A thermal dye printer is a photo printer that uses a heated printhead to transfer dye from a color ribbon onto specially coated paper. The process—often called dye-sublimation thermal transfer or D2T2—uses controlled heat to produce different amounts of dye and smooth color gradations. It is not the same as a direct-thermal receipt printer, which darkens heat-sensitive paper without a ribbon.
How a thermal dye printer works
The printer feeds a dedicated color ribbon and coated receiver paper through the print mechanism. A ribbon commonly has cyan, magenta and yellow dye panels, along with a protective overcoat, on a film; the paper is designed to work with that printer and ribbon. As the paper and ribbon pass the thermal printhead, the head applies controlled heat. Adjusting the heat changes how much dye transfers, allowing the printer to create tones and color gradations. Canon likewise describes dye-sublimation as a type of thermal-transfer printing in its support explanation: the head heats a color ink sheet, transferring dye to specially coated paper.

The printer does not use ordinary loose ink cartridges to print on arbitrary paper.

How it differs from other thermal printing

Direct thermal and thermal transfer are useful broad categories, but neither term alone means dye-sublimation photo printing. Canon’s description of dye-sublimation as “a thermal transfer type of printer” is accurate at that broader level; the matched color ribbon and coated photo paper distinguish the photo process.
What to check when choosing a printer
Consumables and supported print formats vary by model. Before buying, confirm the printer’s supported sizes and finishes and the exact compatible ribbon-and-paper kit. For higher-volume or event use, compare print speed and supply yield as well as intended print volume; a kit for one model should not be assumed to fit another.

For example, Fujifilm lists its ASK-400 as supporting formats from 3.5 × 5 inches through 6 × 8 inches, with glossy and matte finishes and model-specific ribbon yields in its specifications. Fujifilm also states a printer life of 200,000 standard 4 × 6-inch prints; that is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified longevity test. Model availability and configurations can vary by market, so check the local manufacturer listing before purchase. DNP lists models including DS620, DS820, DS-RX1HS and QW410 on its printer page. Its DP-RX2 is described as coming in 2027, with launch timing potentially varying by country, so it should not be treated as currently available.
