What Is a Passphrase and How Should You Use One?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A passphrase is a password, commonly made from a sequence of words, that can be easier to remember than a string of random characters. To use one safely, make it long and hard to guess, use a different credential for every account, store unique credentials in a trusted password manager, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. A passphrase alone does not stop phishing.

What is a passphrase?

In everyday use, a passphrase is a password formed from several words. The words make a long secret more memorable, but they do not make it safe automatically: a familiar quote, predictable phrase, or personal detail may be easier to guess than it seems.

The terms overlap in technical guidance. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes a password as “sometimes referred to as a passphrase or, if numeric, a personal identification number [PIN].” So a passphrase is not a separate kind of account protection; it is one way to create a password.

How many words should a passphrase have?

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) describes five to seven unrelated words as one memorable passphrase pattern. Treat that as a practical example, not a guarantee: word count alone cannot make a phrase safe if it is predictable, reused, or based on information about you. Avoid names, pets, birthdays, and other personal details, and follow the service’s actual length and character limits.

Current NIST guidance also helps explain why length matters more than an arbitrary symbol recipe. In SP 800-63B Revision 4, dated August 26, 2025, NIST tells covered verifiers not to impose composition rules such as requiring a mix of uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols. For centrally verified single-factor passwords, the guideline sets a 15-character minimum, recommends allowing at least 64 characters, and says verifiers should accept printing ASCII characters and spaces and should accept Unicode. Those are requirements and recommendations for services within the guideline’s scope—not a promise that every consumer website follows them. Read NIST SP 800-63B Revision 4.

How to use a passphrase safely

  1. Choose a hard-to-guess secret. Use a long construction, such as CISA’s example of five to seven unrelated words. Avoid personal details and predictable phrases. Check the service’s password rules before choosing it.
  2. Use a different credential for every account. If one service exposes a password, reuse can put your other accounts at risk. Do not recycle a passphrase with minor changes.
  3. Store unique credentials in a password manager. A manager can generate and store a different password for each account, so you do not have to memorize them all. CISA recommends considering whether it works across your devices, how it stores its database, how account recovery works, whether it offers MFA, and whether you trust the product and its developer. CISA’s guidance on strong passwords.
  4. Enable MFA where available. MFA adds another authentication factor; a passphrase by itself does not provide phishing resistance. NIST states, “Passwords are not phishing-resistant.” Physical authenticators are one possible MFA factor, but check that the service supports your chosen method and plan how you would recover access if you lose it. NIST SP 800-63B Revision 4 and NIST’s authenticator requirements.
  5. Protect recovery information for encrypted data. If a passphrase protects an encrypted device or files, keep its recovery key or other recovery information safe as well. Losing the passphrase or key can mean permanent data loss. CISA’s password guidance.

Is a passphrase safer than a password?

Not inherently. A long, unique passphrase can be a practical password, but its safety depends on how difficult it is to guess and whether it is kept private and used only once. A short or predictable phrase is not made strong by calling it a passphrase; a random password stored in a manager may be a better fit if you do not need to memorize it.

Neither format makes sign-in phishing-resistant. MFA is a separate layer, and the protection it provides depends on the method and what the service supports. NIST’s digital identity guidance requires a phishing-resistant option at Authentication Assurance Level 2 (AAL2) and phishing resistance at AAL3; these are framework requirements for those assurance levels, not a ranking of consumer products. NIST SP 800-63B Revision 4.

Do you need to change a passphrase regularly?

Do not change a passphrase on a fixed schedule just because time has passed. NIST’s Revision 4 guidance says covered verifiers should not require periodic password changes unless there is evidence of compromise. If a service reports a breach or you learn that a credential has been exposed, change it promptly—and change it anywhere else it was reused. Unique credentials make that response simpler.
