Your devices connect to the travel router instead of joining each public network individually. The router manages the connection; it does not create internet access on its own.
What a travel router does
Think of a travel router as your own small local router on the road. It connects to an upstream source of internet, then provides a network for your phone, laptop, tablet and other devices. Depending on the model, the upstream can be hotel or café Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection, USB tethering from a phone, or a compatible cellular modem. The available options vary by model; for example, the GL.iNet Beryl (GL-MT1300) guide documents those connection types for that device.

Because your devices join the travel router’s network, they can keep using the same local Wi-Fi name and password as the upstream connection changes. When the router uses Wi-Fi as its source, this is commonly called repeater mode. GL.iNet describes its documented default WISP mode as creating a separate subnet and a firewall between the public network and local devices; routing and firewall behavior are not identical on every travel router. See the GL.iNet repeater documentation.

How a travel router works
- Choose an internet source. Join an existing Wi-Fi network in repeater mode, connect an Ethernet cable, or tether a phone by USB if the router supports it. Cellular modem support is another model-dependent option.
- Sign in if the network requires it. Hotels and other public hotspots may use a captive portal: a web page where you accept terms, enter a room number or otherwise authenticate before internet access is allowed.
- Connect your devices to the travel router. Your devices use its local Wi-Fi rather than joining the hotel or café network separately. The router may appear to the hotspot as one connected client while sharing the connection locally, but hotel policies and device limits still apply.
- Configure optional routing features. Some models can route connected-device traffic through a configured VPN. A VPN does not provide the upstream internet connection: it requires a working connection and a compatible setup.
Using one with hotel Wi-Fi
First connect the router to the hotel’s Wi-Fi using its repeater or hotspot mode, following the model’s setup instructions. Then connect your devices to the router’s own Wi-Fi. If a sign-in page appears, complete the hotel’s authentication before expecting normal internet access.

A captive portal can complicate setup. GL.iNet’s support guide, updated August 24, 2026, explains portal sign-in and troubleshooting for its routers, including checking DNS or VPN settings, trying login mode, cloning a device’s MAC address, or asking hotel staff to whitelist the router. These are possible remedies, not a guarantee: compatibility depends on the router, its firmware and the hotspot’s rules. Strict verification can prevent a connection. Read the captive-portal guide for the relevant model before relying on a workaround.
Settings intended to help with public-hotspot login can have trade-offs. GL.iNet warns that its login mode switches DNS to automatic and may expose network activity to the hotspot provider; it should not be treated as a security upgrade. Follow your router manufacturer’s instructions and the hotel’s terms rather than assuming a router bypasses network restrictions.

What it can—and cannot—solve
- Several devices: A travel router gives your devices one local network to join, which can be simpler than signing each one into a public hotspot. It may help where the hotspot limits individual client devices, but neither the router nor a shared connection overrides hotel rules or guarantees acceptance.
- Internet access: The router needs a usable upstream connection, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet, a tethered phone with service, or a compatible cellular connection. Without one, it can provide a local network but not internet access.
- Speed: Repeating Wi-Fi does not guarantee faster internet than connecting directly to the hotel network. Results depend on the upstream connection and conditions; the available documentation does not establish a universal speed advantage.
- VPN coverage: On supported models, a configured router-level VPN can route connected devices through that VPN. Verify that the router supports the protocol and configuration you need.
How to choose a travel router
Start with where your internet will come from and what you need to connect. Compare model specifications and documentation rather than choosing by a peak speed claim alone.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Upstream connection options | Confirm support for the source you plan to use: Wi-Fi repeater, Ethernet, USB phone tethering, cellular modem or built-in cellular connectivity. These options vary by model. |
| Wi-Fi standard and bands | Match the supported generation and bands to your devices and expected use. A manufacturer’s lineup includes Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 examples, but that is not an independent performance ranking; see its travel-router listings. |
| Ports and power | Check the exact number and type of Ethernet ports, power input and whether a compatible USB-C charger or power bank can power the model. |
| Phone or modem compatibility | Verify USB tethering support, modem compatibility and, for cellular equipment, supported bands and geographic availability. |
| Captive-portal handling | Look for model-specific hotspot instructions and troubleshooting, while allowing for networks that do not accept the router or its sign-in method. |
| VPN support | Check supported protocols and whether your VPN provider’s configuration works on the router; VPN support is model-specific. |
For a current product example, GL.iNet’s travel-router page lists models across multiple Wi-Fi generations. Treat vendor listings and specifications as product information, not an independent comparison of real-world performance.
