A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) makes electricity through an electrochemical reaction: oxygen ions move through a solid, usually ceramic, electrolyte from the cathode to the anode, while electrons travel through an external circuit. SOFCs are used chiefly in stationary and distributed-power systems, including facilities, campuses, microgrids, and combined heat and power installations. Their high operating temperature can support fuel flexibility and useful heat recovery, but also brings slow startup and demanding thermal-management and durability requirements.
How a solid oxide fuel cell makes electricity
An SOFC has three key parts: a porous cathode, a solid electrolyte, and a porous anode. Air supplies molecular oxygen to the cathode. There, an electrochemical reaction turns oxygen into oxygen ions. The solid electrolyte conducts those ions to the anode, where they react with fuel. That reaction releases electrons, which flow through an external circuit and provide electrical power. NETL describes the electrolyte as conducting oxygen ions from the cathode side to the anode side of the cell (NETL’s SOFC operating-principle explanation).

The conversion inside the cell is electrochemical rather than conventional combustion. That distinction describes how electricity is produced; it does not mean the fuel supply is emissions-free. For example, the NETL demonstration described below operated on natural gas, a carbon-containing fuel. Fuel production, delivery, and system operation also matter when assessing emissions, so a claim about emissions needs a stated fuel and accounting boundary.

Cells are electrically connected into a stack; stacks can be combined in modules. An installation also needs equipment to supply fuel and air, manage operating conditions, and convert the cells’ direct-current output into alternating current for compatible loads or connection to an electrical system. Depending on the design and site, it may include equipment to recover heat. The cell, stack, and complete installation are therefore different things: a cell-level description does not by itself specify a system’s output, fuel options, efficiency, or ability to respond to changing loads.

A related technology, the solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC), uses solid-oxide cell principles in reverse: it consumes electricity to make hydrogen. That is a different operating purpose from an SOFC generating electricity. The technologies are related, but their directions of energy conversion should not be conflated.
Why SOFCs operate hot—and what that means
SOFCs use a solid electrolyte that conducts oxygen ions at high temperature. The U.S. Department of Energy says operating temperatures can be as high as 1,000°C (1,830°F); this is a general upper-range description, not a setpoint shared by every product. The temperature helps make the electrochemical process possible and can support internal fuel reforming in suitable designs. It is one reason some SOFC systems can use different fuel pathways, but it does not establish that every stack can accept every fuel without conditioning or other system changes.
Heat is both an opportunity and an engineering constraint. Where a site can use recovered heat—for example, for a suitable heating or process demand—the system may make better use of the fuel’s energy than an electricity-only installation. But the unit must reach and maintain operating temperature. DOE identifies slow startup, thermal shielding needs, and durability constraints as important challenges for SOFCs (DOE’s overview of fuel-cell types). These considerations favor planned, sustained stationary operation over applications that depend on frequent rapid starts.

- Fuel flexibility: High temperature can support internal reforming and a range of fuel approaches, subject to the specific stack and balance-of-plant design.
- Heat recovery: The operating heat may be useful if the site has a demand that matches its availability and temperature.
- Startup and thermal management: Reaching and sustaining operating conditions takes planning and equipment; high temperature also requires thermal shielding.
- Durability: Materials must withstand demanding operating conditions, so service life and operating strategy are product- and system-specific.
Natural gas, hydrogen, and other fuels
An SOFC is not synonymous with one fuel. DOE describes SOFCs as having fuel flexibility, while the NETL operating-principle material explains how fuel reacts at the anode. In practice, compatibility depends on the particular stack, fuel-processing equipment, operating conditions, and system design. Asking whether “an SOFC” can run on a fuel therefore has no universal product-independent answer.
Natural gas is a concrete example: NETL reported that its BlueGen 15 2.0 demonstration system in Morgantown was operating on natural gas in November 2024. NETL described that model as capable of using natural gas, hydrogen, bio-methane, and synthetic methane. Those are reported capabilities for that model, not a guarantee that every SOFC installation accepts those fuels or can switch among them without changes.
Vendor descriptions also need to stay tied to the vendor’s equipment. Ceres Power says its technology can work with natural gas, biogas, methanol, ammonia, and e-methane, depending on fuel processing and system arrangements. The company describes a 450–630°C “sweet spot” for its own technology; that range is not a general SOFC specification (Ceres Power’s fuel-flexibility explanation). Fuel claims should be checked against the exact system and site requirements rather than inferred from the technology label.

What efficiency figures mean
Efficiency figures can describe different outputs and should not be compared until their basis is clear. DOE says SOFCs are around 60% efficient at converting fuel to electricity. When waste heat is captured and usefully applied, total fuel-use efficiency could top 85%, according to DOE. The second figure includes useful heat as well as electricity; it is not the same measure as electricity-only efficiency, and reaching it depends on system design and a real use for recovered heat.
Recommended Free Tools
Ceres Power states that its commercial power applications can exceed 90% total efficiency in combined heat and power. That is a company claim for its applications, and its basis may differ from DOE’s broad statement that total fuel-use efficiency could top 85%. Neither value should be presented as a guaranteed result for an arbitrary site. Heat that cannot be used does not provide the same practical benefit as heat recovered for a matching demand.
When reading a quoted efficiency, ask whether it is electrical or total, whether the heat is actually recovered and used, which fuel and system are included, and whether the figure applies to a specific product, demonstration, or broader technology description. Without those distinctions, two percentages may not be measuring the same thing.

Where solid oxide fuel cells are used
Commercial facilities and campuses
Stationary power is the clearest real-world setting for SOFCs. A commercial facility or campus may use a distributed system to produce electricity near demand and, where the site has a suitable heat load, recover heat as well. Ceres Power presents commercial buildings, campuses, and facilities as settings for distributed power and heat. The company reports a Ceres-Weichai CE-certified system rated at 120 kW; this is a vendor-reported capacity and certification statement, not an independent comparison across SOFC systems (Ceres Power’s commercial power applications page).
Microgrids and resilience demonstrations
NETL reported on November 19, 2024, that a BlueGen 15 2.0 had been installed at its Morgantown, West Virginia site for microgrid testing. The project was intended to assess operation while disconnected from the grid, in island mode, and the system’s ability to follow load. NETL reported almost 1.5 kW of output while operating, up to 13,000 kWh of electricity and 7,400 kWh of heat per year, and up to 89% overall efficiency. These are figures reported for that model and installation, not typical or guaranteed performance for SOFCs as a class. The installation is evidence of a demonstration, not proof that all SOFC systems provide the same resilience capability or annual output (NETL’s November 19, 2024 demonstration report).
Data centers and other potential applications
NETL’s SOFC program identifies natural-gas-based distributed electricity as a program focus and lists data centers, microgrids, charging and fueling stations, well-head power, and energy conversion networks as application areas (NETL’s SOFC program page). These are program-identified applications, not a census showing that each use is widespread or commercially mature. Ceres Power also names data centers, utility power, and marine auxiliary or propulsion loads as use cases for its technology. Such vendor-described use cases should be read as technology-specific applications, not proof of universal suitability across SOFC products.
Best Value
These examples point to a stationary and distributed-power role rather than a universal replacement for grid electricity or a consumer generator. A project’s suitability depends on the required electrical service, the available fuel, heat demand, operating schedule, and the work needed to integrate and maintain the installation.
How to assess whether an SOFC system fits a site
For a facility considering an SOFC, compare the whole installation and its job—not just the cell chemistry or a headline efficiency. The questions below help distinguish a continuous-power project from a backup or microgrid use case and expose mismatches before comparing proposals.
- Define the electrical duty. Establish the required output and whether the system is intended for continuous operation, backup, islanded service, or load following. A demonstration that tests island mode or load following does not establish that every commercial product offers those modes.
- Check the actual fuel supply. Confirm which fuel the specific system accepts, what processing or reforming it requires, and whether a proposed alternative fuel is supported by the manufacturer for that configuration. A broad description of SOFC fuel flexibility is not enough to establish compatibility.
- Identify a real heat user. If a project depends on combined heat and power, map the site’s heat demand against the system’s recoverable heat and operating schedule. Total-efficiency claims depend on useful heat recovery, not merely on heat being produced.
- Plan for temperature and operating pattern. Account for startup behavior, sustained operation, thermal shielding, and the durability implications of the intended duty cycle. A high-temperature system is not automatically a good fit for a use case requiring repeated rapid starts.
- Ask for the emissions boundary. Determine the fuel and accounting scope behind any emissions figure. The electrochemical conversion process is not conventional combustion, but natural gas and other carbon-containing fuels do not become emissions-free by being used in an SOFC.
- Scope integration and service. Include fuel and air handling, electrical conversion, potential heat-recovery equipment, installation constraints, and service requirements in the project assessment. A cell or stack specification alone does not describe these needs.
The cited material does not establish a comparable lifecycle-cost dataset for ranking SOFC systems. Cost comparisons therefore need project-specific proposals and consistent assumptions rather than a vendor ranking inferred from capacity, efficiency, or application claims.
What SOFCs are—and are not
An SOFC is a high-temperature electrochemical electricity generator built around an oxygen-ion-conducting solid electrolyte. In practice, it is deployed as part of a larger power system, often for stationary or distributed use. Its operating temperature can enable fuel-processing options and heat recovery, while making startup, shielding, and durability central engineering concerns.
It is not a single standardized product with one output, efficiency, temperature, or fuel list. DOE’s general figures describe the technology broadly; NETL’s output and efficiency numbers describe a specific demonstration model and site; and vendor capacity, temperature, fuel, and efficiency statements apply to the vendor’s system or claims. Keeping those scopes separate is essential when deciding where an SOFC can be used.
