What Is a Smart Electrical Panel? Definition and How It Works

A smart electrical panel adds monitoring, communication, and sometimes load control to a home’s electrical distribution system. Here’s how the different types work and what to consider.

A smart electrical panel is an electrical distribution panel or panel-based energy-management system that adds monitoring, communication, and control to the circuits in a building. Depending on the design, it can show energy use, manage selected electrical loads, and coordinate with solar, batteries, or backup power. The term covers several kinds of products—not one standardized panel.

What does a smart electrical panel do?

A conventional panel distributes electricity from the home’s electrical service to branch circuits. A smart system adds ways to measure electrical conditions, communicate that information to an energy-management platform, and sometimes control equipment or selected circuits. Schneider Electric describes these functions in its Electrical Installation Guide.

Depending on the system, a homeowner or building operator may be able to see energy use, power, equipment status, or alarms locally or through a networked interface. Monitoring and control are separate capabilities: some products mainly report information, while others can actively manage loads.

What forms do residential smart panels take?

In a home, “smart panel” may describe a few different arrangements. Berkeley ECOBlock’s overview of residential smart panels discusses these product forms and their role in managing loads.

  • Command home power center with 32 smart circuits.
  • Seamless Backup in <20 ms.
  • Extend Backup time by up to 42%.
  • Note: Smart Home Panel 3 requires installation before use.
  • Smart breakers: Connected breakers add monitoring or control to individual circuits or a limited number of loads.
  • An add-on controller: A separate system connects to an existing conventional panel to monitor or manage selected circuits.
  • A replacement panel: A smart panel replaces the existing panel and may provide broader circuit visibility and control.

Features vary by product and configuration. For example, Eaton describes its smart-panel system as offering visibility and control over connected circuits and load management; those capabilities should not be assumed for every product marketed as “smart.” See Eaton’s smart-panel overview.

How does smart-panel load management work?

A system can measure or receive information about electricity use, then manage selected loads against a service or panel limit. If several major appliances are drawing power, it might temporarily defer a lower-priority load—such as EV charging—and allow it to resume when capacity is available. Which loads can be controlled, and how priorities are set, depends on the hardware, configuration, and installation.

Smart panels can help prioritize circuits for backup, but they do not generate electricity or guarantee that power will be available during an outage. Backup requires compatible generation or storage equipment and a suitable configuration. Berkeley ECOBlock describes apps that can reconfigure backed-up appliances and prioritize critical loads; see its smart-panel overview.

Do you need a smart electrical panel?

A smart panel may be worth considering if you are adding substantial electric loads—such as an EV charger, heat pump, or electric water heater—and also want whole-home monitoring, flexible load control, or coordination with solar and batteries. Eaton lists panel replacement, retrofit, subpanel, EV charging, and whole-home electrification among the applications for its system (Eaton).

It is not automatically necessary just because a home faces a service-capacity constraint. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2026 builder guide says a full smart panel may be an unnecessarily expensive way to address a 200A service challenge if the homeowner does not need other energy-management features or the customer interface. For just one or two loads, a smart breaker or an automatic load-sharing device may be a narrower option. See the LBNL builder guide.

What should you compare?

Before choosing an approach, compare what it controls and what the installation requires—not just whether it is labeled “smart.”

  • Scope: Does it provide visibility and control across the whole panel, or only for one or a few circuits?
  • Capacity management: Does it actively manage a service or panel limit, or only report consumption?
  • Energy and backup integration: Does it support your solar, battery, and critical-load configuration?
  • Compatibility and installation: Will it work with the existing panel, planned loads, available breaker spaces, site conditions, and local rules?
  • Cost and value: Do the hardware and installation costs make sense for the specific features you expect to use?
  • Data and connectivity: What local or app-based access is available, what communications are required, and do the privacy and security arrangements suit you?

  • ENERGY STAR’s homeowner electric-readiness guidance gives an approximate smart-panel cost range of $2,500–$4,000. This is not an installed quote and may not reflect current local prices. See ENERGY STAR’s electric-readiness guidance.
  • LBNL’s 2026 builder guide cites $3,000 or more for hardware alone when discussing a smart panel as an expensive approach to a 200A service challenge if additional energy-management features are not needed. See the LBNL guide.

Because those figures refer to different contexts and do not establish a local installed price, get current equipment and installation quotes for your home.

What should a homeowner check before installation?

ENERGY STAR advises homeowners to check the main-breaker rating and available breaker slots, then review capacity and planned appliances with a licensed electrician. Local permitting restrictions may apply to electrical work. A site-specific assessment is needed to establish whether a product fits or can avoid a service upgrade.

  1. Check the existing panel’s main-breaker rating and the number of available breaker slots.
  2. List planned appliances and loads, such as an EV charger, heat pump, or water heater, and discuss them with a licensed electrician.
  3. Ask the electrician to confirm product compatibility, service and load calculations, installation scope, permits, and applicable code requirements.

ENERGY STAR’s homeowner guidance covers these initial checks and permitting considerations: electric-readiness guidance.

Do smart electrical panels guarantee lower bills?

No. A 2023 U.S. Department of Energy/NREL project presentation projected a 10% utility-bill saving for typical homes as a project benefit. It described simulations, hardware-in-the-loop laboratory experiments, and a field demonstration as its validation approach; the figure is not a demonstrated universal saving or a guarantee for buyers. See the DOE/NREL project presentation.
