A static IP address is an IP address intended to stay the same over time. A dynamic IP address can change as a network assigns or renews it. A static address can help when another system needs a dependable way to reach your network, but most people do not need one for everyday internet use.
What does “static IP address” mean?
“Static” describes whether an IP address is expected to remain stable; “dynamic” describes an address that may change. Dynamic addresses are commonly assigned using DHCP, while a static configuration may require network settings to be entered manually. The exact assignment method depends on the provider and network.

The phrase can refer to different places in a network. An internet provider may assign a public address to a customer’s connection, while a device such as a computer or printer may have a locally configured address inside a home or office network. Manually setting a device’s local address does not make the public address supplied by an internet provider static.
Static versus dynamic is also separate from public versus private: the first distinction concerns how stable the address is, while the second concerns its network context. Provider and network documentation may use “static IP” for different configurations, so check which address is being discussed.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How do static and dynamic IP addresses differ?
| Type | What to expect | Common assignment context |
|---|---|---|
| Static IP address | Intended to stay the same over time. | May be supplied by an internet provider or configured on a device; terms and setup vary by network. |
| Dynamic IP address | Can change as the network assigns or renews it. | Commonly assigned through DHCP. |
A dynamic address is not necessarily changing constantly, and “static” does not mean an address can never change under any circumstance. The practical distinction is whether the service is intended to keep the same address rather than allowing it to change.
When is a static IP useful?
A static address is most useful when an outside system needs a stable endpoint to connect to. Examples include hosting an internet-accessible web or email server, allowing an external device or service to connect by IP address, or supporting some remote-access and VPN arrangements.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
These are possible use cases, not universal requirements. Whether a particular server, VPN, or remote-access setup needs a static address depends on its software, network configuration, and provider service. Spectrum Business describes the decision in terms of whether outside users need to reach systems hosted internally.

Usually not. Google Fiber support says, “Most Fiber customers do not need any static IP addresses,” noting common activities such as web browsing, email, video streaming, and VoIP. A static address is generally relevant when a service must reliably find or connect to your network, not simply because you use the internet.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Can Dynamic DNS replace a static IP?
In some hosting situations, Dynamic DNS can be an alternative. It updates a DNS record when an internet address changes, so a service can be reached by a name rather than relying on a fixed IP address. It does not make a dynamic address static, and whether it works depends on the application, provider, and network configuration.

- Identify the connection need. Determine whether an outside person, device, or service must initiate a connection to your network, and whether it requires a fixed IP address or can use a domain name.
- Check the address context. Establish whether the requirement concerns your internet-facing address or a device’s local address; changing one does not automatically change the other.
- Ask your provider about its service. Confirm availability, the type of address offered, current plan terms, and what router or network configuration it requires. These details vary by provider and service.
- Consider Dynamic DNS where appropriate. If the only obstacle is that an address may change, ask whether the service and network support a DNS name that updates automatically.
- Confirm setup and support requirements. Router configuration can differ depending on the service. For example, Google Fiber’s instructions distinguish between configuring a single static address and a routed subnet with multiple addresses; that is a provider-specific example, not a universal rule.
Before changing plans or network settings, ask the provider whether a service change could affect existing connections or configuration. The relevant terms and any interruption implications depend on that provider.
