A subglacial lake is a body of liquid water trapped at the bottom of a glacier or ice sheet, between the moving ice and the rock or sediment beneath it. It is hidden under hundreds or thousands of metres of ice, so scientists usually do not observe the water directly. Instead, they combine radar, satellite measurements of the ice surface and seismic reflections to infer where water is, map its shape, detect filling or drainage, and measure its depth. Drilling can provide water, sediment or camera observations, but it is difficult, expensive and planned only after geophysical surveys identify a suitable target.
What makes a subglacial lake different from a surface lake?
The defining feature is location: a subglacial lake lies at the ice-bed interface, not on top of the ice. Meltwater produced at the base of an ice sheet can collect in depressions in the bedrock or in sediment, forming a lake beneath the moving ice. Water may also move between separated lakes through channels and over uneven terrain.

Pressure from the overlying ice helps keep the water liquid, while geothermal heat and frictional melting can supply additional energy. The water is part of a connected drainage system rather than an isolated pond in every case. Some lakes appear relatively stable; others fill and drain, changing the pressure at the bed and potentially influencing how quickly the ice slides.
A surface melt lake is a different phenomenon. Surface lakes are visible or detectable from optical and radar imagery on top of the ice. A subglacial lake must be inferred from signals that pass through, reflect from or respond to the ice above it. The two types should not be treated as interchangeable.

How can scientists detect water beneath kilometres of ice?
Radar and radio-echo sounding locate candidate lakes
Ice-penetrating radar sends electromagnetic pulses into the ice and records echoes from boundaries below. A strong, relatively smooth basal reflection can indicate a water-covered interface because liquid water reflects radar energy differently from dry rock or rough sediment. Aircraft, sleds or ground teams can collect profiles across an area and combine them into maps of the bed.
Radar and radio-echo sounding are especially useful for finding candidate lakes and outlining their extent. They reveal the character of the basal interface, not a camera view of the water. Echo strength depends on the ice, the bed material, the instrument frequency, surface conditions and how the data are processed. A bright reflector therefore requires interpretation and, where possible, confirmation with another method. Radar alone does not normally provide a complete measurement of water-column depth.
Satellite altimetry detects the surface response to filling and drainage
When a subglacial lake gains or loses water, the ice above it can rise, sink or change slope. Satellite laser or radar altimeters repeatedly measure the elevation of the ice surface. A pattern of elevation change over time can reveal that water is moving below, even though the instrument never sees through the ice.

NASA’s account of Antarctic measurements describes combining observations from the original ICESat mission and the European Space Agency’s CryoSat-2, and explains how ICESat-2 can detect these changes with laser altimetry. Glaciologist Helen Amanda Fricker of Scripps Institution of Oceanography summarized the logic in NASA’s report: “If there are lakes filling and draining, we will detect them with ICESat-2.” The measurement is indirect: the satellite records the changing surface shape, not the water itself.
Repeated altimetry is therefore most informative for active lakes. It can estimate the timing, area and relative magnitude of a surface response, while radar or seismic work is needed to characterize the basal structure that produced it.
Seismic reflection confirms a water column and measures depth
Seismic surveys send controlled vibrations into the ice and record the echoes that return from subsurface boundaries. A lake can produce a reflection from its upper boundary and another from the lake bottom. The time difference between those echoes, after accounting for seismic velocities, gives the water-column depth along the survey line.

The British Antarctic Survey describes seismic work as a way to establish both the presence of a lake and its depth. Because the method is field-based and targeted, teams can place profiles across radar-defined targets and test whether the basal reflector is consistent with liquid water. Seismic data can also show whether the floor is uneven and help estimate a lake’s volume when combined with a mapped outline.

Drilling is the most direct way to study a subglacial lake. A borehole can permit water sampling, sediment coring or deployment of cameras and other instruments. It is also the most technically demanding approach: teams must penetrate the ice, maintain a stable hole, manage contamination risks and operate safely in a remote environment.
British Antarctic Survey work at Lake Hodgson near the retreating margin of the Antarctic Peninsula included clean drilling and sediment coring. NASA’s account of the WISSARD project describes a camera-bearing mini-submarine lowered through an approximately 800-metre borehole to explore Lake Whillans. These projects demonstrate what direct access can achieve, but they are specific expeditions rather than routine procedures for every lake. Deep interior targets are substantially harder to reach than lakes near an accessible margin.

What each method can and cannot answer
| Method | Main question answered | How direct is the observation? | Typical strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radar or radio-echo sounding | Where are basal lake candidates and other interfaces? | Remote inference through the ice | Profiles large areas and helps map outlines | Interpretation-dependent; a radar reflector is not a direct view or a full depth measurement |
| Satellite laser or radar altimetry | Is the ice surface changing as water fills or drains? | Remote and indirect | Repeatable monitoring over time and wide regions | Measures the surface response, not the lake’s water or floor |
| Seismic reflection | Is a water column present, and how deep is it? | Field-based geophysical measurement | Echoes from the top and bottom can resolve bathymetry along survey lines | Targeted coverage is costly and does not automatically map the entire lake |
| Drilling and in-lake instruments | What are the water, sediment and biological conditions? | Direct access | Allows samples, cores and camera observations | Technically difficult, expensive and dependent on careful site selection and environmental controls |
How a subglacial-lake investigation usually proceeds
Scientists normally build evidence in stages rather than relying on one spectacular measurement. A practical sequence is:
- Map the ice and bed. Radar or radio-echo sounding identifies unusual basal reflectors and provides an initial outline of a possible lake.
- Check the surface for motion. Satellite altimetry and other repeat elevation measurements test whether the ice above the target rises or falls in a pattern consistent with filling or drainage.
- Plan targeted field surveys. Teams select safe flight paths, traverses or seismic lines using the preliminary radar and satellite results.
- Test for a water column. Seismic reflection profiles look for separate echoes from the lake roof and floor and estimate depth from their timing.
- Combine geometry and volume estimates. The mapped footprint, seismic depth and ice-bed elevation are integrated to estimate the lake’s shape and volume, with uncertainty reported for each result.
- Decide whether direct access is justified. Drilling is considered only when the scientific objective, logistics and environmental safeguards support it. Prior geophysical characterization helps avoid an unsuccessful or unnecessarily disruptive borehole.
- Monitor the system. Repeat radar, altimetry or other observations can show whether the lake is stable, filling, draining or connected to neighbouring drainage pathways.
At each stage, “candidate,” “confirmed” and “sampled” mean different things. A radar target may be a strong hypothesis; seismic boundaries can provide confirmation and depth; a borehole is required for direct water or sediment observations.

A measured example: Subglacial Lake CECs in West Antarctica
Subglacial Lake CECs illustrates how methods are combined. The British Antarctic Survey and the NERC EDS UK Polar Data Centre report seismic reflection profiles collected in 2016 and 2022. Those surveys produced a maximum water depth of 301.3 ± 1.5 metres and an estimated volume of 2.5 ± 0.3 cubic kilometres. Both figures are specific to Lake CECs and to that data record; the uncertainty is part of the measurement, not an optional rounding detail.
Best Value
The example also shows why a footprint and a depth should not be conflated. Radar can help identify and outline a basal lake, while seismic echoes supply water-column thickness along measured profiles. The volume estimate depends on combining those observations and therefore carries its own uncertainty.
Why hidden lakes matter to ice-sheet science
Subglacial lakes are components of the water system beneath an ice sheet. NASA’s Sea Level Change Portal describes water moving among lakes and channels and links that drainage to ice-sheet evolution and the flow of ice toward the ocean. Water at the bed can reduce friction in some settings, alter basal pressure and redirect drainage; the effect depends on the local bed, water routing and ice dynamics. No single lake should be treated as a model for every region.
The same NASA overview gives an estimate of about 65 gigatons of basal meltwater per year, with much of that water deposited in subglacial lakes. This is an estimate for the basal meltwater system described in the overview, not a measured annual input for an individual lake. NASA’s ICESat-2 reporting also notes that changes in subglacial water storage are relevant to the speed of ice flowing toward the Southern Ocean.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For sea-level studies, the important issue is not simply whether a lake exists. Scientists need to know how water is produced, stored, transferred and released, and how those changes interact with ice motion. That is why repeated remote sensing and targeted geophysics are more useful than a one-time map alone.
What the measurements still leave uncertain
- Detection is not a global census. Radar coverage, instrument sensitivity and interpretation vary by region. There is no definitive current worldwide count established by the cited sources.
- Surface change has multiple causes. An elevation anomaly can reflect subglacial water movement, ice dynamics, snowfall, firn compaction or measurement noise. Time series and supporting observations help separate these effects.
- Radar brightness is not automatically proof. Basal materials and water conditions can produce different reflection strengths, so confirmation matters.
- Seismic profiles sample lines, not every square metre. Depth between lines must be modelled or interpolated, and the resulting volume retains uncertainty.
- Remote instruments do not reveal chemistry or biology. Questions about sediments, microbes, dissolved substances or direct habitats require samples or in-lake instruments.
- Antarctic examples have geographic limits. Results from West Antarctica or the Antarctic Peninsula cannot automatically be generalized to Greenland or every glacier system.
How to read a claim about a “discovered” subglacial lake
Look for the evidence level behind the headline. “Detected by radar” usually means a basal feature is consistent with liquid water. “Active lake” generally refers to a surface-elevation time series showing filling or drainage. “Confirmed and measured” should identify seismic or equivalent geophysical evidence for a water column and state the uncertainty. “Sampled” means a project achieved direct access through a borehole; it is a much rarer claim.
A careful report should also state the region, survey dates, instrument type and whether a quoted depth or volume is a maximum, an average or an estimate. Those details determine what can legitimately be concluded from an unseen lake.
