What Is a Reverse Proxy, and Why Use One for Self-Hosted Apps?

A reverse proxy routes requests to self-hosted apps through one entry point. Learn how it works, when a tunnel may fit, and what it does not secure.

A reverse proxy is a server that accepts requests on behalf of other servers and forwards each request to the right application. If you host several apps at home, it can give them one managed entry point: for example, a request for photos.example.com can be sent to a photo app running on a private address and port. A reverse proxy can also handle HTTPS, but it does not automatically secure the apps behind it.

How does a reverse proxy work?

The browser connects to the proxy rather than directly to the app. The proxy checks the request—often its hostname—and forwards it to a configured upstream, meaning the application server that should handle it. The app’s response travels back through the proxy to the browser.

  1. The browser requests a hostname. For example, it asks for photos.example.com.
  2. DNS directs the request. Depending on the setup, the name resolves to a public-facing proxy or traffic is routed through a tunnel provider.
  3. The proxy chooses an upstream. A rule can send the photo hostname to an app listening on a local address and port. Cloudflare’s published-application example maps app.example.com to http://localhost:8080 (Cloudflare Tunnel routing documentation).
  4. The app responds through the proxy. The browser receives the response from the same public-facing entry point.

This hostname-to-service arrangement is one common pattern, not a requirement to use Cloudflare or even a public domain. The relevant mapping depends on the proxy and network design.

Why use one for self-hosted apps?

  • One consistent entry point: Instead of remembering a different public address and port for each app, you can route distinct hostnames to the appropriate services.
  • Centralized HTTPS: A proxy such as Caddy can serve as the HTTPS-facing layer and forward requests to applications behind it. Caddy’s reverse-proxy quick start demonstrates a basic setup with HTTPS.
  • One place for routing rules: The proxy’s configuration can define which upstream handles each hostname. This can make the access arrangement easier to manage as you add or change apps.

These are deployment conveniences, not security guarantees. A proxy does not inherently block attacks, patch applications, add app-level authentication, enforce access policies, or isolate services. Keep public access limited to apps intended to be reachable, and use an appropriate VPN or access-control layer for services that should remain private.

Reverse proxy versus forward proxy

The difference is whose requests the proxy represents. A reverse proxy receives requests for servers or applications and forwards them to those services. A forward proxy serves client requests, for example by mediating or regulating a client’s access to external resources. They are both proxies, but they sit on opposite sides of the client-server relationship.

Self-managed reverse proxy or managed tunnel?

A tunnel is another way to publish an application. It can route traffic through a provider without exposing an inbound connection to your origin, but traffic then depends on that provider’s network. The choice is about control, connectivity, and dependencies—not a universal ranking of which design is safer or easier.

Consideration Self-managed reverse proxy Managed tunnel
Request path The operator arranges ingress to the proxy, which forwards requests to configured upstreams. The precise network requirements vary by deployment. With Cloudflare Tunnel, cloudflared maintains an outbound connection and public traffic flows through Cloudflare’s network (Cloudflare Tunnel documentation).
Inbound connectivity A conventional public-facing setup may require the operator to arrange public ingress; the exact requirements depend on the network and deployment. Cloudflare says its Tunnel model needs no public origin IP and no inbound ports (Cloudflare Tunnel documentation).
Control and dependency You manage the proxy and its configuration directly. The provider mediates routing, so availability and applicable service terms are part of the design.
Upstream trust You must configure how the proxy connects to and trusts the upstream app, particularly if that connection uses HTTPS. A tunnel changes the route into your network; it does not remove the need to secure the application or evaluate provider dependencies.

Cloudflare’s routing terms are use- and plan-specific. Its documentation says Free, Pro, and Business customers must use a specified paid service to serve video and other large files through public-hostname routes. Check the current routing documentation and terms for your plan and workload before relying on that route.

Configuration details that affect security

Know which connection HTTPS protects

HTTPS between a browser and a proxy protects that leg; it does not, by itself, prove that the proxy-to-app connection is encrypted or that the app is secure. If the upstream uses HTTPS, the proxy must validate its certificate appropriately. Caddy’s documentation warns that disabling upstream TLS verification removes HTTPS security checks and is not recommended (Caddy reverse_proxy HTTPS documentation).

Trust forwarded headers only from known proxies

Proxies commonly pass client information in forwarded headers. If another proxy or CDN sits in front of your reverse proxy, configure trusted proxy addresses so the reverse proxy accepts that information only from known sources. Caddy’s reverse_proxy documentation covers trusted proxies and warns that X-Forwarded-For can be spoofed when Cloudflare is in front of Caddy. Incorrect trust settings can make the recorded client address unreliable.

Check application behavior and exposure

A proxy must be configured to reach the correct upstream, and the app still needs its own authentication, updates, and safe configuration. Caddy’s reverse proxy supports WebSocket upgrades; verify the needs of your app and proxy configuration rather than assuming every app uses only ordinary web requests. If the proxy is behind another provider, confirm how that arrangement affects DNS, client information, and the traffic path.

When is a reverse proxy a good fit?

  • Use one when you want several web apps reachable through a consistent hostname-based entry point and are prepared to configure and maintain the proxy.
  • Consider a tunnel when avoiding inbound connections to your origin is a priority and you accept the provider dependency and its applicable terms.
  • Keep an app private—using a VPN or access-control approach—when it should not be exposed to the public internet. A reverse proxy alone is not a privacy boundary.

Neither option removes the need to understand what is exposed, how each connection is protected, and which component is responsible for authentication and access control.
