What Is a Solid-State Speaker? Definition and How It Works

A solid-state speaker replaces the familiar voice-coil-and-magnet actuator with another design. In personal audio, the term often refers to piezoelectric MEMS speakers built on silicon.

A solid-state speaker produces sound without the conventional voice-coil-and-magnet driver arrangement. In current personal audio, the term often refers to a piezoelectric MEMS speaker built around a silicon structure—but “solid-state speaker” is a broad label, not one single design. The silicon structure still moves air to make sound; it simply uses a different actuator.

What “solid-state speaker” means

The phrase describes a speaker that avoids the familiar moving voice coil and magnet used in conventional dynamic drivers. It is not a precise name for one universal architecture. In small personal-audio products, it often means a micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) speaker, but other designs can also be marketed as solid-state. The European Commission’s CORDIS description of the Sonarc project, for example, uses the term for a no-moving-parts, full-audio-range platform; that does not establish that Sonarc and silicon MEMS speakers use the same implementation.

So when comparing products, look for the actual architecture—such as piezoelectric MEMS—rather than assuming every product called “solid-state” works the same way.

How a piezoelectric MEMS speaker works

In xMEMS’s implementation, a thin-film piezoelectric material sits on a silicon structure. Applying an electrical signal makes the material expand and contract, moving the structure and displacing air to produce sound. This replaces the conventional coil-and-magnet actuator. xMEMS describes its MEMS speakers as micro-electromechanical loudspeakers made using semiconductor processes; that is a description of the company’s design, not a definition that necessarily covers every solid-state product. xMEMS Labs

“Solid-state” therefore does not mean that nothing moves. The speaker’s structure moves air; what differs is the mechanism that creates that motion.

What to check when a product says it has a MEMS speaker

  • Driver role: Find out whether the MEMS element covers the full audio range or handles a particular band alongside other drivers.
  • Whole-product design: A MEMS driver can be one part of an earphone, headphone, earbud, or wearable speaker. Its presence does not make the entire device an all-MEMS design.
  • Product or component: Some MEMS speakers are parts intended for manufacturers to integrate into finished products, not consumer-ready speakers sold on their own.

Example: Kiwi Ears Halcyon

Kiwi Ears lists the Halcyon at $259 and describes it as a five-driver tribrid in-ear monitor: one MEMS driver, one 10 mm dynamic driver, and three balanced-armature drivers. The company calls its MEMS driver a solid-state speaker. The example shows why it is important to distinguish a driver from the complete product: the Halcyon combines several driver types rather than using MEMS alone. The listed price and availability may change. Kiwi Ears Halcyon

How to interpret performance comparisons

Manufacturers sometimes compare MEMS designs with conventional speakers using figures for stiffness, response, size, or weight. These figures should be read as claims about the named product and comparison, not as proof that every solid-state speaker sounds better or performs the same way.

  • In an April 2023 announcement, xMEMS said its silicon membrane was “95 times stiffer” than traditional speaker membrane materials and claimed “150 times faster” impulse response than traditional designs. These are company-reported comparisons, not independent measurements established by the cited material. xMEMS Labs, April 18, 2023
  • The CES Innovation Awards page for xMEMS Sycamore-N lists “up to 90% lighter” and “70% smaller.” Those are award-page product claims, not universal or independently verified comparisons. CES Innovation Awards: Sycamore-N

The cited product and company descriptions do not provide independent, head-to-head sound testing. A material or speed comparison alone cannot establish audible quality, reliability, or superiority in every product.

  • ✅The size of this Bluetooth music tesla coil is only 4.17 inches, and a larger top boost coil is upgraded. The optimized Tesla coil lightning arc is long and thick, and can emit a beautiful arc of more than 10 cm, showing a perfect lightning effect.
  • ✅It is a perfect teaching tool to stimulate students' interest in science. The artificial simulation of lightning can be used as a physical experiment. It can light the air pipe and various bubbles.
  • ✅Connect Bluetooth and play square wave music. The arc of Tesla coil will beat with the music. At medium power, when you touch it with your hand, it will feel itchy, which improves students' learning and exploration ability. Let the lightning dance to the rhythm of the music. Different discharges produce different tones.
  • ✅Tesla modules can be placed horizontally or vertically, which is simple to operate. Just tighten the discharge pin and insert the power supply to see the lightning.

Where the technology stands

xMEMS announced in September 2025 that Cypress and its companion drive ASIC were ready for mass production, and said customer mass-production shipments were expected in 2026. That announcement gives a schedule; it does not by itself confirm that shipments are now underway. The company’s portfolio describes MEMS speakers for in-ear products and wearables, including PulseAir for open-air listening, but these are component offerings aimed at product integration rather than necessarily finished consumer speakers. xMEMS Labs, September 2025
