A prediction market lets participants buy and sell contracts tied to the outcome of a defined event. In a common yes-or-no contract, the price can be read as a rough market-implied probability, and the winning side receives a stated payout when the contract settles. But price is not an objective forecast, and the contract’s exact rules—not just its short headline—determine what counts as a win.
How does a prediction market work?
A venue lists contracts tied to specified outcomes: for example, whether a particular economic measure will meet a threshold by a stated date. Participants trade those contracts as their views, available information, and willingness to buy or sell change. The contract terms specify the qualifying event and how its result will be determined.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) describes event contracts as deriving value from an event outcome and says their prices reflect traders’ perceived probability. A market price therefore summarizes what buyers and sellers are willing to trade at; it does not establish the event’s objectively correct chance of occurring.

For the binary format described by CME Group, contract prices range from $0.01 to $0.99. CME’s examples treat $0.05 as roughly a 5% market view and $0.95 as roughly a 95% view. On that basis, a 60-cent price can be read as an approximate 60% market-implied probability for the outcome represented by that side of the contract.

This is an interpretation of a particular contract format, not a guarantee or universal rule for every platform. Prices change as orders and information change, and a displayed price may differ from your own estimate. The CFTC notes that order books commonly display live bids and asks, which can help explain why there may not be one simple, stable price.
How do prediction market payouts and profits work?
In CME’s illustration—not a current quote—a contract costs $0.45 and pays $1 if the predicted result occurs, or $0 if it does not. For a buyer who holds the contract to settlement, the outcome looks like this:

| Result | Settlement payout | Buyer’s gross result before fees |
|---|---|---|
| Predicted result occurs | $1 | $1 payout minus the $0.45 entry price = $0.55 profit |
| Predicted result does not occur | $0 | The $0.45 entry cost is lost |
Fees reduce a winning buyer’s net profit; they add to the cost of a losing trade. The entry price and the settlement payout are different numbers: the payout is what the contract returns at settlement, while profit or loss also depends on what the trader paid and any applicable costs. These are CME’s described product mechanics, not universal terms for every event contract.

Can you sell a contract before it resolves?
Yes. CME and the CFTC describe customers trading out before an event is complete or a contract is settled. If you close early, your result depends on the price you receive for selling, rather than only on the final event outcome. That price may have moved either way since you entered, and applicable fees or other costs can affect the result.

A 2026 market about who would perform at the Super Bowl halftime show illustrates how wording can become consequential: the Associated Press reported debate over whether Cardi B’s appearance counted as a “performance.” Kalshi settled at last prices before trading was paused and returned money to users. That is a report about one particular market’s handling, not a general settlement rule for prediction markets.
What is the U.S. regulatory context?
The CFTC says event contracts are frequently structured as swaps and describes registration and oversight requirements for covered markets. The rules and customer protections that apply depend on the contract and operator; protections described for a CFTC-regulated market should not be assumed for an unverified venue or every jurisdiction.

On February 25, 2026, the CFTC issued an advisory describing cases involving suspected misuse of nonpublic information and fraud connected to event contracts traded on KalshiEX, a designated contract market. The agency said it has authority to police illegal trading practices on designated contract markets. The advisory discusses suspected conduct and potential violations; it should not be read as saying ordinary trading on informed views is automatically misconduct.
The CFTC’s 2026 advance notice of proposed rulemaking seeks public comment on how existing statutory principles and regulations should apply to event contracts. It is a request for comment, not a final new rule. For any specific market, check the current contract terms, operator information, and applicable jurisdiction.
