A Trusted Platform Module (TPM) is a hardware security component that performs cryptographic operations and protects keys and other small amounts of sensitive information. It can also record measurements of a computer’s startup process, allowing some protected keys to be used only when the platform starts in an expected state. TPM functionality may come from a separate motherboard chip or be integrated into a processor or platform.
What does “Trusted Platform Module” mean?
The term refers to a device that implements capabilities defined by the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) TPM specification. NIST defines a TPM as “A tamper-resistant integrated circuit built into some computer motherboards that can perform cryptographic operations (including key generation) and protect small amounts of sensitive information, such as passwords and cryptographic keys.” The NIST glossary attributes this definition to SP 800-147 and SP 800-147B. In practical terms, a TPM is a protected place for certain security operations and data. It is not a general-purpose storage drive: it protects keys and other small pieces of sensitive information, and can perform cryptographic operations such as generating or using keys. The TCG maintains the TPM specifications; its TPM 2.0 Library describes core capabilities and commands used as a basis for platform-specific specifications. TCG TPM 2.0 Library

It protects cryptographic keys
A TPM can create and use cryptographic keys. Some keys can be configured so they cannot be exported from the TPM, which helps keep them protected while they are used for tasks such as authentication or encryption. Windows security features including BitLocker and Windows Hello can use TPM functionality. Microsoft: TPM technology overview

It can record how startup proceeds
During startup, firmware and operating-system boot code can be measured and those measurements recorded in the TPM. The resulting evidence can help establish whether the system started in an expected software state. A platform can use that information to restrict access to TPM-protected keys unless startup conditions meet defined expectations. This process is often described as measured boot. It is one part of platform security
A TPM by itself does not prove that a computer is secure, prevent every attack, or detect all malware. Its value depends on how the hardware, firmware, operating system, and security features are integrated and configured. Microsoft notes that reliable measurement and reporting require close integration between the TPM and the platform. Microsoft: TPM recommendations

- 【Platform Limits – No Laptops】 Optimized for Desktop motherboards from the DDR4 era (X99 series and newer). Not compatible with laptops or legacy DDR3 systems. Please verify your motherboard's header layout (2x10 pins) before ordering.
- 【Easy Setup & BIOS Note】 Simple plug-and-play installation takes only minutes with no tools required. IMPORTANT: After installation, you MUST enable "Security Device Support" or "Intel PTT / AMD fTPM" in your BIOS settings for Windows to recognize the module.
Where is a TPM found?
A TPM can be a discrete chip on a motherboard or an integrated security function within a processor or platform. Microsoft identifies Pluton as an integrated security processor that embeds TPM functionality. TPMs are also used in devices beyond desktop PCs, including tablets and phones. Microsoft Support: What’s a TPM?
Because TPM capability may already be built into a computer, buying a separate TPM module is not automatically necessary. A plug-in module only works when the exact motherboard supports that type of module and connector; check the board’s documentation before purchasing one. Microsoft: TPM recommendations

What is the difference between TPM 1.2 and TPM 2.0?
TPM 2.0 offers greater flexibility in cryptographic algorithms than TPM 1.2. Microsoft contrasts TPM 1.2’s support for RSA and SHA-1 with TPM 2.0’s broader algorithm flexibility. The algorithms available still vary by TPM implementation, so the version number alone does not establish which algorithms a particular device supports. Microsoft: TPM recommendations
The TCG publishes and maintains the TPM specification. Its TPM 2.0 Library resource page lists Version 185, dated March 2026, with separate parts addressing the introduction, architecture, structures, and commands. TCG identifies ISO/IEC 11889:2015 as the ISO/IEC publication of the TPM 2.0 specification. TCG TPM 2.0 Library ISO’s catalog page for an earlier 2009 Part 2 edition notes that a newer 2015 version exists; that 2009 edition should not be treated as the latest. What does a TPM do in Windows?
Windows can use TPM capabilities for security features such as BitLocker drive encryption and Windows Hello. TPMs may also support authentication credentials, certificate keys, measured boot, and device-health evaluation. Windows 10 and Windows 11 generally initialize and take ownership of the TPM automatically, so most users do not need to configure it manually. Microsoft Support: What’s a TPM?

- Version and algorithms: Check whether the platform provides TPM 2.0 and whether its implementation supports the algorithms your use case requires.
- Integrated or discrete implementation: Determine whether TPM functionality is built into the processor or platform, or supplied by a separate motherboard chip.
- Exact hardware compatibility: If adding a module, confirm the motherboard model, connector, and supported module in the manufacturer’s documentation.
- Security requirements: Implementation security properties and customer or regulatory requirements can differ. Verify that the TPM and its platform meet the relevant requirements.
- Intended use: Identify which feature—such as Windows Hello, BitLocker, measured boot, or certificate-key protection—needs TPM support, then check the platform’s documentation for that feature.
TPM presence and capabilities are platform-dependent; the specification defines a foundation, while manufacturers determine how it is implemented in a particular device. Microsoft: TPM recommendations
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Independent TPM Processor: The remote card encryption security module uses an independent TPM encryption processor, which is a daughter board connected to the main board.
- High Security: The TPM securely stores an encryption key that can be created using encryption software, without which the content on the user's PC remains encrypted and protected from unauthorized access.
- PC Architecture: TPM module system components adopts a standard PC architecture and reserves a certain amount of memory for the system, so the actual memory size will be smaller than the specified amount.
- Scope of Application: TPM modules are suitable for GIGABYTE for 11 motherboards. Some motherboards require a TPM module inserted or an update to the latest BIOS to enable the TPM option.
