A server operating system (server OS) is system software that manages a server computer’s hardware and software resources and provides common services for the programs running on it. It is the platform beneath workloads such as websites, databases, and file sharing. “Server” describes the computer’s network role; it does not mean that the operating system is itself a server application.
What does a server operating system do?
Like any operating system, a server OS coordinates computer resources and gives applications a consistent environment to run in. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes operating systems as managing hardware resources and providing common services to programs. Its glossary lists responsibilities such as input/output control, resource scheduling, and data management.

In a server environment, the OS also supports the administration, user management, and security needed to provide services over a network. The particular services depend on the software installed above the OS; a server OS does not necessarily include every server application.

- Provides common services and interfaces that applications use.
- Supports networked administration and workloads such as web services and databases.
NIST’s operating-system glossary and Red Hat’s overview of Linux servers describe these roles.

How is a server OS different from a server or a server application?
These terms refer to different layers:
- Server hardware or virtual machine: The physical computer or virtual environment supplying CPU, memory, storage, and network interfaces.
- Server operating system: The system software that manages those resources and supports programs.
- Server workload or service: The application that provides a function, such as a website, database, file sharing, or printing.
For example, “database server” can refer to a machine or to its service role. The database program is a workload running on an operating system, not the operating system itself. NIST’s server glossary gives file, print, network, and database servers as examples of systems that manage network resources.
Is Windows Server an operating system?
Yes. Microsoft describes Windows Server as its enterprise server platform for running and securing applications, services, and workloads. Its documentation covers uses such as file servers, web applications, and other enterprise workloads, with deployment in datacenters, Azure, and hybrid edge environments. The documentation page applies to Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, and was last updated August 1, 2025; features and support details can vary by release.

Linux-based systems
Linux is a family of open-source operating systems built around the Linux kernel. A Linux server is a server running a Linux variant; it can host workloads such as web services and databases. Red Hat describes Linux server deployments across bare-metal hardware, virtual machines, and containers, including private and public clouds. This is a vendor overview, not an exhaustive list of Linux distributions or a ranking.

Windows Server
Windows Server is Microsoft’s enterprise server platform. Microsoft documents its use across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud settings, including Azure, datacenters, and hybrid edge deployments. These are two examples rather than the only server OS choices.
Server operating systems may run on physical machines, virtual machines, or within broader containerized, cloud, and hybrid environments. The deployment model describes where and how workloads run; it does not make the workload itself an operating system.
