A shared web server is one server machine that hosts multiple websites. The sites may share an IP address: with name-based virtual hosting, the server uses the hostname in a visitor’s request to choose which site to serve. “Shared hosting” is the related service model in which customers share access to a web-server environment.
What “shared web server” means
Apache’s documentation defines a virtual host as “the practice of running more than one web site (such as company1.example.com and company2.example.com) on a single machine.” That is the core technical idea: multiple websites are hosted by the same server machine. The phrase describes how websites are hosted, not a specific product, server brand, or guaranteed performance level. It also does not mean that a website owner necessarily has access to other customers’ files or accounts.
How one server can host several websites
When someone visits a domain, the browser sends a request for that hostname. DNS maps the hostname to an IP address. If several hostnames point to the same address, the web server can use the requested hostname and its configuration to select the matching website. Apache’s name-based virtual-host documentation describes this DNS mapping and server configuration. Apache HTTP Server: Name-based Virtual Host Support

IP-based and name-based virtual hosting
- Name-based: Multiple website names can use the same IP address; the server distinguishes requests by hostname.
- IP-based: Websites use different IP addresses, and the server configuration directs requests accordingly.
These are ways to route requests to the right website. They do not, by themselves, say how much computing capacity a site receives.
Shared web server versus shared hosting
A shared web server is the technical arrangement: one machine hosts multiple sites. Shared hosting is a service customers buy from a hosting provider. AWS describes shared hosting as customers sharing access to a web server; a customer is buying a hosting service, not the physical server itself. AWS: What is Web Hosting?

Providers’ plans can differ in their resource allocations, limits, and terms. The word “shared” alone does not establish a particular amount of memory, processing capacity, storage, or traffic allowance. Check the provider’s current plan details for those specifics.
How shared hosting differs from VPS hosting
The useful distinction is the degree of resource access and isolation. AWS describes VPS hosting as offering more exclusive access to server resources than shared hosting, while Google Cloud describes VPS hosting as providing greater isolation and control than basic shared hosting. | Arrangement | What is shared or separated | What the description establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared hosting | Customers share access to a web-server environment. | A shared service arrangement; the particular limits depend on the provider’s plan terms. |
| VPS hosting | Customers have more exclusive access to server resources, with greater isolation and control than basic shared hosting. | A different resource-access arrangement; it is not a universal promise of better speed, security, uptime, or cost. |
What the term does—and does not—tell you
- It tells you that a server machine hosts multiple websites.
- It does not mean every site must have its own IP address.
- It does not identify which web-server software is in use; the concept is not limited to Apache.
- It does not guarantee a particular level of performance, security, uptime, or isolation. Those depend on the specific hosting setup and terms.
