A top-level domain (TLD) is the final part of a domain name, after the last dot. In icann.org, for example, .org is the TLD. TLDs sit at the top of the Domain Name System’s naming hierarchy, and they include familiar generic extensions such as .com as well as country-code extensions such as .uk.
How a domain name is structured
Read a domain from right to left to identify its levels. In events.icann.org, .org is the TLD, icann is the second-level domain, and events is a subdomain, also called a third-level domain. The second-level domain is the label immediately to the left of the TLD; a subdomain is an additional label placed before it. ICANN’s FAQ explains these domain-name levels.

What the main TLD categories mean
Generic top-level domains
Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) include extensions such as .com, .net, and .org, along with newer extensions. ICANN describes a gTLD as an Internet extension—the characters that come after the dot in a domain name. The ICANN New gTLD Program provides this definition.

Country-code top-level domains
Country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are associated with countries or territories. Examples include .uk, .br, and .cn. Their category identifies their association; it does not, by itself, explain every registration rule or restriction for an individual extension. ICANN lists the categories and examples in its FAQ.

Who controls an extension, and what does a registry do?
The DNS root-zone authorities control which TLDs are recognized in the DNS. For each TLD, a registry operator manages the registry database, including nameserver information for registered names. That registry role is distinct from the role of someone who registers a domain name under an existing extension. ICANN’s FAQ describes TLDs and registry operators.
Registering a domain is not the same as creating a TLD
Registering a name under an existing extension
If you want a domain such as example.com, you are seeking to register a name under an extension that already exists. A registrar is the relevant service for this task. The availability and registration conditions of a particular name depend on the extension and the registrar.

Applying to operate a new extension
Seeking a new gTLD is a different undertaking: the applicant seeks to operate an Internet registry business that supports the DNS, rather than simply register a domain for a website. ICANN distinguishes domain registration from applying to operate a gTLD registry.
How new extensions enter the DNS
New extensions are not created simply by choosing a string and using it in a website address. ICANN runs application rounds for proposed gTLDs, and publication of applications is not the same as approval or delegation of every requested string.

The 2026 application round
ICANN’s 2026 New gTLD Program application window ran from 30 April through 12 August 2026. On 7 October 2026, ICANN announced that it had published the applications for that round, including the applied-for strings, applicant entities, and preliminary contention sets. That publication milestone does not mean every proposed extension has been approved or added to the DNS. ICANN’s New gTLD Program page provides program information. ICANN’s 7 October 2026 announcement describes the publication.
What happened in the 2012 program
ICANN reports that more than 1,200 new unique names were added through the 2012 New gTLD Program. Its examples include .futbol and .pizza, as well as extensions in other alphabets and languages. This is a historical figure for that program, not a current count of all TLDs. ICANN’s program overview provides the historical figure and examples.

How to think about choosing an extension
There is no evidence here that one extension is universally best for traffic, trust, search performance, or business results. Instead, consider what the extension is, who operates its registry, and what it communicates to the audience you intend to reach. Also distinguish your goal: registering a name under an existing extension is a different decision from seeking to operate a registry for a new one.
