A “robotic horse” is usually a reader-friendly description, not a separate engineering category. The machines that look or move like four-legged animals are generally called quadruped robots. They walk by coordinating articulated legs, actuators, sensors and control software to place their feet and keep the body stable.
What does “robotic horse” mean?
In this context, “robotic horse” describes an appearance or style of movement. The technical term used by manufacturers is usually quadruped robot, meaning a robot that moves on four legs. Some companies also use terms such as “bionic quadruped” or “robot dog.” The official product descriptions cited here do not establish “robotic horse” as a distinct type of robot.

Quadrupeds are not all built for the same purpose. Some are platforms for education and research; others are consumer-oriented products or commercial systems for inspection and industrial work. A four-legged shape alone does not tell you what a robot can do.

How does a quadruped robot walk and balance?
A quadruped has a main body, four legs and joints that let the legs move. Actuators—often electric motors—drive those joints. Sensors provide information about the robot’s movement, foot contact and surroundings. A controller uses that information to command the actuators, coordinating foot placement and body movement as the robot takes steps.

Joints and actuators move the legs
The details vary by model. Boston Dynamics describes Spot as having a ball joint at the hip and a hinged knee between upper and lower leg sections, with three motors in each leg. That is one design example, not a requirement for every quadruped. Boston Dynamics’ Spot overview describes how the company’s robot uses its hardware and sensors to move through indoor and outdoor environments and adopt different postures.
Sensors help the controller respond
Unitree’s A1 illustrates how sensing and motor commands can work together. Its listed equipment includes a depth camera, optional lidar and four pressure sensors at the feet. The documentation describes access to sensor data and separate position, speed and torque commands for each motor. It also describes foot-force sensing and a dynamic-balancing algorithm. Other quadrupeds may use different sensors, actuators and control methods; these features are not universal.
In practical terms, foot-contact information can help a robot determine whether a foot is supporting the body or has reached the ground. The controller can then adjust its commands as the robot moves. The exact algorithms and how well they work depend on the particular robot and task.

Why the movement can look animal-like
A quadruped may move in a way that looks organic, but lifelike motion does not mean it is simply imitating an animal. Boston Dynamics says its robots are built to balance and move dynamically, and explains: “While we take the natural world as inspiration for our robots, the design is ultimately motivated by functionality.”
Where can four legs help?
Legs can help a robot negotiate certain obstacles that are difficult for wheeled or tracked machines. Boston Dynamics points to settings such as rocky trails, staircases, catwalks, doorways and narrow or cluttered passages. Stairs, gaps, cables, staged materials and small changes in floor height can all challenge wheeled or tracked systems.
That advantage is situational, not a guarantee that a quadruped can cross any obstacle. Whether it can manage a route depends on the model, its sensors and control system, the surface and the task.

What are quadruped robots used for?
Industrial inspection and public safety
Boston Dynamics presents Spot as an industrial inspection robot and describes public-safety and tactical uses. The company says Spot can collect data along operator-defined inspection routes and replan around obstacles during an autonomous mission. These are company-stated capabilities and use cases, not an independent evaluation.

Performance numbers are meaningful only when tied to a particular model and its stated conditions. The following figures are manufacturer claims, not independently tested comparisons:

|---|---|---|
| Unitree A1 | Maximum continuous running speed of 3.3 m/s; endurance of 1–2.5 hours; maximum joint torque of 33.5 N·m. | Unitree’s product page does not state a publication year for these figures. Its depth-camera range is listed as 0.3–10 m, with depth accuracy under 2% within 2 m. These are product specifications, not independent test results. |
| Unitree B2 | Speed up to 6 m/s; more than five hours of operation; 20 kg load capability. | Unitree’s article does not state a year for these figures. The more-than-five-hour operation figure is specified for no-load operation; it should not be read as runtime under load. |
These numbers should not be treated as typical of all quadrupeds or as a direct head-to-head comparison. The models, loads and stated operating conditions differ, and no neutral cross-model benchmark is established in the sources cited here.
What should you compare when choosing a quadruped?
Start with the job the robot is meant to do. A research platform, a consumer-oriented robot and an industrial inspection system may share four legs but differ substantially in equipment and support.
- Intended use: education and research, consumer use, inspection or another industrial task.
- Sensing and navigation: which cameras, lidar or contact sensors are included, and what data the developer can access.
- Control access: whether the system exposes development interfaces or lets you issue low-level motor commands.
- Terrain and task: the obstacles and surfaces the specific model is designed to handle.
- Payload and operating duration: the stated load and runtime, including whether the runtime figure is measured with or without a load.
- Purchase and support model: who the product is intended for and what commercial availability the manufacturer currently offers.
The official sources cited here describe specific products and manufacturer-stated capabilities; they do not provide an independent, comparable evaluation across models.
