A solid-state disk, more commonly called a solid-state drive (SSD), is a storage device that uses solid-state memory to keep data even when power is off. Consumer SSDs commonly use non-volatile NAND flash instead of the magnetic platters and moving read/write head found in a hard disk drive (HDD).
What does SSD stand for?
SSD usually stands for solid-state drive. “Solid-state disk” is an alternate phrase for the same broad kind of storage device. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) defines a solid-state drive as “a storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data.” NIST glossary: Solid-State Drive

How does an SSD store data?
Most consumer SSDs store data in NAND flash, a type of non-volatile memory. Non-volatile means the memory retains its contents without continuous power. Semiconductor cells hold the data, and the drive’s controller manages electronic access to it.
Because an SSD reads and writes data electronically, it has no spinning disk or mechanical read/write head. That is the key difference behind “solid state.” An HDD instead stores data magnetically on rotating platters and uses moving parts to access it. SNIA: What is an SSD?

What is an SSD used for?
An SSD provides persistent storage for a computer or other compatible device: it can hold the operating system, applications, and personal files. The definition describes what the device is, not how fast a particular SSD will perform; performance depends on the specific drive and the system it is used with.
Is an SSD the same as a hard drive?
Both SSDs and HDDs store data, but they use different media and mechanisms.

- EXCELLENCE IN PERFORMANCE: Enjoy professional level SSD performance with 870 EVO, which maximizes the SATA interface limit to 560/530 MB/s sequential speeds, Accelerates write speeds and maintains long term high performance with a larger variable buffer
- INDUSTRY DEFINING RELIABILITY: Meet the demands of every task from everyday computing to 8K video processing, with up to 2,400 TBW
- MORE COMPATIBLE THAN EVER: 870 EVO has been compatibility tested for major host systems and applications, including chipsets, motherboards, NAS, and video recording devices. Interface- SATA 6GB/s, compatible with SATA 3GB/s and SATA 1.5GB/s interfaces
| Feature | SSD | HDD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage medium | Solid-state memory, commonly NAND flash in consumer drives | Magnetic platters |
| How data is accessed | Electronically through flash memory and a controller | Through rotating platters and a moving read/write head |
| Moving mechanical parts | No spinning disk or mechanical read/write head | Yes |
An SSD’s lack of moving mechanical parts does not mean it cannot fail or lose data. It describes how it stores and accesses data, not a guarantee of permanent reliability.
Are SATA SSDs and NVMe SSDs the same?
No. SSD names a category of storage devices, not a single interface or physical shape. SATA and NVMe describe different ways SSDs communicate with a system; NVMe drives commonly use PCIe, while SATA SSDs use the SATA interface. M.2, by contrast, is a form factor and should not be treated as another name for NVMe.

Yes. NAND-based SSDs have finite write endurance: the amount of data that can be written before the drive wears out and can no longer store data safely. The endurance and useful life depend on the particular model and workload, so there is no single lifespan or write limit that applies to every SSD. SNIA: What is an SSD?
