A pixel is one sample in the grid that makes up a raster digital image. It stores numerical brightness or color information at a position in that grid. An image-file pixel is data—not necessarily a tiny physical square on a screen.
What is the smallest unit of an image?
For a raster digital image, the smallest discrete unit is the pixel, short for “picture element.” ISO/DIS 18383 defines it as the “smallest geometric unit of information in a digital representation of an image, corresponding to a single spatial sample.” ISO/DIS 18383

A raster image is a two-dimensional array of these samples. Each pixel has a position and a value: a grayscale pixel may represent brightness, while a color pixel may hold values for multiple color channels. The Library of Congress glossary describes digitized images as two-dimensional arrays of pixels.

How do pixels make an image?
Pixels arranged in rows and columns form an image grid. Viewed together, their values create the picture: nearby samples can differ in brightness or color, and those changes make edges, textures, and shapes visible. Zooming far enough into a raster image reveals the grid-like structure, but the samples themselves are numerical data rather than miniature physical tiles.

For example, a 1200 × 800 image contains 960,000 pixel positions. That count describes the grid dimensions; it does not by itself say how large the image will appear on a monitor or print, how densely it was sampled from a scene, or how many shades each pixel can encode.
Is a pixel a dot?
Sometimes the word refers to a physical element, but the meanings depend on context. In an image file, a pixel is a spatial sample in digital data. In a camera or scanner, “pixel” can refer to a photosensitive sensor cell; on a display, it can refer to an output element. These are related uses, not interchangeable descriptions. So an image pixel does not always have a fixed physical size. Its physical dimensions depend on how the image is captured, displayed, or printed. ISO also notes that pixel counts can change through resampling. ISO/DIS 18383

| Term | What it describes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel dimensions | The number of sample positions across and down an image | 1200 × 800 pixels |
| Spatial resolution | How many pixel spaces are used to sample a unit of length | Sampling density, not the image’s total pixel count |
| Bit depth | How many bits encode a pixel’s value or each channel’s value | 8 bits per channel across three RGB channels equals 24 bits per pixel |
The Library of Congress distinguishes spatial resolution from tonal resolution, which concerns the number of bits used to represent shades or values. Library of Congress: A Basic Digital Imaging Glossary When stating bit depth, it matters whether the figure means bits per pixel or bits per channel.
What does 24-bit RGB mean?
In Microsoft’s example, each of the red, green, and blue channels has 8 bits. That makes 24 bits per pixel and allows 16,777,216 possible channel-value combinations (256 values per channel, multiplied across three channels). This is a count of encoded combinations, not a claim that every combination looks perceptually distinct. Microsoft Learn: Native pixel formats overview

What happens when an image is enlarged?
When software enlarges a raster image, it has to fill a larger grid. Interpolation estimates values for new sample positions from the existing pixels. The image may therefore have more pixels after enlargement without gaining detail that the original capture did not contain. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Research Integrity notes that enlargement does not increase spatial resolution and can introduce artifacts. What should you look at when judging an image?
- Dimensions: Check width and height to learn the total number of samples.
- Sampling density: Check spatial resolution when the physical size of a print or sampled area matters.
- Value precision: Check bit depth, and confirm whether it is given per pixel or per channel.
- Resampling history: A larger pixel grid may contain interpolated values rather than additional captured detail.
“Resolution” alone can be ambiguous: it may refer to pixel dimensions, sampling density, or tonal precision. Naming the specific measure makes comparisons meaningful. Library of Congress: A Basic Digital Imaging Glossary Microsoft Learn: Native pixel formats overview
