A social VR app is a networked 3D space where people meet and interact in real time as avatars. People can move around, communicate and respond to one another’s positions or gestures; socializing is a central purpose, even when an app also offers games, events, shared media or creation tools.
What does social VR mean?
In a useful working definition, social VR describes 3D virtual spaces—primarily accessed through VR head-mounted displays—that let geographically distant people interact through avatars. The important part is not just that multiple users appear in the same scene: they meet and communicate within a shared spatial environment. A peer-reviewed 2022 paper summarizes the term this way: “The term ‘social VR’ refers to 3D virtual spaces, primarily accessed using VR head-mounted displays, that allow (geographically distant) users to interact with each other using avatars.” Computers in Human Behavior, 2022.

Movement and spatial cues give these spaces a different character from ordinary text, voice or video chat. Avatars may approach or move away from one another, gesture, or gather around a shared activity. These cues can contribute to a feeling of being together, although the experience varies by platform and person. What do people do in social VR?
Social VR is a category of experience, not a single activity. A platform may emphasize one kind of use while including others:

- Conversation: meet friends or encounter other users in a shared virtual place.
- Events: attend gatherings or activities with other people.
- Shared media: watch or experience content together.
- Games: play together in an avatar-based social setting.
- Creation: build or customize spaces and activities for others to visit.
A game can count as social VR when meeting and interacting with other users through avatars is central to the experience. By contrast, a multi-user simulation with little interpersonal interaction may be better described by its task or application. How is social VR different from the metaverse or multiplayer VR?
These labels overlap, but they are not interchangeable definitions with universally settled boundaries. “Social VR” points to avatar-mediated interaction in shared 3D spaces. “Multiplayer VR” can describe any VR experience involving multiple players, including one centered on a task or game rather than socializing. “Virtual world” is a broader description of a computer-generated environment, while “metaverse” is used in different ways for connected or persistent virtual experiences. The label alone does not tell you what people do in an app or how they interact.

Do you need a VR headset?
Headsets are a common, often central way to access social VR, but the general definition does not establish that every app requires one. Supported devices and non-VR options vary by platform. Check the app’s current device requirements before assuming you can join from a desktop or phone—or that a headset is mandatory.
Examples of social VR platforms
Research literature names VRChat, Rec Room, Horizon Worlds and Bigscreen as examples of social VR platforms. These are examples, not a complete or permanent directory: availability, supported devices and features can change. The same literature discusses AltspaceVR in a historical context; that mention does not establish that the platform is currently available. What to check when comparing social VR apps
Because the category covers different kinds of platforms, compare the specific experience rather than relying on the label:
- Access: Which headsets and other devices are supported? Is desktop or mobile access available?
- Main activity: Is the focus conversation, games, events, shared media or creation?
- Social mechanics: How do users find friends, join shared spaces, invite others and communicate?
- Spatial interaction: Can avatars move, gesture and interact through proximity? How are other users represented?
- User controls: What options are documented for privacy, accessibility, moderation and managing unwanted interaction?
Some platforms support social presence beyond the virtual room, including features for sharing, invitations and joining sessions.
