A programmable metallization cell (PMC) is a type of nonvolatile resistive memory that stores information by forming or dissolving a tiny metal filament inside a solid electrolyte. A connected filament creates a low-resistance state; breaking it creates a high-resistance state. Because the cell retains its resistance state without continuous power, it can represent stored data after power is removed.
What is a programmable metallization cell?
A PMC is an electrochemical form of resistive random-access memory (ReRAM). It uses applied voltage to move metal ions through an ion-conducting solid material, changing the cell’s electrical resistance. The International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors groups programmable metallization cells with electrochemical metallization bridge ReRAM and conductive bridge RAM (CBRAM). The names PMC, electrochemical metallization cell or memory (ECM), and CBRAM are used for closely related technologies, though implementations can differ in materials and geometry.

The ITRS 2.0 Beyond CMOS report describes the family as using “electrochemical control of nano-scale quantities of metal in thin dielectric films or solid electrolytes to perform the resistive switching operation.” Read the ITRS 2.0: Beyond CMOS report.

What is a PMC cell made of?
A typical cell has three essential parts: an electrochemically active electrode, a solid electrolyte that conducts metal ions, and a relatively inert counter-electrode. Silver and copper are common active metals in the ITRS discussion, but other electrode and electrolyte combinations appear in research devices. The exact materials affect how ions move and how the cell switches.

How does PMC memory work?
SET: forming the conductive bridge
During a SET operation, an applied bias oxidizes metal atoms at the active electrode, creating positively charged ions. Those ions move through the electrolyte and are reduced near the counter-electrode, where metal deposits accumulate. As the metal grows into a conductive filament bridging the electrodes, resistance falls and the cell enters its low-resistance, or ON, state.
RESET: breaking or dissolving the bridge
During RESET, the conductive filament is broken or dissolved. The resulting gap raises resistance and returns the cell toward its high-resistance, or OFF, state. The precise ion transport and reset behavior depend on the electrode-and-electrolyte materials and the operating conditions; there is no single universal switching recipe for every PMC.

How resistance represents data
A memory circuit can distinguish the cell’s resistance states to represent information. Since the state persists without continuous power, PMC is classified as nonvolatile memory. Some research designs have shown programmable intermediate resistance levels, which could support multilevel storage or electronic-synapse behavior. Those capabilities are specific to particular designs and should not be assumed for every PMC.
What PMC is used for—and what is established
Research explores PMC for nonvolatile memory and switching, as well as multilevel storage and synapse-like electronic behavior. These are research and development directions; the available evidence does not establish a general-purpose PMC memory product for consumers. Nor does it establish current vendor roadmaps or broadly applicable product specifications.

How to compare PMC implementations
A device’s performance depends on its materials, cell design, programming conditions, and surrounding circuitry. Useful comparison criteria include:
- Materials: active and counter-electrode composition, electrolyte, and device geometry.
- Programming behavior: SET and RESET polarity, programming voltage and current, and switching speed.
- Electrical states: ON/OFF resistance ratio and, where relevant, the stability and distinguishability of intermediate levels.
- Reliability: endurance, retention, and cell-to-cell or cycle-to-cycle variability.
- Array design: architecture and, in passive arrays, how the circuit handles sneak paths—unintended current paths through unselected cells.
Voltage, speed, endurance, retention, and scaling figures reported for one device are not universal PMC specifications. They need to be read alongside that device’s materials, test conditions, and array configuration.
