What Is a True Native App? Native vs. Web and Hybrid Apps

“Native app” can mean software built for a target platform or, in RFC 8252, an app installed on a device. The distinction depends on context.

A “true native app” has no single universal definition. In broad technical usage, a native app is built or compiled for a target platform. In OAuth standard RFC 8252, “native app” instead means an app installed on a user’s device, as distinct from a web app that runs only in a browser. Those definitions answer different questions, so whether an app is “native” depends on the context.

What does “native app” mean?

In general software terminology, native software is built or compiled for the hardware and software environment it targets. This describes how software relates to a platform; it is not a universal certification test for deciding whether every app is native.

RFC 8252 uses the term for a specific purpose: OAuth authorization. It defines a native app as “an app or application that is installed by the user to their device, as distinct from a web app that runs in the browser context only.” In that standard, installation and the distinction from a browser-only app are central.

These meanings overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A discussion about platform-specific implementation may use “native” differently from a discussion applying RFC 8252.

How does a native app differ from a web app?

Type Where it runs or how it is delivered What the label does not establish
Native app, broad technical usage Built or compiled for a target hardware and software environment. The label alone does not specify how much of its interface or content uses web technologies.
Native app, RFC 8252 usage Installed by the user on a device. For this OAuth definition, an installed app can use web technologies; “native” does not mean every screen is implemented with platform-native interface components.
Browser-only web app Runs in the browser context and does not require installation as a device app. It may still be designed to look and behave like an app.
Hybrid app or app with embedded web content Installed and able to combine platform code with web-rendered content. “Hybrid” does not have one universal boundary, and the term’s meaning depends on whether the discussion concerns implementation or a specific standard.

RFC 8252 explicitly treats apps implemented with web-based technology but distributed as native apps as native for that specification. That is a standards-specific choice, not a claim that every engineering discussion must classify hybrid apps the same way.

Can an installed app contain web content?

Yes. Installation describes how an app is delivered, not necessarily how every part of it is implemented. Android provides WebView for displaying web content inside an app, and Custom Tabs for opening web content in a browser-powered interface. An installed app can therefore combine platform code and web-rendered experiences.

Likewise, appearance alone is not a reliable test. Apple’s archived Safari guidance describes how a web application saved to an iOS Home Screen can be configured to look and behave similarly to a native app. An app-like interface does not prove that the software was built with native platform components.

Can a native app and a website work together?

Yes. Apple’s associated-domains feature can connect a website with its app, allowing related links or experiences to work across them. A website can remain available to people who do not have the app, so native and browser-based access are not mutually exclusive.

How should you judge whether an app is “truly native”?

First decide what you need to know. If the question is whether users must install software, distinguish an installed app from an experience that runs only in the browser. If the question is about engineering implementation, ask which parts are built with platform-native code or interface components and which are rendered as web content.

  • Execution and installation: Does the experience run only in a browser, or is an app installed on the device?
  • Interface implementation: Are screens rendered with platform-native components, web content, or a mixture?
  • Platform features: Which device or operating-system capabilities does the product need? The word “native” by itself does not answer this.
  • Distribution and maintenance: How will the product reach users and be updated? These are practical product questions, not properties guaranteed by the label.

There is no evidence-based reason to treat “native” as an automatic synonym for faster, safer, or better. Those outcomes depend on the particular implementation and use case; the definitions above do not establish a performance or security comparison.
