A spatial computing app is software that places digital content or interaction in relation to a physical or virtual space. It might anchor an object to a room, arrange app windows around you, or create an immersive environment. The term describes how software relates to space—not one app category, one type of headset, or one company’s product.
What does spatial computing mean?
Spatial computing connects digital content and actions to a sense of space. An app may respond to a physical room, let someone position content around them, or provide a navigable virtual environment. Its interface can still use familiar flat windows: what makes the experience spatial is the relationship between the software and the space, not whether every element is three-dimensional.
The Associated Press described spatial computing as an intersection of the physical and virtual worlds. The phrase is a broad framing, not a universally standardized technical category with one required feature set. The Associated Press’s 2024 explanation offers context for the term; it should not be read as a current app catalog.
What makes an app spatial?
Consider how the app uses space, what it shows, and how a person interacts with it. An app does not have to meet every item below to be described as spatial computing.

- Connection to surroundings: Does it understand or use the physical room, or operate in a virtual environment?
- Kind of content: Does it show flat windows, movable 3D objects, or an immersive scene?
- View of the real world: Does the experience leave the room visible, blend digital content with it, or replace it with a virtual environment?
- Controls: Does it use eyes, hands, voice, controllers, or another input method? Controls vary by device and app.
- Platform: Which device and operating system does it require?
These are useful comparison questions, not a cross-platform rating standard. Apple’s guidance and Unity’s visionOS documentation describe specific platform behaviors rather than a universal classification system. Apple’s immersive-experience guidance and Unity’s visionOS documentation show how those choices work in one platform’s context.
How can a spatial app appear?
Spatial experiences range from familiar-looking app windows to fully immersive virtual environments. Unity’s visionOS documentation describes these presentation modes for that platform:

| Mode | What it means |
|---|---|
| Windows | Apps appear in window form within the spatial interface. |
| Volumes | Three-dimensional objects can be approached and viewed from different angles. |
| Shared Space | Multiple apps can occupy the shared space. |
| Full Space | One app uses a dedicated space at a time. Unity describes fully immersive VR as running in Full Space; immersive mixed-reality content can run in Shared Space or Full Space. |
These labels describe visionOS development, not modes every spatial device must offer. They also show why “spatial app” does not simply mean “VR game”: spatial software can combine ordinary windows, 3D content, and immersive scenes.
Examples of spatial computing apps
Apps arranged in a room
On Apple Vision Pro, apps and digital content can be blended with physical space and arranged around the user. Apple lists Safari, Photos, FaceTime, Apple TV, third-party App Store apps, and immersive Environments among the experiences available on the device. Apple’s Vision Pro and visionOS overview explains the product-specific experience.

3D content you can view from different angles
A 3D object presented as a volume can be approached and inspected from more than one viewpoint. This is spatial interaction even when the app is not replacing the room with a fully virtual scene.
Immersive entertainment, learning, or communication
Spatial apps can also create environments for watching content, learning, or meeting other people. The Associated Press reported such examples in February 2024; that article is a dated snapshot, not evidence of what is currently available in an app store.

Is spatial computing the same as AR, MR, or VR?
They overlap, but they are not interchangeable labels. Spatial computing is the broader idea of software, content, devices, and interaction operating in relation to space. Augmented or mixed-reality experiences can place digital material in a view of the real world; virtual-reality experiences can instead create a fully virtual environment. The reviewed platform descriptions do not establish a universal taxonomy or boundary that every company uses in the same way.
Does a spatial computing app require Apple Vision Pro?
No. Vision Pro is one consumer example, not part of the definition. Its interface illustrates spatial apps through room-aware placement, windows and 3D content, immersive Environments, and navigation using eyes, hands, and voice. Those input methods are specific to Apple’s implementation, not requirements for all spatial apps. Apple also says Vision Pro’s Apps View supports visionOS apps as well as compatible familiar iPhone and iPad apps; compatibility does not by itself make every app a spatial experience. Apple’s overview describes those device-specific details.
