A small modular reactor (SMR) is a nuclear fission reactor designed at a smaller scale than conventional large nuclear power plants. Fission generates heat in its core; a coolant transfers that heat for electricity generation or direct industrial use. “SMR” describes a varied class of designs, not one standard reactor blueprint.
How does an SMR work?
The basic energy source is nuclear fission: atoms split in the reactor core and release heat. What happens next depends on the reactor design and the job the plant is intended to do.

- Fission produces heat. Fuel in the core undergoes fission, releasing energy as heat.
- A coolant transfers the heat. The coolant carries heat away from the core. SMR designs may use light water or other coolants, including gas, liquid metal, or molten salt. The U.S. Department of Energy’s overview of advanced SMRs describes this range of technologies.
- The heat is used. In an electricity-generating plant, heat can drive a turbine-generator system. Depending on the design, heat may instead be supplied directly for industrial processes. Potential applications also include desalination.
There is no single detailed flow diagram that fits every SMR. Reactor type, coolant, fuel, and the way heat is delivered vary by design.
What does “small modular” mean?
“Small” distinguishes these reactors from conventional large nuclear plants, but it does not identify one universal capacity or design. “Modular” commonly refers to making major components in a factory and transporting them to the site. The U.S. Department of Energy defines the term this way: “The term ‘modular’ in the context of SMRs refers to the ability to fabricate major components of the nuclear steam supply system in a factory environment and ship to the point of use.” (DOE, Benefits of Small Modular Reactors.)

- Exquisite Appearance: This is a simple MK1 Arc Reactor model with an integrated blue LED light that emits an impressive glow, whether during the day or at night.
- Disassembled Kit: This reactor comes as a DIY assembly kit with a detailed instruction to ensure you can successfully complete the assembly.
- Complete Accessories: Including a USB power cable with a switch and a simple acrylic stand. Additionally, essential components come with spares for replacement in case of damage during assembly.
- Home Decor Piece: Used for various creative projects, such as computer case modifications, electric vehicle lighting upgrades, or as a unique nightlight or desk decoration. Arouse your creativity and imagination to personalize your decor.
- Notes: Glue is required (Not Included) during the assembly process. You will also need to provide your own 5V USB charging adapter, or you can power it by connecting to a power bank or computer.
Some projects may also add reactor modules over time as demand grows. Modularity does not mean that the entire plant necessarily arrives finished from a factory, or that every project can expand in this way.
How do SMR designs differ?
SMR is a category, not a single reactor model. Designs can differ in their coolant, fuel, power output, safety systems, and intended uses. Some use light water; others are designed around non-light-water coolants such as gas, liquid metal, or molten salt. These differences affect how each reactor operates and what a proposed plant can supply.

- 1. Very cool illuminant arc reactor ornament lamp.
- 2. Night light, powerer by USB cord, variable brightness.
- 3. 1:1 arc reactor model with real effect.
- 4. Delicate design and details makes high quality effect.
- 5. Compared with the drive-by-wire one, the wireless remote control one has more amazing modes than always-on mode. We can make use of the remote controller to switch mode such as Beating Damage Mode and Slow Breathing Mode, whose key distinction is the flash frequency of lighting. What’s more, you can adjust the brightness and set up the gradient mode.
For that reason, a feature claimed for one design should not automatically be applied to all SMRs. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission treats advanced reactor technologies as a range of designs, rather than one standardized system. Its advanced reactors overview also discusses microreactors separately; the terms should not be treated as interchangeable.

The DOE identifies potential benefits such as a lower initial capital investment, siting flexibility, factory production, and the option to add capacity incrementally. These are possibilities, not guaranteed results. Actual cost, construction time, and performance depend on the design, site, licensing process, supply chain, financing, and number of units deployed.

Safety claims also need to be evaluated design by design. Some proposed SMRs include passive safety features, but no such feature makes every reactor in the category inherently safer. Safety and security reviews, safeguards, licensing, emergency arrangements, reliable fuel supply, and plans for spent fuel and radioactive waste remain essential parts of development and oversight. The IAEA’s strategic objective on nuclear technology includes safety, security, safeguards, and waste management among the issues involved.

Interest in the technology is not the same as a licensed project, a reactor under construction, or a plant in commercial operation. The IAEA SMR Platform Annual Report 2025 says more than 40 Member States had expressed interest in SMR technologies and applications. That figure measures interest, not the number of committed projects or operating reactors.

- Magnetic Levitation Arc Reactor: Utilizing advanced magnetic levitation technology, this arc reactor floats and rotates in mid-air without any support or contact, creating a futuristic and awe-inspiring presence. The LED lighting adds to its high-tech appeal.
- Multi-scenario application: suitable for placement on a desk, nightstand or any space that needs a little something special; also a great addition to museum exhibits and collections around film and television.
The IAEA report also says its first three SMR Schools—in Kenya, Thailand, and Argentina—involved more than 100 participants from 27 countries. Those numbers describe educational outreach, not deployment.
The DOE describes U.S. light-water SMRs as under Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing review and says advanced SMRs still face significant technology-development and licensing risks. Licensing progress should not be read as a guarantee that a particular plant will begin operating on a particular date.
How should economic claims be interpreted?
A DOE page cites a 2010 study by the Energy Policy Institute of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies examining a prototypical 100 MWe SMR. The study estimated a $500 million project could support nearly 7,000 jobs, $1.3 billion in sales, $404 million in earnings, and $35 million in indirect business taxes under its modeled deployment scenarios. These are historical scenario estimates from that study—not current cost figures, present-day job forecasts, or guaranteed economic effects.
When evaluating a specific proposal, compare like with like: the same geography, date, project scope, financing assumptions, and deployment scale. A headline cost or schedule by itself cannot establish that one reactor design is cheaper or faster than another.
