A text entry box is an on-screen control where you type text for an app or form to use. It might collect a name, accept a search term, or let a learner enter an answer. Depending on the software, you may also see it called a text field, text box, input field, or input box.
What a text entry box does
The box is the interface control—not the text you type into it. It gives you a place to enter information that the software can receive, process, save, or check. Its purpose depends on the application: a form might request contact details, a learning activity might collect an answer, and a game might use it for a search or command.

Names are not consistent across products. “Text entry box,” “text field,” “text box,” and “input field” often refer to similar controls in everyday use, but a product may use a more specific term for a particular kind of input.

These categories describe common uses, not a guarantee that every product implements a control the same way. For example, Core Games documents a multiline property for its UI Text Entry Box, while web forms can use a dedicated email input type.

How text entry boxes are used
Forms and search
A form can use separate fields for details such as a name or email address. A search box accepts a query that the application can use to find information. In either case, the control tells the software where the user’s typed input belongs.
Learning software
Adobe Captivate Classic describes text entry boxes that let learners type responses to knowledge questions. The author can configure answers for comparison with the learner’s entry. See Adobe’s text entry box guidance for Captivate Classic.

Games and interactive apps
Core Games documents uses such as naming an item, searching an inventory, entering a text-adventure command, or using a command panel. Its control can show prompt text when empty and respond to text changes. In single-line mode, its documented commit behavior occurs when the user presses Enter or moves focus away. A text entry box accepts typed text. An HTML range input is designed for choosing an approximate numeric value using a slider or dial, rather than entering arbitrary text. For example, a field can accept a search word, while a range control can select an approximate level. The right control depends on whether users need to type a value or choose one along a range. Labels and placeholder text in web forms
When building a web form, identify each field with a label so users can tell what information to enter. Placeholder text can show an example while the field is empty, but it should not be the only indication of the field’s purpose: the example disappears when the user starts typing. MDN’s email-input documentation also describes display width and minimum and maximum entry lengths as relevant attributes for that input type. See MDN’s email input documentation.

Product terminology and behavior vary. A “text box” may mean an editable field in one application, while in another context a control with a similar name may simply display text. Check the product’s documentation or the surrounding interface to determine whether the control accepts typing and what kind of entry it expects.
