A remote control program is software that lets an authorized person view or operate a computer or application from another location. In a typical support session, the operator can see the remote screen and use its keyboard or mouse; some programs also support file or clipboard transfers. The term here means computer software, not a physical television remote. Features and access rules vary by product and setup.
What does a remote control program do?
It connects a controlling device or application to a computer or application being controlled. Depending on the software and permissions, the operator may view the screen, send keyboard and mouse input, or use additional functions such as transferring files or clipboard contents. Some tools support view-only sessions; others allow interaction.

The phrase describes a category of software, not one particular brand or network protocol. For example, AhnLab’s endpoint documentation describes an administrator viewing a client computer’s screen and operating its keyboard or mouse, with file and clipboard transfer also documented. Those are capabilities of that product, not a guarantee about every program (AhnLab Endpoint Protection Platform documentation).
How does remote control software work?
During a session, the software exchanges information between the operator’s side and the remote endpoint: screen or application output travels to the operator, while permitted input travels back. A 1999 U.S. patent describes one historical example in which an application and a remote display module exchange control messages and input/output data over a network. It illustrates the general idea, but it is not a specification for all modern products (U.S. Patent 5,909,545).

Some designs use a local application for the operator and an agent or service on the remote computer. DameWare Mini Remote Control documentation, for example, describes an operator application and a client agent service deployed to remote systems. This is one architecture rather than a universal requirement; deployment and authentication details depend on the product (DameWare Mini Remote Control Reference).
What is remote control software used for?
- Technical support: A technician can inspect a user’s computer and help diagnose or resolve a problem remotely.
- Remote administration: An authorized administrator can manage or troubleshoot endpoints without being physically present.
- Telecommuting: An employee may connect to a work computer from another location, subject to the organization’s setup and access policies.
- Industrial maintenance: Some workflows involve more than viewing a desktop. Rockwell Automation describes a particular FactoryTalk Optix and FactoryTalk Remote Access workflow for connecting to controllers and networks and assisting with deployment, programming, troubleshooting, and maintenance through a VPN. That vendor-specific example should not be taken as a capability of every remote-control program (Rockwell Automation Application Hub).
Is remote control software safe?
It can be a legitimate support and administration tool, but remote access also creates risk if someone gains access without authorization. A security chapter in Hack I.T.: Security Through Penetration Testing discusses both legitimate remote-control use and the exposure created when an attacker installs or uses such a program after gaining system access (O’Reilly Media, Chapter 18: “Remote Control”).

Installation by itself does not establish that a connection is authorized. Access should be governed by permissions, authentication, and, where the product or policy requires it, the device user’s consent. AhnLab documents permission settings for administrators and consent choices that can allow or deny a remote-control session. DameWare documentation describes user authentication and notes that its remote agent service runs under the Local System account; that account detail is product-specific, not a general rule.

- Confirm who initiated the session and why.
- Check which account authenticated and what permissions it has.
- Establish whether the person at the remote device must consent and whether that consent was given.
- Know whether the operator has view-only access, keyboard and mouse control, file transfer, clipboard access, or other capabilities.
- Understand how to end the session and how access is managed afterward.
Never treat a request to bypass consent or connect to a device without authorization as a normal support step. For exact controls and current behavior, consult the documentation for the specific product and deployment.

What should you check when choosing a program?
Choose according to the task and the access boundaries you need, rather than assuming that every product has the same controls. Useful questions include:
- Use case: Is the software intended for consumer assistance, a help desk, enterprise endpoint management, or industrial access?
- Session permissions: Can the operator be limited to viewing, or can policy restrict keyboard and mouse control?
- Consent and authentication: How do users authenticate, and can administrators configure consent requirements?
- Deployment: Does the remote computer need an agent or service, and who is allowed to install or manage it?
- Transfers: Are file and clipboard transfers supported, and can they be disabled or restricted?
- Operational fit: Which endpoints are supported, and does the workflow depend on a VPN or other network setup?
Check the current product documentation for supported systems, configuration options, and access behavior before deploying it. A feature or control documented for one product should not be assumed to apply to another.
