The term may mean an F1–F12 key, a secondary action such as volume or brightness control, or another dedicated command. What happens when you press one depends on the keyboard’s mode, the computer model, and the active application.
What does “special function key” mean?
A function key is commonly one of the keys labeled F1, F2, and so on. Cambridge Dictionary defines a function key as “one of the keys at the top of the keyboard that make the computer perform particular operations” (Cambridge Dictionary).
“Special function key” is less precise: it can describe an F key’s assigned command or a secondary function printed on a key, such as a speaker or brightness icon. Some dedicated keys also control functions without typing a character or acting as modifiers. X.Org’s older technical manual, for example, lists brightness, power, and sound controls among special-purpose keys (X.Org Foundation).
What can these keys do?
Depending on the keyboard, a key may offer a standard F1–F12 action or a secondary hardware control. Lenovo gives volume, brightness, microphone, display selection, and wireless controls as examples of secondary keyboard functions (Lenovo Support).

Function keys can also have meanings within particular software. In SAP’s ABAP Workbench documentation for version 7.40.26, F1 opens field help and F4 opens input help (SAP Help Portal). Those assignments apply to that application context; they are not a universal mapping for every program.
Why does the same key do different things?
On keyboards with both F-key commands and secondary icons, a mode setting determines which action occurs when you press a key. The Lenovo keyboard guidance describes Fn Lock as switching between standard F1–F12 actions and secondary functions such as volume and brightness. Lenovo’s ThinkPad guide also describes using Fn+Esc to change the mode (Lenovo ThinkPad user guide). These are Lenovo examples, not universal instructions: the shortcut and available settings can vary by model and manufacturer.

The active application matters too. A key may run a software command in one program while controlling a hardware feature in another, depending on the keyboard’s mode and configuration. The sources do not establish a single F-key mapping across keyboard brands, computers, or operating systems.

How to identify what a key does on your keyboard
- Check the key’s labels. An F-number usually indicates a standard function key; an additional icon may mark a secondary action.
- Look up the exact computer or keyboard model. Consult its manual or manufacturer support page for the Fn behavior and any mode-switch shortcut.
- Check the active application’s help. Software can assign its own actions to F keys, so consult its documentation when a key behaves differently in a particular program.
