A subdomain is a separate section of a website that sits in front of the main domain, such as blog.example.com or shop.example.com. It helps organize content, tools, apps, regions, or business units under the same overall brand while still giving each area its own structure and settings.
Subdomains are often confused with root domains and subdirectories, but the differences matter. Choosing between support.example.com and example.com/support can affect how your site is managed, how search engines understand it, how analytics are tracked, and how security rules are applied.

Used well, subdomains can make a website cleaner, more scalable, and easier to maintain. Used poorly, they can create unnecessary complexity, split SEO signals, or make reporting harder, so it helps to understand when they make sense and what to consider before creating one.
What Is a Subdomain?
A subdomain is an additional section of a domain name that sits before the main domain and helps organize a website into distinct areas. In the URL blog.example.com, blog is the subdomain, example is the domain name, and .com is the top-level domain. Together, they form a complete web address that can point visitors to a specific part of a website or to a separate web service.

Subdomains are commonly used when a website owner wants to separate content, tools, regions, or services without buying a completely new domain. For example, a company might use shop.example.com for its online store, support.example.com for help documentation, and app.example.com for a logged-in software product. Each subdomain can have its own design, content management system, hosting environment, tracking setup, and access rules while still remaining connected to the main brand.
A subdomain is part of the larger Domain Name System, or DNS, which translates human-readable web addresses into server locations. When someone types a subdomain into a browser, DNS records tell the browser where that subdomain should go. This means www.example.com and careers.example.com can point to the same server, different servers, or entirely different platforms depending on how the DNS is configured.
Simple examples of subdomains
- www.example.com: often used for the main public website.
- blog.example.com: often used for articles, news, or educational content.
- store.example.com: often used for ecommerce pages or a separate shopping platform.
- support.example.com: often used for help centers, documentation, or ticket portals.
- uk.example.com: often used for a country-specific version of a website.
It helps to think of a domain as a property address and subdomains as separate buildings or departments at that address. They share the same parent identity, but each one can serve a different purpose. This structure can make websites easier to manage as they grow, especially when different teams are responsible for different parts of the online experience.

Subdomains are not the same as subdirectories. A subdirectory appears after the domain, such as example.com/blog, while a subdomain appears before it, such as blog.example.com. That difference may look small, but it can affect hosting, analytics, cookies, search engine signals, security settings, and how users perceive the relationship between different parts of a site.
How Subdomains Work in a URL
A subdomain appears at the beginning of a web address, before the main domain name. In the URL https://blog.example.com/articles/, the subdomain is blog, the root domain is example.com, and /articles/ is the path to a specific section or page. This structure helps browsers, DNS providers, web servers, and analytics tools understand where a request should go.
A full URL can include several parts, but the most relevant pieces for understanding subdomains are the protocol, subdomain, root domain, top-level domain, and path. Here is how those pieces fit together:
| URL part | Example | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | https:// | Tells the browser how to connect to the site, usually through an encrypted HTTPS connection. |
| Subdomain | blog | Identifies a separate area or service under the main domain. |
| Root domain | example | The main registered name owned by the website or organization. |
| Top-level domain | .com | The domain extension, such as .com, .org, .net, or a country code like .co.uk. |
| Path | /articles/ | Points to a page, folder, or resource within that site area. |
When someone visits a subdomain, the browser asks the Domain Name System, or DNS, where that subdomain should send traffic. The DNS record might point blog.example.com to one web server, shop.example.com to an ecommerce platform, and support.example.com to a help desk tool. All three can belong to the same company while running on different systems, with different hosting providers, software, or deployment processes.
Examples of subdomains in real URLs
- blog.example.com could host articles, guides, and company updates.
- shop.example.com could run an online store separate from the marketing website.
- app.example.com could provide access to a logged-in software product.
- support.example.com could point to a knowledge base or ticketing portal.
- uk.example.com could serve a regional version of the site for visitors in the United Kingdom.
Subdomains can also have mulle levels. For example, status.api.example.com uses status.api as a nested subdomain structure under example.com. This can be useful for large technical systems, but it can also become harder to manage if naming is not consistent. For most public websites, simple and descriptive subdomains such as blog, help, store, or app are easier for users to recognize and for teams to maintain.

Subdomain vs. Domain vs. Subdirectory
A domain, subdomain, and subdirectory can all point visitors to different parts of a website, but they sit in different places in a URL and are managed in different ways. The root domain is the main address you register, such as example.com. A subdomain adds a prefix before that root domain, such as blog.example.com or shop.example.com. A subdirectory, also called a subfolder, comes after the domain, such as example.com/blog or example.com/shop.
The simplest way to compare them is to think of a root domain as the main property, subdomains as separate buildings on that property, and subdirectories as rooms inside the main building. A root domain usually represents the primary brand or website. A subdomain can run a distinct section with its own hosting, CMS, design, or technical stack. A subdirectory usually belongs to the same site structure and often shares the same navigation, templates, analytics setup, and server configuration.
| Structure | Example | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Root domain | example.com | Main website, company homepage, primary brand presence |
| Subdomain | support.example.com | Help center, app login, store, regional site, separate product area |
| Subdirectory | example.com/support | Blog, resource center, service pages, documentation within the main site |
From a technical perspective, a subdomain is configured through DNS records. For example, app.example.com might point to a SaaS application hosted on a different platform, while www.example.com points to the marketing website. This makes subdomains useful when a section needs separate infrastructure, independent deployments, or different software. A subdirectory is usually handled by the same web server or content management system as the root domain, although reverse proxies and modern hosting setups can make this more flexible.
The choice also affects how users and search engines interpret your site. A subdirectory often feels like part of one unified website: example.com/pricing, example.com/blog, and example.com/contact all look closely connected. A subdomain can signal separation: careers.example.com may feel like a dedicated hiring portal, while developers.example.com may suggest a specialized technical hub. This separation can help with branding and operations, but it may require extra attention to internal linking, analytics tracking, search performance, and security settings.
- Use a root domain for the main public identity of a brand, organization, product, or project.
- Use a subdomain when a section needs technical independence, a distinct audience, separate hosting, or a different platform.
- Use a subdirectory when content belongs closely to the main site and should share its structure, authority signals, and user experience.
For many websites, subdirectories are the default choice for closely related content such as blogs, case studies, features, and landing pages. Subdomains are better suited for areas that function more independently, such as customer dashboards, help centers, documentation portals, ecommerce stores, staging environments, or country-specific experiences. The best structure depends on how separate the content really is, how it will be maintained, and whether users should experience it as part of the main site or as its own destination.
Common Reasons to Use a Subdomain
A subdomain is useful when a part of your website has a distinct purpose, audience, technology stack, or operating model. Instead of placing everything under the main website, you can separate specific areas while still keeping them connected to the same root domain. For example, a company using example.com for its main marketing site might use shop.example.com for ecommerce, support.example.com for customer help, and developers.example.com for API documentation.
One of the most common uses is separating a blog, help center, or knowledge base from the main site. This can make sense when the content is managed by a different team, runs on a different content management system, or needs its own design and navigation. A SaaS company might keep its sales pages on the root domain while hosting support articles at help.example.com, giving customers a dedicated space for troubleshooting, documentation, and account guidance.

If your public website is primarily informational but your product lives behind a login, a structure like app.example.com, dashboard.example.com, or account.example.com creates a clean separation between marketing content and the interactive product experience. This is especially helpful when the app uses different hosting, deployment pipelines, security settings, or performance requirements than the main website.

Typical subdomain use cases
- Ecommerce: Use shop.example.com or store.example.com when the online store runs on a separate platform from the main site.
- Support: Use support.example.com or help.example.com for documentation, ticketing, FAQs, and customer service resources.
- Apps and dashboards: Use app.example.com, portal.example.com, or dashboard.example.com for logged-in product areas.
- Regional sites: Use uk.example.com, ca.example.com, or au.example.com for country-specific content, pricing, language, or compliance needs.
- Testing and staging: Use staging.example.com, dev.example.com, or test.example.com to preview changes before they go live.
- Campaigns or events: Use event.example.com or promo.example.com for short-term microsites with distinct branding or layouts.
Branding is another strong reason to use a subdomain. A business may want a section of its site to feel related to the main brand but still have its own identity. For instance, a university might use alumni.university.edu for graduates, admissions.university.edu for applicants, and research.university.edu for academic projects. Each area serves a different audience, but the root domain still signals that all of them belong to the same institution.
Technical flexibility often drives the decision as well. Subdomains can point to different servers, hosting providers, CDNs, or third-party platforms. That means your main website could run on one system, your store on Shopify, your help center on Zendesk, and your app on cloud infrastructure, all under related addresses. This setup can simplify development and operations when different parts of a business need different tools. However, subdomains should be created deliberately; if a section is closely tied to the main site and shares the same audience, content type, and SEO goals, a subdirectory may be the simpler choice.
How Subdomains Affect SEO and Analytics
Subdomains can perform well in search, but they are often treated as separate web properties from the main domain. For example, example.com and blog.example.com may share brand association, yet search engines still need to crawl, index, and evaluate the subdomain on its own merits. That means a new subdomain usually has to build its own topical relevance, internal linking structure, content quality signals, and backlink profile rather than automatically inheriting all the strength of the root domain.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →This does not mean subdomains are bad for SEO. They are useful when the content or function is genuinely distinct, such as a support portal, documentation hub, ecommerce store, app dashboard, or regional site. A subdomain can make site architecture cleaner when a section has different templates, technology, navigation, user intent, or ownership. The tradeoff is that SEO work may become more distributed. If your blog lives at blog.example.com instead of example.com/blog/, you may need stronger cross-linking between the main site and the blog to help users and crawlers understand the relationship.
Subdomains vs. subdirectories for SEO tracking
A subdirectory, such as example.com/blog/, sits inside the main domain structure and is usually easier to manage as part of one website. A subdomain, such as blog.example.com, can be tracked and optimized separately. This separation can be helpful for large organizations, but it can also make reporting more complex. In Google Search Console, subdomains are typically verified as separate properties unless you use a domain-level property. In analytics platforms, sessions may appear fragmented if cross-domain or subdomain tracking is not configured correctly.
- Search Console: Add each major subdomain as its own property, or use a domain property to view aggregated data across the root domain and subdomains.
- Analytics: Configure tracking so users moving between www.example.com, shop.example.com, and support.example.com are not counted as separate referral sessions.
- Sitemaps: Submit XML sitemaps for each subdomain that has indexable content.
- Internal links: Link clearly between the root domain and subdomains using descriptive anchor text, not only footer links.
Canonical tags also matter. If similar content appears on both a subdomain and the main site, choose the preferred version and use canonical URLs consistently. Duplicate or near-duplicate pages across www, non-www, and subdomain versions can dilute performance and confuse reporting. The same applies to inconsistent redirects, mixed HTTP and HTTPS versions, and test subdomains accidentally left indexable.
For analytics, naming conventions and filters can make reporting clearer. Track hostname data so you can separate traffic to blog.example.com from app.example.com. Set up referral exclusions or cross-domain measurement where appropriate, and align conversion goals with the role of each subdomain. A documentation subdomain may be judged by search visibility and support deflection, while a store subdomain may be judged by revenue, cart completion, and product page performance. The best setup is one where search engines can crawl each subdomain efficiently and your analytics can show how each one contributes to the wider business goal.

Security and Management Considerations
Subdomains are not just an organizational choice; they also affect how you secure, monitor, and maintain your web presence. Because a subdomain can point to a different server, application, hosting provider, or content management system than the root domain, each one should be treated as its own internet-facing property. A forgotten dev.example.com, outdated shop.example.com, or misconfigured support.example.com can create risk even if the main website is well maintained.

One of the biggest concerns is DNS management. Every subdomain depends on DNS records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, or TXT records. If these records are incorrect, traffic may fail, email verification may break, or visitors may land on the wrong service. A common security issue is a subdomain takeover, which can happen when a DNS record points to a third-party service that is no longer active. If the service account is deleted but the DNS record remains, an attacker may be able to claim that service and serve content under your subdomain.
SSL certificates and HTTPS
Each public subdomain that serves web pages should use HTTPS. You can secure subdomains with individual SSL certificates, a wildcard certificate such as *.example.com, or a multi-domain certificate. Wildcard certificates are convenient for teams managing many subdomains, but they also require careful access control because one certificate can secure many hostnames. For high-risk areas such as customer portals, checkout flows, or admin dashboards, certificate management should be deliberate, documented, and automated where possible to avoid expiration-related outages.
Access, cookies, and application boundaries
Subdomains can help separate applications, but they do not automatically isolate everything. Cookies, authentication settings, CORS policies, and session handling need close attention. For example, a cookie set for .example.com may be available across mulle subdomains, while a cookie set only for app.example.com is more limited. If one subdomain runs less-trusted software, broad cookie sharing can increase exposure. Teams should also review whether admin tools, staging environments, APIs, and internal dashboards are publicly reachable when they should be behind VPN, SSO, IP allowlisting, or another access control layer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Maintain an inventory: Track every active subdomain, its owner, purpose, hosting provider, DNS records, and renewal requirements.
- Remove stale records: Delete DNS entries for retired services, old campaigns, unused staging sites, and abandoned vendor tools.
- Use least privilege: Limit who can create DNS records, issue certificates, deploy code, or change hosting settings for each subdomain.
- Monitor continuously: Include subdomains in uptime checks, vulnerability scans, certificate monitoring, and security logging.
- Separate environments clearly: Avoid exposing staging or development sites to search engines or the public internet unless there is a clear need.
Management also becomes more complex as the number of subdomains grows. Marketing may own landing pages, engineering may own apps and APIs, support may own a help center, and IT may own email or identity-related records. Without a clear naming convention and ownership model, teams can lose track of what exists. A simple approval process for new subdomains, combined with periodic audits, helps prevent clutter and reduces operational risk. Subdomains are powerful, but they should be created intentionally and managed like long-term infrastructure, not temporary shortcuts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best Practices for Creating Subdomains
Creating a subdomain is simple, but using one well requires planning. Each subdomain should have a clear purpose, a consistent naming pattern, and the right technical setup behind it. Treat subdomains as separate web properties that still belong to your larger brand, not as random shortcuts added whenever a new project appears.
Use subdomains only when they serve a distinct purpose
A subdomain works best when the content, audience, platform, or technical requirements are meaningfully different from the main website. For example, help.example.com may host a knowledge base, app.example.com may host a web application, and developers.example.com may serve API documentation. If the content is closely tied to your main site and should benefit directly from the same navigation, design, and SEO structure, a subdirectory such as example.com/resources/ may be a better fit.
- Use clear names: Choose short, descriptive labels such as blog, shop, support, docs, or app.
- Avoid vague labels: Names like new, test, site2, or portal1 can become confusing as your site grows.
- Keep names lowercase: DNS is not case-sensitive, but lowercase names are easier to read, type, and share.
- Plan for longevity: Pick a name that will still make sense if the product, team, or content section expands.
Keep branding and navigation consistent
Even when a subdomain runs on a different system, users should still recognize it as part of the same organization. Use consistent logos, colors, footer links, privacy policies, and contact information where appropriate. If visitors move from www.example.com to support.example.com, the experience should feel connected rather than like they have landed on an unrelated website.
Navigation also matters. Link between your main domain and subdomains in a way that helps both users and search engines understand the relationship. A support subdomain might link back to the homepage, pricing page, and login page. The main website might link to support resources from the header, footer, or customer account area. Avoid creating isolated subdomains with no internal links unless they are intentionally private or restricted.

Set up DNS, SSL, and redirects carefully
Every public subdomain needs accurate DNS records. Depending on the service, this may involve an A record, AAAA record, or CNAME record. Use HTTPS on every subdomain, not just the main site. A wildcard SSL certificate can cover many subdomains, while individual certificates may be better for separate systems with different hosting providers.
- Redirect old locations: If content moves from a subdirectory to a subdomain, use 301 redirects from the old URLs to the new ones.
- Choose one canonical version: Avoid duplicate versions such as both help.example.com and www.help.example.com being accessible.
- Configure cookies deliberately: Decide whether cookies should apply only to one subdomain or across multiple subdomains.
- Verify analytics tracking: Configure cross-domain or subdomain tracking so sessions and conversions are attributed correctly.
Manage SEO signals and indexing
Subdomains can rank in search results, but they often need their own SEO attention. Submit separate XML sitemaps when needed, verify each subdomain in Google Search Console, and make sure robots.txt files are configured correctly. Use canonical tags where duplicate or similar content exists across your main domain and subdomains. For public subdomains, create high-quality internal links and avoid thin, unfinished, or duplicate sections that could weaken the overall perception of your brand.
For staging, testing, or internal tools, prevent public indexing. Use authentication, IP restrictions, or noindex directives where appropriate. Do not rely only on obscure names such as staging.example.com, because search engines and users can still discover them through links, logs, or misconfigured systems. A good subdomain strategy balances flexibility with consistency, making your website easier to manage without fragmenting your brand, analytics, or search presence.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is www a subdomain?
Yes. In www.example.com, “www” is a subdomain of example.com. It is traditionally used for the main website, but many sites now use either www or the root domain depending on their preferred setup.
Should I use a subdomain or a subdirectory for my blog?
For most blogs that support your main business or website, a subdirectory like example.com/blog is usually the simpler choice. It keeps content under the same site structure and can make SEO, analytics, and internal linking easier to manage. A subdomain like blog.example.com can make sense if the blog is run on a separate platform, has different teams, or needs its own technical setup.
Do subdomains hurt SEO?
Subdomains do not automatically hurt SEO, but search engines may treat them more separately than subdirectories. That means a new subdomain may need its own content quality, internal links, backlinks, sitemap, and tracking setup to perform well. If the subdomain is closely tied to the main site, link clearly between them and verify both properties in your SEO tools.
Can I create as many subdomains as I want?
Most domain hosts allow many subdomains, but the exact limit depends on your DNS provider, hosting plan, or server configuration. Even if you can create unlimited subdomains, you should only use them when there is a clear purpose. Too many unnecessary subdomains can make your site harder to manage, track, secure, and explain to users.

Yes, each subdomain must be covered by an SSL certificate to load securely over HTTPS. You can use a certificate for a single subdomain, a multi-domain certificate, or a wildcard certificate such as *.example.com. If you create new subdomains often, a wildcard certificate can make security management much easier.
Bottom Line
A subdomain is a useful way to separate distinct parts of your website, whether that means a blog, help center, store, app, or regional site. It gives you flexibility for organization, branding, security, and technical setup, but it should be used intentionally rather than as the default choice.
If the content belongs closely with your main site, a subdirectory is often simpler; if it needs separate management, design, functionality, or infrastructure, a subdomain can be the better fit. Before creating one, plan your SEO strategy, tracking, SSL, DNS, and internal linking so the new section supports your site instead of fragmenting it.
