive
Choose based on what you need to carry and which devices you will connect it to. SanDisk gives 64 GB, 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB as examples for collections and backups of increasing size; these are illustrative capacity suggestions, not requirements for every user. SanDisk’s USB flash drive guide provides those examples.
- Capacity: Estimate the size of the files you plan to store, leaving room for additions.
- Connector: Match the drive to the host’s USB port or check that a suitable adapter is available.
- Performance: Consider the host and workload as well as the drive’s stated interface. An interface’s headline rate alone does not establish real-world copy speed.
- Security: If files are sensitive, look for encryption or password protection and understand how that feature works before relying on it.
Limitations and safe handling
Flash memory has finite write-and-erase endurance, and a portable drive can be lost, accessed by someone else, infected by malware, or affected by data corruption. It is useful for carrying files, but it should not be the only copy of anything important. Keep a separate backup and follow the host’s instructions for safely ejecting the drive before unplugging it.
