Depending on its design and the equipment connected, it may also transfer data. The connector shape alone—especially USB-C—does not tell you a cable’s charging capacity, data speed, or support for USB Power Delivery.
What a USB charging cable does
USB was developed as a data interface with limited power and has evolved into a widely used way to power small devices, according to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). A USB charging cable makes that power connection between compatible equipment. Some cables also carry data, such as when a device connects to a computer; others are intended only for charging.

“USB charging cable” describes a use, not one particular connector or performance level. A cable must have ends that fit the connected devices, and its supported power and data capabilities must meet their requirements.

USB-C, USB Power Delivery, and data standards are different things
USB Type-C, commonly called USB-C, identifies a connector and cable system. It does not by itself specify how quickly a device will charge or how quickly data will transfer. USB-IF explicitly notes that “USB Type-C® is not USB 3.2 or USB4®” and that “USB Type-C® is not USB Power Delivery.” See its USB Type-C product and packaging guidance.

- Universal Compatibility: Designed to work flawlessly with any device that uses a USB-C port.
- Fast Sync & Charge: Supports fast charging up to 15W (3A/5V) and data transfer speeds up to 480Mbps. (Not compatible with Power Delivery).
- What You Get: 2 × Premium Nylon-Braided USB-A to USB-C Charger Cable (6ft), welcome guide, everlasting warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- USB Type-C: The connector and cable system. USB-C describes the connection format, not a guaranteed wattage or data rate.
- USB Power Delivery (USB PD): A power-delivery protocol that can negotiate power between compatible equipment. USB-IF describes it as enabling more flexible power delivery along with data over one cable in its USB Power Delivery overview.
- USB data technologies: Standards such as USB 3.2 and USB4 concern data capabilities. A cable’s connector shape does not establish which of them it supports.
So, “USB-C” does not mean “fast charging,” “USB PD,” or “USB4.” Those capabilities depend on the particular cable and the connected charger and device.
Why USB charging cables have different capabilities
USB Type-C cables are not all built for the same functions. USB-IF distinguishes full-featured Type-C cables from USB 2.0 Type-C cables, among other cable forms. Their data support can differ, even when the connector ends look alike. A cable may also be designed for charging only or for both charging and data.

Power ratings differ too. USB-IF says USB PD Revision 3.1, announced in 2021, enables up to 240 W with compatible full-featured USB Type-C cable and connector implementations. That is a specification capability—not a rating shared by every USB-C cable. USB-IF describes the previous USB PD limit as up to 100 W. Its overview associates fixed voltage levels of 28 V, 36 V, and 48 V with power levels up to 140 W, 180 W, and 240 W, respectively. These figures describe compatible implementations; they do not establish what an unmarked cable or a particular device will support.

What to check when choosing a cable
Match the cable to the job rather than relying on its connector shape or a generic “fast charging” label. Check:
- Connector ends: Confirm that each end fits the device and power source you intend to connect.
- Power rating and protocol: Look for the cable’s stated power capability and USB PD support if your charger and device require it. The charger, cable, and device must all support a compatible charging arrangement.
- Data needs: If you will transfer files or connect peripherals, check the cable’s stated data standard and speed. Do not assume every charging cable supports data, or that all data-capable cables offer the same performance.
- Device requirements: Check the device and charger documentation for the connector, power, and data capabilities they need. A USB-C connector alone cannot confirm compatibility or charging speed.
The USB-IF’s USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification, Release 2.0 lists cable forms including full-featured Type-C, USB 2.0 Type-C, captive, and active cables. It is a 2019 release, so the Document Library is the place to check for later specification releases.
